US can’t isolate Iran without China, NYT says

WASHINGTON: The United States may find it difficult to economically isolate Iran completely unless China cooperates with Washington, according to a New York Times analysis, which highlights Beijing’s growing role in Iran’s oil exports and trade.

China is Iran’s largest trading partner and a major buyer of its crude oil, giving Beijing considerable influence over the effectiveness of any US campaign aimed at cutting Tehran’s access to international revenue.

According to figures cited in the analysis, China and Iran conducted around $41.2 billion in trade in 2025, while Chinese buyers imported approximately $31.2bn worth of Iranian crude during the same year. At times, Chinese customers have accounted for as much as 90 per cent of Iran’s total oil exports.

That dependence creates a significant challenge for Washington. The United States can impose sanctions on Iranian banks, companies, oil traders and vessels, but cutting off those channels may not be enough if Chinese businesses continue buying Iranian crude.

A particularly important role is played by China’s small independent refineries, commonly known as “teapots”. These private operators have relatively limited exposure to the global financial system, potentially making them less vulnerable to traditional US sanctions.

The arrangement has allowed Iran to maintain an important source of revenue despite years of American restrictions. Continued Chinese purchases could therefore provide Tehran with the financial breathing room needed to withstand additional economic pressure.

But Beijing has its own economic leverage over Washington.

The New York Times analysis noted that China could potentially restrict exports of critical minerals needed by American technology and defence industries. Beijing has previously used restrictions on strategic minerals during periods of trade tension with the United States, demonstrating the potential economic cost of confrontation.

That creates a difficult calculation for Washington. Increasing pressure on Iran could put the United States in a position where it also has to confront China, potentially widening an already complicated economic rivalry.

The geopolitical equation is further complicated by developments in the Middle East. The analysis pointed to US military activity in the region and the movement of some American military assets from the Pacific. Chinese observers have interpreted such moves as potentially creating vulnerabilities in America’s strategic position in Asia.

For Washington, the central question is therefore not simply how many sanctions can be imposed on Tehran. It is whether those measures can succeed while Iran retains access to one of its most important economic partners.

If China continues purchasing Iranian oil and maintaining commercial ties with Tehran, Iran is unlikely to become completely isolated economically.

The analysis suggests that Beijing’s decisions could ultimately determine how far the US pressure campaign can go — and whether Washington can tighten the economic screws on Tehran without opening another front in its increasingly complex relationship with China.

On Friday, August 7, Deadline confirmed that his latest film, The Odyssey, is crushing the worldwide box office, enjoying massive commercial success that adds yet another triumph to his legendary filmography. In a resurfaced interview, Nolan admitted the project was deeply nerve-racking despite years of careful work. He humbly noted that while filmmakers pour their hearts into their creations, movies ultimately belong to the audience, and their value lies in the eye of the beholder. This perspective reveals his rare respect for viewers, acknowledging that a film’s meaning is completed only when it reaches them. The deceased, identified as Viney Gupta had been married to a woman named Rekha for around three and a half years. Rekha is a housewife, and the couple had twin children—a son and a daughter. Viney worked as a software engineer in Noida and reportedly earned more than Rs6 million annually. According to Viney’s mother, the incident began with an argument between the couple over giving medicine to one of their children. The disagreement reportedly escalated after Viney raised his voice, causing Rekha to become angry. Viney’s family alleged that Rekha arrived with her two brothers, sister-in-law, father, uncle and another man. They claimed that the group entered the house and began assaulting Viney. According to the allegations, the attackers repeatedly assaulted Viney, strangled him and struck him on the chest with their hands and feet. His family members said they attempted to intervene and save him, but the alleged assault continued. India denies role in Sheikh Hasina’s planned vir…

NEW DELHI: India has firmly denied any government involvement in a virtual address that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to deliver to mark two years since the political uprising that forced her from office. The clarification came after reports suggested that the online event, scheduled to be held in New Delhi, had official backing. India’s Ministry of External Affairs rejected those claims, insisting the government has no connection with the programme. Speaking at a weekly press briefing on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the event was being organised by a private media organisation and not by the Indian government. “The Government of India has no role in organising this event,” Jaiswal said. He added that New Delhi neither endorses nor supports the views that may be expressed during the programme. The statement comes amid heightened political sensitivity surrounding Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in self-imposed exile in India since her government was toppled following student-led protests in 2024. According to media reports, the 78-year-old former premier is expected to make her first public appearance since leaving Bangladesh, addressing supporters and viewers via video link from New Delhi. The event is being hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, is also expected to participate alongside other speakers. Meanwhile, authorities in Dhaka have reportedly instructed local media outlets not to broadcast or provide live coverage of Hasina’s virtual speech. The move reflects the continuing political tensions surrounding the former prime minister and her Awami League. Sheikh Hasina remains one of the most influential and controversial figures in Bangladesh’s recent political history. After losing power, she was convicted in 2025 on charges of crimes against humanity linked to a crackdown on anti-government protesters. A court sentenced her to death, a verdict she has rejected as politically motivated and legally invalid. Her planned address is expected to draw significant attention across South Asia, with supporters viewing it as a symbolic return to the political spotlight, while critics see it as another chapter in Bangladesh’s ongoing political divide. India’s latest statement appears aimed at distancing itself from any perception of official involvement, as New Delhi seeks to avoid diplomatic friction with Dhaka while continuing to host the former Bangladeshi leader. With regional attention focused on the event, Sheikh Hasina’s speech is likely to reignite debate over Bangladesh’s political future and her possible role in it.

Iran’s parliament backs bill criminalizing c…

Iran’s parliament approved the general framework of a bill Sunday that would make it a crime to give interviews or engage in other communication with media outlets considered hostile to the Islamic Republic, including American or Israeli outlets and any media funded by either country, according to Iran’s Shargh newspaper. Osman Salari, a member of parliament’s judicial and legal commission, said individual provisions within the bill, which aims to counter what officials describe as foreign intelligence influence, still require separate debate and approval. He told the Mizan news agency that details reported so far about the bill should not be treated as final. Under the proposed legislation, interviews or participation in discussions with media deemed hostile would be banned outright, with violations carrying prison terms ranging from six months to two years. Interviews with other foreign media outlets would require advance notification to the intelligence ministry, while any contact with foreign embassies, offices of foreign organizations or other non Iranian institutions, conducted without notification and written permission from the foreign ministry, would draw fines and the loss of certain social rights. The bill would also increase penalties for economic crimes carried out under the direction or supervision of foreign actors, prohibit sharing information with foreigners without intelligence ministry approval, and limit scientific cooperation with foreign institutions to those on an approved list. It would further criminalize policy or legislative proposals made under the direction of foreign intelligence services if such proposals are found to harm Iran’s security or independence, with penalties reaching up to 30 years in prison. Cases brought under this provision would fall under the jurisdiction of Iran’s Revolutionary Courts. Parliament will now review the bill article by article. Once lawmakers approve a final text, the legislation must still pass review by the Guardian Council before it can take effect as law. This is not the first time Iran has moved to criminalize cooperation with foreign entities. A law passed in 2025, following a 12 day war with Israel, introduced harsher penalties for alleged cooperation with hostile states. Earlier this month, Iranian photojournalist Yalda Moaiery was sentenced to 15 years in prison under that law over accusations that included giving interviews to media considered hostile and supplying photographs to organizations linked to the United States and Israel.
