Busy Philipps reveals rare brain tumour diagnosis and surgeries

Busy Philipps has opened up about one of the most frightening periods of her life, revealing that she was diagnosed with a rare malignant brain tumour earlier this year and underwent two surgeries during what she described as the “weirdest six months” of her life.

The 47-year-old actress, best known for her work in Dawson’s Creek, Freaks and Geeks, Cougar Town and Girls5eva, shared details of her health battle in an emotional interview with People. Philipps said she is now grateful to be alive after doctors discovered a tumour in the frontal lobe of her brain despite her having no obvious warning signs.

The tumour was found after Philipps underwent a full-body Prenuvo scan in February. She had initially considered cancelling the appointment, but her ex-husband, Marc Silverstein, encouraged her to go ahead with it. The timing was particularly emotional because her former Dawson’s Creek co-star James Van Der Beek had died shortly before the scan following his battle with cancer.

Philipps recalled that she did not have typical symptoms associated with a brain tumour, such as seizures. She simply felt that something was telling her to get the scan. The examination eventually revealed a mass measuring around 2.6 centimetres in her brain.

Doctors diagnosed her with a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare and slow-growing type of brain tumour. Although the tumour is classified as malignant because of its potential to return over time, her medical team explained that this type has one of the more favourable prognoses among malignant gliomas. Early detection also allowed doctors to act before the condition became more serious.

Following the diagnosis, Philipps underwent a major operation on March 2 to remove the tumour. She later faced another serious setback when a staphylococcus infection developed at the surgical site. The complication required a second operation to treat the infection and clean the affected area.

The actress has described the entire experience as physically and emotionally overwhelming. During her initial conversation with her doctor, Philipps even managed to bring some humour into the frightening situation. She asked how quickly she could return to work after surgery and jokingly wondered whether her doctor could perform a brow lift while removing the mass from her frontal lobe.

Despite everything she went through, Philipps was able to return to work after her recovery. She is continuing to undergo regular medical scans so doctors can monitor her condition and check for any possible recurrence. At present, she does not need chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

Philipps has also spoken about the importance of listening to one’s instincts and being willing to seek medical answers even when something does not appear obviously wrong. Her decision to proceed with the scan ultimately led to the discovery of a tumour she did not know was there.

For fans of Philipps and Van Der Beek, their connection goes back to Dawson’s Creek, the popular teen drama that aired from 1998 to 2003. Philipps joined the series in its later seasons as Audrey Liddell, while Van Der Beek played the title character, Dawson Leery. The two remained connected with their former co-stars even after the series ended.

Looking ahead, Philipps is continuing her acting career. She is set to appear in Cupertino, a new CBS drama, while her other upcoming work includes the horror-comedy Horrified, featuring Julie Benz and Ron Perlman.

After surviving such a difficult chapter, Philipps is now focusing on her recovery, her family and returning to work. Her story has also highlighted how unexpected medical discoveries can sometimes come from taking action even when there are no clear symptoms.

By sharing her experience publicly, Philipps hopes to encourage people to pay attention to their bodies, ask questions and seek medical advice when something does not feel right. Her journey from an unexpected diagnosis to recovery has been difficult, but she says she is ultimately grateful for the chance to move forward.

Romania shuts final nuclear reactor as severe Danube drought forces emergency energy measures

Romania has completed a full shutdown of its Cernavoda nuclear power plant after severe drought dropped water levels in the Danube River to historic lows. The plant, which relies on the Danube for cooling and typically provides 20% of the country’s electricity generation, took its second reactor offline following the prior closure of its first reactor in late July. State operator Nuclearelectrica stated that the second reactor was shut down due to the ongoing drop in water levels, with no restart anticipated for at least ten days. To mitigate the energy shortfall, Romania declared a state of emergency for August, activated a 330-megawatt lignite-fired power plant, and requested that major industrial consumers and households curb power use during peak hours. Major automakers including Dacia and Ford have paused domestic production to help conserve power. The total shutdown immediately threatens energy security in neighbouring Moldova, which relies on Romanian imports to cover up to 60% of its electricity deficits. Moldovan authorities warned of potential rolling power cuts if alternative supplies cannot be secured from Ukraine or Western Europe. Across Europe, low river levels have similarly forced nuclear output reductions in France and triggered emergency engineering interventions in Hungary.

