CM Maryam Nawaz directs crackdown on corrupt SHOs

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered the provincial police authorities to take strict action against officers with records of corruption and misconduct, directing that such officials should not be appointed as Station House Officers (SHOs).

 

According to sources familiar with the development and officials in the Chief Minister’s Office, Maryam Nawaz has instructed Inspector General of Police Punjab to thoroughly screen officers holding important field positions and remove those found to have questionable records. The IG Punjab has been given one week to complete the process and submit a progress report to the Chief Minister’s Office.

The Chief Minister stressed that officers known for corruption should not be given charge of police stations anywhere in Punjab. She directed the police leadership to ensure that appointments to the SHO position are based on integrity, professional conduct and performance rather than influence or other considerations.

 

Under the new instructions, police officers facing credible allegations or having a record of corruption will not be considered for appointment as SHOs. The police hierarchy has also been directed to identify and remove what the government described as “bad elements” from key positions.

Maryam Nawaz further ordered the police department to adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward crimes against women and children. She called for immediate action against suspects involved in such offences and emphasized that cases involving vulnerable groups should be handled promptly and professionally.

The Chief Minister’s latest instructions are being viewed as another step toward her administration’s efforts to improve policing and strengthen public confidence in law-enforcement institutions. She has previously emphasized the need for a people-friendly police force that provides services to citizens without discrimination, corruption or unnecessary interference.

The Punjab government has also introduced and promoted measures aimed at improving police accountability and public service delivery, including digital mechanisms for handling complaints, performance-oriented postings and action against officers involved in unlawful activities.

The latest directive places particular emphasis on the role of SHOs, who serve as the primary point of contact between citizens and the police at the local level. Their conduct and performance can have a direct impact on how people perceive the overall law-and-order system.

A senior official in the Home Department said the government’s objective was to restore public confidence by addressing problems within the police structure, particularly at the station level.

The instructions have reportedly been conveyed to the IG Punjab and Regional Police Officers (RPOs) for immediate implementation. Police authorities are expected to review the records of officers posted to important positions and take action against those who fail to meet the required standards.

Officials are also expected to submit reports detailing the progress made during the seven-day period. The government is closely monitoring the process to ensure that the directives are implemented rather than remaining limited to administrative instructions.

The move comes as the Punjab government continues efforts to improve law and order, strengthen police accountability and enhance the delivery of public services across the province. The crackdown on corrupt officers is expected to further intensify scrutiny of police appointments and postings in the coming days.

    LAHORE: The family of the late Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, a distinguished physicist and an unsung hero of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, has donated Rs14 million to establish 14 golden scholarships at Government College University (GCU) Lahore. According to details, the endowment will fund 14 scholarships, worth Rs1 million each, for BS and MPhil students at the university’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) and Department of Economics. The scholarships were sponsored by Mr. Rizwan-ul-Haque Rana and his family to honour his brother, Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, who devoted his 60-year career to teaching and research at GCU-CASP. Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, who passed away on Nov 23, 2023, completed his MSc in Physics from GC Lahore in 1962. He was a direct student of Prof. Dr. Rafi Muhammad Chaudhary, the founder of CASP and widely regarded as the father of nuclear physics in Pakistan. Prof. Faizan played a pivotal role in training 45 Old Ravians who were part of the 150-member expert team that launched Pakistan’s atomic programme on May 28, 1998. He also prepared the PC-1 for the installation of a second Pelletron Accelerator at CASP in 2009. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry commended the family’s philanthropy, stating: “Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq’s legacy goes beyond his immense scientific contributions; it lives on in the generations of students he mentored. This generous endowment ensures that his mission of empowering young scholars will continue uninterrupted. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Rizwan-ul-Haque Rana and Mrs. Eloisa Rana for this noble cause, which will profoundly support our talented students in CASP.” The scholarships at GCU Lahore have been categorised into the Prof. Faizan Ul Haq Golden Scholarship, the Shah Begum & Ghulam Dastgir Golden Scholarship, and the Mr. Rizwan Ul Haque Rana & Mrs. Eloisa Rana Golden Scholarship. In addition to the endowment at GCU Lahore, the family has also established six golden scholarships, backed by a Rs6 million endowment, for physics students at Government College Women University (GCWU) Sialkot. Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, former GCU Vice Chancellor and current Vice Chancellor of GCWU Sialkot, said Prof. Faizan believed in combining theoretical physics with real hands-on experience, training students in techniques ranging from glass blowing and spot welding to fabricating nuclear detectors. “He was an unsung hero who produced skilled, trained, talented, and well-groomed students,” Dr. Bashir stated. “This tremendous contribution to such a noble cause confirms that his good work will continue shaping the futures of thousands of students.”

    Google’s new AI satellite image tool raises fears over fake visuals

    Google has introduced a new artificial intelligence feature for Google Earth that allows users to create AI generated images using satellite, aerial and three dimensional mapping data. While the company says the tool is designed to support creative and practical uses, researchers and digital investigation experts have expressed concern that it could make it easier to produce convincing fake satellite images. The new feature, called Create Image, was launched on Thursday and uses Google’s Nano Banana 2 image generation technology. It enables users to zoom into locations on Google Earth and generate realistic visualisations within seconds using existing mapping data. Google said the tool is intended to help people visualise historical scenes, develop real estate plans and explore other creative projects. However, experts who specialise in verifying online content warn that the technology could be exploited to spread false information and manipulate public opinion. Open source intelligence researchers say Google Earth has long been considered one of the most trusted resources for checking locations, analysing events and verifying images. They fear that adding AI generated content to the platform could blur the line between authentic satellite imagery and fabricated visuals. Digital investigations expert Henk Van Ess criticised the update, arguing that Google spent years building public trust in its mapping service but has now introduced a feature capable of generating fictional scenes. He warned that even if an AI generated image is not perfect, it could still appear believable because it is linked to a platform widely regarded as reliable. Brady Africk, a research analyst at the American Enterprise Institute who specialises in satellite image analysis, also raised concerns about the technology. He said the update makes it easier to create realistic fake satellite images that could spread rapidly on social media and mislead the public. According to Africk, the growing availability of AI generated imagery could also weaken confidence in genuine satellite photographs. He warned that journalists, researchers and fact checkers may find it increasingly difficult to distinguish authentic images from manipulated ones, making investigations more challenging. In response to the criticism, Google said all images created through the new feature include its SynthID digital watermark technology. The invisible watermark is embedded into AI generated content to help identify that it was produced using Google’s artificial intelligence tools. The company also said users can ask its Gemini chatbot to check whether an image contains a SynthID watermark, providing an additional method for verifying AI generated content. The launch comes as technology companies continue expanding the use of generative artificial intelligence across their products. At the same time, governments, researchers and technology experts are calling for stronger safeguards to prevent AI tools from being used to create misleading content or spread disinformation.
