Pakistani climbers reopen historic Hindu Kush pass after 27 years

CHITRAL: A team of Pakistani mountaineers has successfully crossed the historic Phargam An Pass in the Hindu Kush mountain range for the first time in 27 years, marking a major achievement for the country’s mountaineering community.

The expedition successfully reached the 5,100-metre-high Phargam An Pass, completing a challenging journey through one of the most remote and difficult mountain routes in northern Pakistan.

The expedition also made history as female climbers reached the summit for the first time, highlighting the growing participation of women in Pakistan’s adventure and mountaineering sector.

The mission was organised in Upper Chitral with the support of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority. During the expedition, the team also discovered the memorial of Austrian mountaineer George Kronberger, who lost his life in the area in 1975.

Despite facing dangerous glaciers, steep snow-covered slopes, rocky terrain and the constant threat of avalanches, the team completed the expedition safely.

Expedition guide Zamrud Khan said the route to Phargam An Pass has changed significantly over the years due to the effects of climate change, making the journey more challenging than in the past.

Three sisters from Chitral—Mehrosh Akhtar, Ismail Roz and Madhu Shala Akhtar—took part in the historic expedition, setting a new milestone for women in Pakistani mountaineering.

Other members of the expedition included Kamran Khan, Samar Khan, Nauman Khan, Noorul Rahman, Zohaib Khan, Umar Khattab Sherani, Sohniya Babar, Amina Shabbir and Madiha Syed.

The successful expedition is being seen as an important milestone for adventure tourism and mountaineering in Pakistan, while showcasing the country’s growing potential as a destination for high-altitude exploration.

Gold prices rise further in Pakistan as global rates gain

ISLAMABAD: Gold prices continued their upward trend in Pakistan on Monday, with the price of one tola increasing by Rs800 in the local market. According to data released by the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association, the price of 24-karat gold rose to Rs457,336 per tola, following the latest increase. The price of 10 grams of gold also moved higher, climbing by Rs685 to Rs392,091. The fresh increase in domestic gold prices came as international bullion rates also recorded gains. In the global market, gold was trading at around $4,349 per ounce, up by $8 from the previous level. Market participants continue to closely monitor movements in international bullion prices, exchange rates and investor demand, all of which influence gold prices in Pakistan. Gold remains a popular investment and a traditional store of value in the country, particularly during periods of economic uncertainty and currency fluctuations. Changes in international prices are generally reflected in the local bullion market after adjustments for the rupee-dollar exchange rate and other market factors.

    Petrol down Rs3.39, diesel Rs4.07

The federal government has announced another reduction in petroleum prices, lowering the rates of both petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) effective August 5 under the recently introduced daily fuel pricing mechanism. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs3.39 per litre, bringing the new rate to Rs328.56 per litre. The price of high-speed diesel has also been cut by Rs4.07 per litre, with the revised rate set at Rs385.86 per litre. The latest reduction follows a similar decrease announced a day earlier, reflecting continued adjustments under the government’s daily fuel price review system. The new pricing mechanism, introduced on July 17, determines fuel prices using a seven-day average of international oil market rates. The policy aims to align domestic petroleum prices more closely with global market trends and allow quicker adjustments in response to fluctuations in crude oil prices. Pakistan remains heavily dependent on imported crude oil and refined petroleum products, making local fuel prices highly sensitive to movements in international energy markets. Changes in global oil prices directly affect the country’s import bill, foreign exchange reserves and inflation. Energy analysts say international petroleum prices continue to be influenced by geopolitical developments, including tensions in the Middle East, decisions by OPEC+ countries, sanctions on major oil producers and disruptions in key global shipping routes. These factors can significantly impact crude oil prices and transportation costs, ultimately affecting domestic fuel prices in Pakistan.

Spain deploys military to Ceuta as thousands of migrants enter enclave from Morocco

Spain has deployed armed forces to reinforce civil guard units in its North African enclave of Ceuta after thousands of migrants swam around border jetties from Morocco, resulting in chaos and at least 15 drownings. The influx follows a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling prohibiting the summary return of migrants intercepted at sea, a move Spain’s interior ministry claims human trafficking networks have exploited to drive illegal crossings. The sudden security breakdown has triggered a diplomatic dispute within Europe, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announcing that Italy is considering suspending the open-border Schengen agreement with Spain in response to the crisis. Spanish Foreign Minister José Luis Albares condemned the statement, accusing Italy of political demagoguery instead of displaying European solidarity. As local reception centres in Ceuta remain severely overwhelmed, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez pledged immediate government intervention to restore order along the European Union’s land border with Africa.

What’s really going on between Michael B. Jordan…

Michael B. Jordan and Rihanna have sparked plenty of online curiosity after a recent outing together led fans to wonder whether the two stars could be more than friends. The viral sighting quickly fueled speculation, particularly because both celebrities are major names in entertainment. However, reports suggest there is no romance behind their meeting. According to the information attributed to Page Six, the outing was connected to work, and Jordan and Rihanna are simply friends. A viral moment creates dating rumors Celebrity sightings can quickly become the subject of online speculation, especially when two well-known stars are seen together away from a major public event. That appears to be what happened with Jordan and Rihanna. The pair’s recent appearance was enough for fans to begin wondering about their relationship. Social media reactions quickly turned a casual meeting into a possible romance story, even though neither star has publicly confirmed a relationship. Jordan has generally kept his personal life private. He previously described his love life as a subject he is not particularly interested in discussing publicly, while explaining that his demanding career can make relationships complicated. (Harper’s BAZAAR) Their connection is reportedly professional Despite the speculation, the latest reports indicate that the outing had a professional reason behind it. Sources reportedly told Page Six that Jordan and Rihanna are friends and that their recent time together was work-related. That explanation offers a much simpler answer to the viral photos and suggests fans may have read more into the encounter than was actually there. Neither Jordan nor Rihanna has publicly announced a romantic relationship with each other, making the friendship explanation the only confirmed direction available at this point. Jordan keeps his dating life private Jordan has remained relatively quiet about his relationships throughout his career. His most public romance was with Lori Harvey, whom he dated for more than a year before their 2022 split. Since then, the actor has been linked to several women, although many of those reports were never confirmed. (People.com) His private approach makes it understandable why even a simple public outing can attract considerable attention. Rihanna, meanwhile, has also remained focused on her family, music, business ventures and other professional projects. A sighting with another celebrity does not necessarily indicate a romantic connection. For now, the viral moment appears to be exactly that: a moment that generated plenty of speculation but little evidence of a romance.