Six militants killed in Mastung security operation

Six suspected militants were killed and several others, including male and female suicide bombers, were arrested during an intelligence-based operation carried out by security forces in the Khad Kocha area of Mastung district, Balochistan, on Thursday. The operation was conducted as part of the ongoing Operation Shaban, a joint counterterrorism campaign involving the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps (FC) and Balochistan Police. The campaign was launched after the terrorist attack on the Mangi Dam Police Station and continues in different parts of the province to eliminate militant networks. According to official sources, security forces launched the raid after receiving credible intelligence about the presence of militants in the area. During the operation, troops surrounded the suspected hideouts and engaged the militants in an exchange of fire. Officials said six militants were killed during the operation, while several others were taken into custody. Those arrested included alleged facilitators as well as male and female suicide bombers who were reportedly planning future attacks. Security personnel also destroyed multiple militant hideouts and recovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition and explosives from the site. The military said security forces have intensified intelligence-based operations across Balochistan to dismantle terrorist networks and prevent attacks on civilians and security personnel. Officials maintained that such operations would continue until militant infrastructure is completely dismantled. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the security forces for the successful operation and commended their professionalism and courage. He said the forces had once again foiled the plans of militants attempting to spread violence and instability in Balochistan. He added that the government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism remains unwavering and that the entire nation stands with the armed forces and law enforcement agencies in their efforts to restore peace and stability. The latest operation came only hours after unidentified gunmen attacked a vehicle carrying members of the judiciary on the National Highway in Mastung. A district and sessions judge and his security guard were killed in the attack, while an additional sessions judge and another person suffered serious injuries. Security forces later cordoned off the area, launched a search operation and established checkpoints to trace the attackers. The operation also follows another series of intelligence-based raids carried out a day earlier, during which security forces killed 10 suspected militants and arrested two female suicide bombers along with a facilitator in different areas of Balochistan.

PPP workers’ convention in Lahore faces hurd…

LAHORE: Preparations for the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) workers’ convention at Greater Iqbal Park were halted on Friday after the Lahore district administration said the party had not secured formal written permission to hold the event. The party had already set up a stage and made extensive arrangements for the convention, which is scheduled for July 25. The gathering was also expected to be followed by celebrations marking President Asif Ali Zardari’s birthday on July 26. District authorities questioned the use of the public venue without official approval and asked the PPP leadership to explain why preparations had begun before the necessary permission was obtained. Lahore PPP President Faisal Mir insisted the party had moved forward after receiving verbal assurances that there was no objection to the event from the Punjab Chief Minister’s Office. According to him, the preparations were launched in good faith based on those assurances, but officials later intervened and stopped the work. Mir criticized the administration’s actions, claiming access to the venue had been restricted and vehicles carrying chairs and other equipment had been prevented from reaching the site. He maintained that the party remained committed to holding the convention peacefully and said he was prepared to face arrest if necessary. The Chief Minister’s Office did not comment on claims that approval had been communicated through the chief minister’s principal secretary. PPP leaders also shared videos on social media showing workers at the venue, along with the stage and seating arrangements prepared for the convention, reaffirming the party’s determination to proceed with the event. Party sources acknowledged that written permission had not been obtained but argued that verbal approval was sufficient to begin preparations. They added that local police had been informed in advance about the gathering. The convention was expected to feature a large stage, with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari scheduled to address workers via video link. Senior party leaders, including Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Hassan Murtaza, and Qamar Zaman Kaira, were also expected to attend. Officials indicated that permission could still be granted if the required formalities were completed. However, they noted that approving the PPP event without following standard procedures could complicate decisions on similar requests from other political parties, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has sought permission for a public gathering in Lahore next month.

Spiderman-A Brand New Day- a film of identity and resilience

“I am not just Peter Parker, I am Spiderman, and sometimes Spiderman has to do hard things, leaving Peter Parker’s heart broken.” This sentence lies at the heart of the film. Spiderman must help the people of New York even if that comes at the cost of his personal happiness. He has distanced himself from those he used to know, such as his girlfriend MJ and his friend Ned. Spider-Man: A Brand New Day has been directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is a Marvel Studios production. It falls into the genre of action, sci-fi and adventure. With a runtime of 2 hours and 24 minutes, it has been rated at 8.2/10 on IMDB. The plot is a fight of good against evil. The damage control centre kills Sarah, Jean’s sister, for her special powers. Jean is in their imprisonment. Bill, the director of Damage Control, seeks Spider-Man’s help to eliminate Jean. Spiderman does not know the truth, and he helps Bill. What is the truth? Will Spider-Man find out in time? The film follows a flashback where Jean and Sarah are together, and the damage control employees kidnap Sarah. The damage control is after V. Max, and no one knows what it is. Jean possesses extraordinary psychic abilities. Jean can get into people’s minds. She can control their minds and possess them. She has powers she cannot curb. As Spiderman follows the trail and puts two and two together, he realises Bill was the real culprit. As Jean tries to destroy Bill, Spiderman convinces her not to. Once again, the film shows that Spider-Man’s greatest strength is compassion and not brute force. Spiderman helps Jean understand the healing power of love. He promises to stay by her side. In the subplot is Peter Parker’s romantic relationship with MJ (Zendaya). The relationship on the verge of destruction is restored as MJ remembers the time she spent with Peter. Spiderman is severely injured at the end, and as Jean uses her magical powers to cure him, she is successful. The film offers a bit of comic relief when Spider-Man exits the hospital without being noticed. It sends the audience into peals of laughter. The characterisation is superb. Tom Holland’s (Peter Parker) performance is outstanding. Tom appears as a more mature Spider-Man who carries the burden of immense personal sacrifice without losing his compassion and sense of humour. Zendaya (MJ) also spontaneously delivers her role. The chemistry between the two is striking despite the heartbreaking distance between them. Visually, the film is spectacular. The web singing sequences through NewYork are exhilarating, and the cinematography is great. The thematic concerns are of identity, sacrifice, loneliness and hope. Peter’s struggle to rebuild his life after having lost everything makes him more relatable than ever.
