HANGU: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has announced that he will personally lead Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers during the party’s planned long march to Islamabad on September 27, insisting that the date is final and the movement will continue until its demands are met.

Speaking during a visit to Hangu on Saturday, Afridi addressed PTI gatherings at Hangu Bazaar Chowk and Abu Bakr Siddique Chowk as part of preparations for the party’s street movement. PTI provincial president Junaid Akbar Khan, provincial ministers and other party leaders and workers were also present.

Afridi called on party supporters to begin full preparations for the march, saying there would be no retreat. He told workers that he would lead them to Islamabad and expressed confidence that the movement would return with success.

The chief minister also criticised what he described as the failure to implement a Supreme Court directive concerning PTI founder Imran Khan’s medical treatment. Afridi claimed that a three-member bench had ordered arrangements for Khan’s treatment at Shifa International Hospital, but the directive had not been carried out despite time being granted for implementation.

He accused the authorities of applying court orders selectively, alleging that decisions involving PTI and its supporters were enforced quickly while the order concerning Khan’s treatment remained unimplemented.

Afridi urged the judiciary to ensure that laws and court decisions were applied equally, arguing that the country could not operate under separate standards for different groups.

Turning to the economy, the chief minister claimed that Pakistan’s public debt had climbed to Rs97 trillion while inflation and financial pressures continued to affect ordinary citizens. He also alleged that industrial investment was shifting abroad and that farmers were facing increasing difficulties.

Afridi portrayed Imran Khan as a unifying national figure and argued that his return would help rebuild public trust in state institutions and contribute to political stability. He also criticised government policies that he said were contributing to loss of life while benefiting a limited section of society.

Appealing particularly to young Pakistanis, Afridi urged them to take an active role in the September 27 movement. He said the youth make up a major share of PTI’s supporters and argued that they should play a decisive role in determining the country’s political future.

The response came after India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism and suggested that the issue had affected bilateral cooperation under the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan dismissed these allegations during the UNSC’s High-Level Open Debate on “Natural Resource Governance: The Foundation of Peace, Security and Prosperity.” Speaking in a right of reply, Pakistan’s First Secretary to the UN, Ansar Shah, said India’s statement was misleading and represented a futile effort to distort the facts surrounding the treaty and regional security issues. He maintained that the Indus Waters Treaty remains legally valid and binding, rejecting India’s claim that the agreement could be placed in abeyance through unilateral action. Shah stated that the treaty contains no provision allowing either party to suspend or set it aside on its own. He referred to the Court of Arbitration’s August 2025 award, which, according to Pakistan, reaffirmed that the treaty continues to remain fully in force along with its dispute resolution mechanisms. He argued that India’s unilateral approach violated the terms of the agreement as well as established principles of international law. Pakistan also accused India of using shared water resources as a political tool. Shah said any attempt to weaponise water for political pressure or to restrict water access would amount to a serious breach of international legal obligations and norms. He added that such actions could undermine regional stability and pose risks to international peace and security, making the issue relevant to discussions at the Security Council. Responding to India’s allegations regarding terrorism, Shah rejected the accusations and instead claimed that India was attempting to conceal its own involvement in activities that Pakistan says have contributed to terrorism within its borders. He alleged that militant groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and the Majeed Brigade had been responsible for attacks that claimed the lives of thousands of Pakistani civilians and security personnel, including women and children. Pakistan reiterated its long-standing allegation that India supports and finances these groups, a claim India has consistently denied. Shah also referred to reports of alleged extraterritorial operations involving India, saying such incidents had raised international concerns. He further argued that India could not portray itself solely as a victim of terrorism while ignoring accusations directed against it. Addressing the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Shah said the people of the region continue to be denied their right to self-determination. He maintained that the territory remains internationally recognised as disputed and asserted that no unilateral measures could alter its legal or historical status. He also urged India to fulfil its obligations under the UN Charter and implement relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Earlier in the debate, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, reaffirmed that the Indus Waters Treaty remains effective and legally binding. He called on the UN Security Council to remain vigilant against the misuse or weaponisation of natural resources and encouraged greater use of preventive diplomacy, peaceful dispute resolution, monitoring mechanisms, and other international measures to prevent disputes over shared resources from escalating into broader conflicts.

    LAHORE: The federal government has intensified efforts to modernise Pakistan’s tax system by accelerating reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), expanding the cashless economy and integrating advanced digital technologies to improve transparency and tax compliance. Speaking at the certificate distribution ceremony for the FBR’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the government is committed to creating a taxpayer-friendly and transparent financial system that supports long-term economic growth. He said reforms are being implemented simultaneously in tax policy and tax administration, with a new operational model being introduced in the FBR to improve efficiency, accountability and public trust. The minister added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is personally overseeing initiatives aimed at documenting the economy, broadening the tax base and promoting digital financial transactions. Aurangzeb revealed that authorities have uncovered major sales tax evasion cases, resulting in higher tax collections and increased revenue for the national exchequer. He stressed that modern digital tools, integrated databases and artificial intelligence will play a central role in strengthening tax administration and bringing the FBR in line with international standards. Calling on tax officials to continuously upgrade their skills, the finance minister said restoring taxpayers’ confidence and protecting national resources remain among the institution’s highest priorities. He expressed confidence that ongoing reforms would improve the business environment and ensure the benefits of economic reforms reach ordinary citizens. FBR Chairman Muhammad Rashid Langrial also addressed the ceremony, highlighting the importance of professional training and capacity building for tax officers. He said the organisation is focused on developing a modern, transparent and efficient tax system capable of meeting Pakistan’s evolving economic needs.

