Thai Police Rescue Chinese Student From Transnational ‘virtual Kidnapping’ Scam

BANGKOK, Thailand — Thai authorities have successfully rescued a 21-year-old Chinese university student who was coerced by a transnational scam syndicate into staging her own abduction, a sophisticated “virtual kidnapping” scheme designed to extort millions in ransom from her family in Hong Kong.

The rescue operation was launched after cross-border coordination between Thai and Hong Kong law enforcement agencies. The scam syndicate had been demanding a ransom of approximately 3 million Hong Kong dollars, equivalent to roughly 12.5 million baht, threatening the life of the student, whose name has been withheld for privacy and legal reasons.

This incident marked the second time the family had been targeted by the same criminal network. According to Hong Kong police, the parents had previously paid a ransom of about 3 million baht in May under the belief that their daughter had been physically abducted and was being held for release. However, when the scammers renewed their extortion attempt, the parents grew suspicious that the abduction was a fabricated ruse and immediately alerted authorities.

The turning point in the case occurred on June 1, when the parents received a harrowing video clip from the scammers. The footage showed the student in captivity, her hands bound and her face bearing visible bruises, seemingly the result of an assault by her captors. Along with the video, the syndicate issued an ultimatum demanding the 3 million Hong Kong dollar ransom. Refusing to pay a second time, the parents contacted the police, triggering the international investigation.

Thai police quickly traced the victim’s movements and discovered that she had arrived in Bangkok from Hong Kong earlier that same day. Investigators found that the student had initially checked into a hotel in the Lat Krabang area, where she purchased a rope and zip ties. She then used these items to stage the fake kidnapping scene, recording the distress video on her cellphone before transmitting it to the scam syndicate. Following the recording, the scammers ordered her to relocate to another hotel in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province.

Police Major Thiraphan Homchan, an inspector with the Anti-Human Trafficking sub-division, noted that the victim appeared to be under severe psychological manipulation. Investigators determined that the scam gang had subjected the student to intense mental coercion, effectively controlling her actions and compelling her to comply with their instructions to stage the elaborate hoax.

Acting on precise intelligence, Thai police tracked the victim to the Bang Phli hotel and executed a rescue operation on Tuesday. Officers intercepted the student just as she was actively communicating with the scam syndicate via a live video call, successfully extracting her from the situation without further harm. Following her rescue and medical evaluation, the student’s parents flew into Bangkok to reunite with her before returning immediately to Hong Kong.

Police General Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, Deputy National Police Chief, addressed the broader implications of the case, noting that while virtual kidnapping remains relatively rare in Thailand, the transnational scam is proliferating across several countries. He advised the public to remain highly vigilant and to verify the safety of their relatives through direct, independent channels if they receive sudden distress calls demanding money for an alleged captivity.

The Royal Thai Police, in conjunction with the Anti-Human Trafficking Division and international partners, have launched a comprehensive manhunt to identify and apprehend the masterminds behind the scam syndicate. Investigators are currently analyzing digital footprints, financial transactions, and communication records to dismantle the network and prevent further extortion attempts.

Experts believe the alleged move raises questions about possible links between the banned group and India. They said the promotion of the committee’s material from the Indian side could indicate an attempt to exploit political and social issues in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Defence analyst and retired Major General Zahid Mahmood said people were already aware of claims regarding foreign involvement in the activities of the banned Action Committee. He said information about alleged external support had previously emerged through what he described as reliable sources. Mahmood said efforts had been made to develop a specific narrative about Azad Jammu and Kashmir. According to him, the objective was to damage the broader Kashmir freedom movement and create divisions among the people. He alleged that India and other international actors were playing a role in shaping narratives related to Kashmir. The retired general also claimed that some international forces and media groups were helping promote these narratives. He said such efforts could be aimed at influencing public opinion and weakening support for the Kashmir cause. Security sources maintained that the alleged circulation of the videos was part of a broader attempt to provoke anti-Pakistan sentiments. They said the use of material associated with the banned committee could also be intended to create political unrest and confusion among the public. The allegations come amid continued tensions surrounding political developments in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.     AJK sets August 24 polling for eight reserved seat…

    The Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has issued the schedule for elections to eight reserved seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly. According to the schedule, candidates will submit their nomination papers on August 20. The nomination process will be completed under the supervision of the Election Commission. The final list of candidates will be issued on August 23. The list will contain the names of candidates who qualify to contest the reserved-seat elections. Polling will be held on August 24. The voting will take place inside the AJK Legislative Assembly. The eight reserved seats cover different categories. Five seats have been reserved for women. One seat is allocated to Ulema and Mashaikh. Another seat has been reserved for overseas Kashmiris. The remaining one seat is for a technocrat. The Election Commission has announced the schedule to ensure that the election process is completed within the prescribed timeframe. Candidates and concerned political parties will have to complete the nomination process according to the announced dates. The reserved seats are part of the AJK Legislative Assembly’s overall composition. The upcoming polling will fill the eight seats allocated to these specific categories.

