Pakistan’s private sector borrowing recorded its strongest growth in four years during the fiscal year 2025–26, signaling renewed business confidence and improving economic activity, according to Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Shahzad.

Shahzad said private sector credit expanded by nearly 15 percent over the fiscal year, with total lending reaching Rs1.138 trillion. He described the increase as a positive indicator of strengthening economic momentum, driven by greater financial support for businesses and productive sectors.

According to the adviser, around 89 percent of the new loans were directed toward key segments of the economy, including manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, and agriculture. These sectors have played a central role in boosting production, expanding commercial activity, and encouraging private investment.

The manufacturing sector emerged as the largest beneficiary, receiving Rs657 billion in fresh financing. Shahzad noted that the substantial flow of credit reflects increased industrial expansion, higher production capacity, and growing confidence among manufacturers.

He added that improved access to financing for the trade and agriculture sectors has further strengthened business operations and supported economic growth across the country.

Shahzad emphasized that the surge in private sector lending demonstrates rising investor confidence and reflects Pakistan’s continued progress toward greater economic stability, stronger industrial performance, and a more resilient business environment.

    Spain tightens Italy border checks amid migration dispute

Italy has stressed that its checks are targeted rather than a blanket restriction on European travellers. Officials said Spanish and other European Union citizens would not be affected by the measures, which focus mainly on non-EU nationals travelling from Spain by air or sea. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Rome hoped to remove the restrictions as soon as the perceived security risk had eased. The latest developments have raised concerns about tensions within the European Union’s passport-free travel system. The Schengen Area allows people to move across 29 European countries without routine internal border checks, although individual member states can temporarily restore controls in response to security threats, public-order concerns or exceptional circumstances.

The company had challenged a demand raised by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The FBR had issued a notice to the private company. The notice required the company to pay super tax. The company approached the Islamabad High Court after receiving the notice. It argued that its available tax credit should be allowed to adjust against the super tax liability. The Islamabad High Court rejected the company’s petition. The company then challenged that decision before the Federal Constitutional Court. The Federal Constitutional Court has now accepted the company’s appeals. It has declared that tax credits available to a taxpayer can be adjusted against super tax. The court referred to the relevant provisions of the tax law. It observed that the tax credit available under Section 168 is a separate and legally recognised right. According to the judgment, a taxpayer should not be prevented from using this credit for adjustment. The court said forcing a taxpayer to seek only a refund would not be consistent with the intention of the law. The judgment also addressed the interpretation of financial and tax laws. The court observed that such laws should be interpreted in a manner that facilitates taxpayers. The court emphasised that taxpayers should be able to exercise rights provided to them under the law. A legal right to a tax credit cannot be unnecessarily restricted through an interpretation that creates additional difficulties for taxpayers. The court also issued directions to the FBR. The FBR has been directed to examine the taxpayer’s claim for adjustment. The department must consider the claim in response to the tax notice. The FBR will now have to decide the matter according to the applicable law and the court’s ruling. The judgment provides an important clarification for corporate taxpayers. It establishes that an eligible tax credit can be considered for adjustment against a super tax liability. The ruling may also have wider implications for companies facing similar tax demands. Businesses with legally available tax credits may now rely on the court’s interpretation when seeking adjustments against their tax liabilities. By setting aside the Islamabad High Court’s decision, the Federal Constitutional Court has clarified the legal position on the issue. The case also highlights the continuing dispute between taxpayers and the FBR over the interpretation and application of tax laws.

    Lahore – A total of 50,000 scholarship cards have been announced for Pakistani youth with the deadline for submitting applications set for August 21, 2026. According to details, the Hunarmand Punjab Advanced IT and Technical Training Program has been launched to promote digital and technical skills among Pakistani youth. The deadline for applications for the program is August 21, 2026. Eligibility criteria All Pakistani citizens aged 15 to 50 years who have at least a matriculation-level education are eligible to apply for the program. Under the initiative, 50,000 scholarship cards will be distributed across the country. Of these, 25,000 will be allocated to Punjab while the remaining 25,000 will be distributed among Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan. Applicants will be required to obtain at least 85% marks in the final evaluation test and fulfill the other program requirements to qualify for a scholarship card. According to the announced merit criteria, candidates who secure 85% marks may qualify for fee reimbursement. Candidates scoring 86% to 88% will be eligible for a solar panel while those securing 89% to 91% will be offered a Chromebook. Candidates who score 92% to 94% will be eligible for a laptop while those obtaining 95% or above will be offered an e-bike. The training program includes courses in more than 30 fields including artificial intelligence, digital marketing, web development, graphic designing, e-commerce, cybersecurity, data science, freelancing, video editing, app development and YouTube monetization. Other courses offered under the program include Amazon Virtual Assistant, Shopify and Daraz business, WordPress, React and Node.js, MERN Stack, PHP Laravel, Python programming, machine learning, SEO, Google Ads, IELTS preparation, textile designing, digital embroidery and penetration testing among others.
