Trump hits back at Canada as tariff war escalates

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has lashed out at Canada after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs on American goods, deepening a trade dispute that threatens to further strain economic ties between the two neighbouring countries.

Trump responded sharply on Sunday after Canada confirmed that new tariffs targeting US products would take effect on September 8.

“Canada wants the benefits of being a state, without being one!!!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, while also accusing Canada of imposing heavy tariffs on American farmers for years.

The latest escalation follows the introduction of new US tariffs covering around $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. The measures, which took effect on Saturday, impose tariffs of up to 50 per cent and affect products ranging from hockey sticks and cement to other Canadian exports.

Carney announced Canada’s response a day earlier, saying Ottawa would impose new tariffs particularly targeting American steel and dairy products.

The Canadian prime minister described the situation in unusually forceful terms, saying the country had effectively been “attacked” and was responding accordingly.

The confrontation follows the collapse of recent trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa. Earlier discussions had appeared more constructive, with Trump saying he believed the United States could reach an agreement with Canada and pointing to his positive relationship with Carney.

But Carney said the latest US demands had crossed a line.

According to the Canadian leader, Washington proposed terms that were “uneconomic” and “unfair” while undermining the benefits Canada expected from a potential agreement. Ottawa ultimately rejected the proposal.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer offered a different account of the negotiations. He told The New York Times that Washington had offered to reduce tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium and automobiles while also removing a recently imposed tariff on Canadian lumber.

Greer said the proposed measures would have provided Canada with exceptionally favourable treatment compared with other US trading partners.

However, the offer failed to produce a breakthrough.

Greer also told Fox News that Washington was preparing measures in response to Canada’s retaliation, signalling that the dispute could escalate further rather than return immediately to the negotiating table.

A senior US official described the latest talks as candid but not acrimonious, suggesting that despite the increasingly hostile public statements, both sides had maintained communication during negotiations.

The economic stakes are significant. The United States and Canada share one of the world’s largest trading relationships, with businesses and consumers on both sides relying heavily on cross-border commerce.

The latest tariffs could therefore raise costs for companies, disrupt supply chains and put additional pressure on industries already facing uncertainty.

With Canadian counter-tariffs scheduled to take effect in September, attention will now turn to whether Washington and Ottawa can find a compromise before the measures trigger a wider trade confrontation.

The State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) foreign exchange reserves fell by $229 million in the week ending July 24, 2026, to $17.03 billion, mainly due to external debt repayments. Pakistan’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves stood at $22.4 billion during the week. The SBP held $17.03 billion, while commercial banks maintained net reserves of around $5.4 billion. Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee edged up against the US dollar, closing at Rs277.81 in the interbank market on Thursday compared with Rs277.82 a day earlier. The dollar remained stable in early Asian trading after the US Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged. Gold prices in Pakistan also increased, following gains in international markets. The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association said the price of 24-carat gold rose by Rs1,000 to Rs427,436 per tola. The price of 10 grams increased by Rs857 to Rs366,457. Internationally, spot gold gained 0.8% to $4,098.98 per ounce, while US gold futures for August delivery rose 1.4% to $4,097.70. The Federal Reserve maintained its current interest rates on Wednesday, while softer US inflation data reduced market expectations of a rate hike in September. Analysts, however, warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could put renewed pressure on inflation. Silver prices moved lower in the domestic market, declining by Rs76 to Rs6,215 per tola. Interactive Commodities Director Adnan Agar said the gold market remained range-bound. Bullion traded between $4,028 and $4,120 before settling near $4,107, which he described as a “danger zone.”

    Punjab launches early anti-smog crackdown

Punjab has launched a province-wide campaign to curb major sources of air pollution ahead of the winter smog season, targeting brick kilns, industrial units, plastic manufacturers, construction sites and smoke-emitting vehicles. The Punjab Environment Protection Agency (EPA) is focusing on early action to control emissions before pollution levels rise during the colder months. Regional teams will step up inspections, enforce environmental laws and ensure the use of pollution-control equipment across the province. The EPA reviewed its anti-smog preparations at a meeting chaired by Director General Syed Musa Raza. Directors from EPA offices and regional field officers assessed district-level readiness, enforcement targets and monitoring systems. The DG directed field teams to accelerate inspections and take strict action against environmental violations. The agency has also increased monitoring of construction sites, where dust contributes significantly to particulate pollution. Officials inspected fog cannon operations and instructed major construction sites to keep anti-smog equipment running. They also directed teams to activate fog cannons and mist sprinklers in areas where particulate pollution rises and the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeds permissible limits. Industrial units must keep their emission-control and filtration systems fully operational throughout the pre-smog period. The EPA warned that factories that bypass pollution-control systems could face sealing, prosecution and financial penalties. Special enforcement teams will also check heavy transport vehicles at major city entry and exit points. Officials will conduct emissions tests and take legal action against vehicles that exceed prescribed limits. EPA enforcement figures from January 1 to July 25, 2026, show the scale of the campaign. Teams inspected 45,736 brick kilns across Punjab, demolished 777 illegal structures, sealed 419 units, registered 762 FIRs and imposed fines worth Rs67.76 million. The agency also inspected 27,384 industrial units during the period. Authorities sealed 694 facilities, demolished 272 structures, registered 175 FIRs and imposed fines totaling Rs123 million over environmental violations.