    President delays assent for 19 high court judges

    The appointment of 19 additional judges to four high courts remains pending as President Asif Ali Zardari has yet to approve the summary. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) approved the nominations during meetings held on July 20 and 21. The proposed appointments involve the Lahore High Court, Sindh High Court, Balochistan High Court and Islamabad High Court. Nine days have passed since the JCP approved the nominations. However, the president has not yet given his assent to the summary. The delay has caused concern within the government. A senior cabinet member questioned why the approval had not yet been granted. The official argued that the summary was initiated by the JCP rather than the prime minister. Therefore, according to the government’s position, the president could not send it back to the prime minister for reconsideration. The official also warned that continued inaction could create further tension within the superior judiciary. The government’s legal team is reportedly examining possible options to address the issue. The matter has also exposed differences between the government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). According to government officials, the PPP leadership is unhappy with the JCP because some of its preferred nominees were not considered for judicial appointments. The PPP had shown particular interest in securing the appointment of two candidates to the Sindh High Court. However, neither the judicial nor executive members of the JCP supported their nominations. Officials said the candidates were below the age of 45. Both government and judicial representatives reportedly agreed that nominees below that age should not be approved. PPP Senator Farooq H Naek, a senior legal figure and member of the JCP, had proposed 33 candidates for the four high courts. His proposed list included 16 candidates for the Sindh High Court, 10 for the Lahore High Court, five for the Balochistan High Court and two for the Islamabad High Court. A member of the commission said the PPP could potentially have secured appointments for other candidates from interior Sindh. Some of those candidates were considered sympathetic to the party. However, the commission member claimed that the party’s insistence on its two preferred nominees affected the outcome. The dispute comes amid wider political and judicial developments involving Sindh. JCP judicial members have already reached a consensus on the performance of constitutional benches in the Sindh High Court. The judges serving on those benches were given three months to demonstrate their performance. The commission’s judicial members also opposed the confirmation of Sindh High Court Additional Judge Syed Fiaz ul Hassan Shah. The development was viewed by some political circles as another setback for the PPP. The party has historically sought influence over judicial appointments in Sindh and other provinces. Last year, the PPP was able to influence appointments in several high courts, including the Sindh High Court, Peshawar High Court and Lahore High Court. The judicial landscape has also changed following the 27th Constitutional Amendment. After the amendment, Justice K K Agha was elevated to the newly established Federal Constitutional Court. Another judge of the Sindh High Court was transferred to the Islamabad High Court.

    The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association (APPPOA) has announced a nationwide strike beginning Wednesday night after negotiations with the government over the proposed daily petroleum pricing mechanism ended without an agreement. The decision was announced following talks between representatives of the association and a government delegation led by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik. The discussions focused on the government’s plan to introduce daily fuel price adjustments, but both sides failed to reach a consensus. Speaking after the meeting, APPPOA leaders said the proposed pricing system was unacceptable and would seriously affect the financial stability of petrol pump owners across the country. They argued that the new mechanism would create uncertainty for businesses already operating on narrow profit margins. Association officials said nearly 15,000 petrol pumps across Pakistan are expected to remain closed if the strike goes ahead, warning that the shutdown could disrupt fuel supplies nationwide. Vice Chairman Nauman Ali Butt said petrol dealers wanted petroleum prices to continue being revised on a monthly basis rather than daily. He also pointed out that dealers’ commissions had not been increased for the past three years despite rising operating costs. APPPOA Chairman Humayun Khan said petrol pump owners were already facing financial pressure due to regulatory requirements, policies of oil marketing companies and increasing business expenses. He argued that daily price revisions would benefit oil marketing companies while placing additional risks on retail dealers. According to the association, frequent price changes could create confusion in the market and make inventory management more difficult for petrol pump operators. The association also criticised the government for introducing the policy without consulting key stakeholders. It urged authorities to suspend the daily pricing mechanism, increase dealers’ commissions and involve petrol pump owners in future policy decisions. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) said it would hold a meeting of its executive committee on Wednesday to decide whether it would also join the nationwide strike. PPDA representatives acknowledged that discussions with government officials and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had taken place. They said OGRA officials sought additional time to review the concerns raised by dealers before making further recommendations to the government. The government maintains that the new pricing mechanism is intended to improve transparency and ensure domestic fuel prices reflect changes in international oil markets more quickly. Under the proposed system, petroleum prices would be updated daily using a rolling average of global market prices.
