Thai Cyber Police Dismantle Major Concert Ticket Scam Syndicate, Arresting Seven

BANGKOK, Thailand — Thai authorities have successfully dismantled a sophisticated online fraud network that defrauded nearly 1,000 concertgoers out of more than 3.7 million baht, resulting in the arrest of seven suspects across multiple provinces. The crackdown was executed through a coordinated effort between the Anti Cyber Scam Center (ACSC) and the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).

Thailand Consumers Council Sues Meta, LINE, And Apple Over Online Investment Scams

The arrests took place on Wednesday following a series of targeted raids conducted in Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, and Phuket. Law enforcement officials apprehended the alleged mastermind of the operation, alongside several accomplices who served as mule account holders and cash withdrawers. The syndicate was specifically designed to exploit the high demand for live entertainment, preying on fans desperate to attend sold-out concerts and major music festivals.

Investigators revealed that the criminal network operated primarily through the social media platform X. The scammers utilized high-follower accounts to project an image of legitimacy, advertising altered and watermarked images of genuine electronic tickets. To further deceive potential victims and build a false sense of security, the syndicate employed doctored identification cards that matched the details of the mule bank accounts used to receive the fraudulent payments.

Once the victims transferred the funds for the non-existent tickets, the syndicate immediately initiated a rapid money-laundering process. The stolen money was quickly routed through a complex web of multiple bank accounts before being swiftly withdrawn as physical cash by the designated mules, making the financial trail difficult to trace.

During the execution of the search warrants, police seized significant physical and digital evidence, including 10 bank books, four mobile phones, and a vehicle. A comprehensive digital forensic review of the confiscated devices uncovered a massive operational footprint. Investigators linked over 350 X accounts to the syndicate, which were directly tied to at least 739 confirmed fraud cases. Given the scale of the digital infrastructure and the widespread nature of the advertisements, authorities believe the actual number of victims is significantly higher and are urging additional victims to come forward.

The operation highlights the ongoing efforts by Thai law enforcement to combat the rising tide of cybercrime and online fraud, which has increasingly targeted consumers in the entertainment and ticketing sectors. The ACSC and CIB have reiterated their commitment to aggressively pursuing transnational and domestic cyber syndicates, emphasizing that digital platforms will not be allowed to serve as safe havens for criminal exploitation.

The seven suspects have been taken into custody and will face formal charges related to public fraud, computer crime offenses, and money laundering. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to trace the remaining illicit funds and identify any additional networks or accomplices involved in the ticketing scam.

Spain accuses EU allies of ‘selfish’ r…

Spain has accused several European Union governments of a selfish and unlawful reaction after nearly 60,000 migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, triggering a wave of statements from EU member states calling for tighter border restrictions. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, in a letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, described the response from unnamed member states as selfish, polarizing and unlawful. According to a report by the British broadcaster, Sanchez said Madrid had restored order within 48 hours, returning most of the migrants to Morocco and preventing them from reaching mainland Europe. The diplomatic dispute was triggered largely by Italy’s response, which included a temporary suspension of visa free travel with Spain under the Schengen arrangement, along with pointed criticism accusing Madrid of encouraging human trafficking by granting citizenship to more than 500,000 people who had entered the country irregularly. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote on social media that he supports closing the Schengen area to Spain and expressed confidence in the actions of Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi. He said uncontrolled and irregular immigration represents a threat to national security, and argued that the situation unfolding in Ceuta demonstrates how Spain’s decision to naturalize large numbers of irregular immigrants was fundamentally wrong and only encourages trafficking. Italy was not alone in calling for a tougher stance. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis went further, calling for Spain to be suspended immediately from the 29 member Schengen arrangement. Finland and Denmark also voiced support for stricter border controls in response to the crisis. Notably, Ceuta itself lies outside the Schengen zone, meaning the enclave is not directly governed by the same free movement rules at the center of the diplomatic dispute between Madrid and its European partners. The clash highlights long standing tensions within the European Union over how to handle migration pressure at its external borders, an issue that has repeatedly strained relations between member states with differing approaches to asylum policy, border enforcement and integration in recent years.

Maryam orders fire safety checks at Rawalpindi hos…

RAWALPINDI: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered authorities to ensure complete fire safety arrangements at all government hospitals in Rawalpindi. The chief minister has also sought a detailed report from Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Nadeem Nasir about the safety arrangements at government hospitals across the city. The directive comes amid growing concerns over fire safety at healthcare facilities following the deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. Deputy Commissioner Nadeem Nasir said authorities would ensure the installation of proper fire safety systems in all government hospitals. He said work had already started on the installation of fire hydrants at hospitals. The facilities will also be checked to ensure that emergency arrangements are functional and accessible. On the deputy commissioner’s instructions, the Additional Deputy Commissioner visited government hospitals along with Rescue teams. The teams inspected the hospitals and reviewed their existing fire safety arrangements. They also examined the facilities required to respond to an emergency. Officials are focusing on three key areas. These include fire alarms, fire hydrants and emergency exits. The administration has been directed to ensure that fire alarms are operational and that hydrants are available at appropriate locations. Emergency exits are also being checked to ensure that patients, attendants and hospital staff can leave buildings quickly during an emergency. The deputy commissioner said the safety of patients was the administration’s top priority. He warned that no negligence would be tolerated in implementing fire safety measures. The inspection campaign is aimed at identifying weaknesses before they lead to a major incident. Authorities are also expected to take corrective measures wherever deficiencies are found. Government hospitals handle large numbers of patients every day. Many patients are also critically ill and cannot be moved quickly during an emergency. Officials therefore consider functional fire prevention and evacuation systems essential for protecting patients and medical staff.

IMF pushes Pakistan provinces for rs430bn tax incr…

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked Pakistan’s provincial governments to generate an additional Rs430 billion in tax revenue during the current fiscal year, as part of broader efforts to strengthen public finances and increase provincial own-source revenues. According to official details, the proposed increase in tax collection is equivalent to 0.3 per cent of Pakistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is expected to be shared among the four provinces in line with their allocations under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. The move is aimed at improving fiscal sustainability by encouraging provinces to rely more on locally generated revenues rather than transfers from the federal government. Officials believe stronger provincial tax collection would also help create greater financial discipline and support long-term economic reforms. Sources said each province would contribute to the additional revenue target based on its respective share under the NFC formula, although specific collection targets for individual provinces have yet to be announced. The recommendation comes as Pakistan continues implementing economic reforms under its programme with the IMF, with revenue mobilisation remaining one of the key priorities for both the federal and provincial governments. Meanwhile, the federal government has decided to establish an inter-ministerial committee, to be headed by the prime minister, for the implementation of decisions made by the National Economic Council (NEC). According to officials, the committee will include federal and provincial ministers along with senior government representatives. It will be responsible for monitoring the execution of national policies, reviewing progress on major development initiatives and ensuring timely implementation of decisions taken by the NEC. The committee is also expected to strengthen coordination between the federation and the provinces, particularly on economic planning, fiscal reforms and development projects that require close cooperation among different levels of government. Government sources said improved coordination is considered essential for achieving national economic objectives and ensuring that development programmes are implemented efficiently across the country. Economists say increasing provincial tax revenues has long been a key recommendation of international financial institutions, which argue that greater fiscal autonomy can improve governance, reduce dependence on federal transfers and create a more balanced financial system. The IMF’s latest recommendation is likely to shape upcoming provincial budgetary decisions as governments evaluate measures to expand their tax base while balancing the need to protect economic activity. The proposed revenue measures are expected to remain a major focus of fiscal policy discussions in the months ahead.