Speaking at the weekly media briefing on Thursday, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan expects the implementation of the Islamabad Reconciliation Framework to advance through consensus on the Strait of Hormuz, paving the way for technical-level talks between Tehran and Washington. He said Pakistan supports the resumption of negotiations between Iran and the United States and will continue to play a constructive diplomatic role alongside regional partners. According to the spokesperson, Pakistan, Qatar, Oman, and other friendly countries remain engaged in coordinated efforts to promote peace and stability, with Oman playing a particularly positive role in efforts related to the Strait of Hormuz. Andrabi also confirmed that Iran’s foreign minister has been invited to visit Pakistan, while noting that the National Assembly Secretariat would clarify whether an invitation has also been extended to the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament. On the situation in Gaza, the spokesperson said lasting peace requires not only the disarmament of Hamas but also Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied territories. He stressed that Israel must fulfill its international obligations and end its military presence in Gaza. Responding to questions about the possible deployment of an international peacekeeping force in Gaza, Andrabi said it was too early to discuss such a proposal. He added that Pakistan would examine any formal plan if it is presented through appropriate international channels. Commenting on political developments in Bangladesh, the spokesperson reiterated that Pakistan does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries and declined to comment on statements made by Bangladesh’s former prime minister. He also strongly condemned recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, describing them as violations of international law and threats to maritime security. Andrabi reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the safety of global trade routes and said defense cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia would continue.

    The federal government has announced that current petroleum product prices will remain unchanged until July 27. According to sources from the Petroleum Division, petrol will continue to be sold at Rs335.18 per litre, while high-speed diesel will remain at Rs383.46 per litre. The price of kerosene oil has also been maintained at Rs301.14 per litre. This decision comes after the government introduced a daily fuel price revision mechanism on July 18 to reflect fluctuations in the international market. Since then, prices have seen multiple adjustments. On July 18, petrol became more expensive by Rs5.44 per litre and diesel by Rs31.05 per litre. Due to the closure of international markets, prices were revised on July 21, with petrol decreasing by Rs0.35 per litre while diesel increased by Rs5.71 per litre. Subsequent revisions saw petrol and diesel prices rise by Rs4.93 and Rs7.15 per litre on July 22, followed by further increases of Rs6.39 and Rs7.83 per litre on July 23. On July 24, petrol was hiked by Rs4.40 and diesel by Rs3.62 per litre. The latest decision to freeze prices until July 27 provides temporary relief to consumers after a series of increases driven by volatility in global oil markets. The daily price revision mechanism, introduced amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, aims to ensure timely adjustments to international market trends. However, the frequent changes have drawn criticism from dealers and consumers alike. The government has assured that it is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to make adjustments as needed to balance the impact on the economy and the public. The current freeze offers a brief respite before the next scheduled revision, with consumers hoping for stability in the coming days.

The leak sparked concerns that piracy could hurt the movie’s opening-day performance, with fans urged across social media to avoid spoilers and support the official theatrical release.  Despite those fears, the latest Spider-Man adventure bounced back in spectacular fashion. According to early box office figures, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an astonishing $72 million in preview screenings, setting a new Marvel record. The figure surpassed the previous preview record of $60 million, which had been held by Avengers: Endgame since 2019. The milestone highlights the enormous excitement surrounding Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker and demonstrates that audience demand remained strong despite the piracy concerns.  Industry analysts now expect the film to deliver one of the biggest opening weekends in box office history, with projections ranging between $260 million and $280 million worldwide. If those estimates hold, Brand New Day will cement itself as one of Marvel Studios’ most successful launches ever.  The overwhelming interest is hardly surprising. Living in isolation, Peter faces emotional challenges while confronting dangerous new enemies in a fresh chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Marvel has also benefited from an extensive promotional campaign leading up to the release. Earlier this year, the movie’s trailer generated unprecedented online attention, becoming the biggest trailer launch in history with more than 719 million views in its first 24 hours. That record later placed it ahead of the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer, underlining just how much anticipation surrounded the Spider-Man sequel long before tickets went on sale.  The recent piracy incident nevertheless serves as another reminder of the growing challenge facing major Hollywood releases. High-profile films increasingly become targets for online leaks, forcing studios to step up security while encouraging audiences to experience blockbusters in theaters instead of through illegal copies.  For Marvel, however, the early results suggest the leak had little impact on audience enthusiasm. Instead of slowing momentum, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung past expectations, broken a long-standing Marvel preview record, and positioned itself as one of the defining box office successes of 2026.
