Chinese Man Sentenced to 46 Years in Prison After Discovery of Massive Military Grade Weapons Cache in Pattaya

A 31-year-old Chinese national has been sentenced to 46 years in a Thai prison for the illegal possession of military-grade weapons, C4 explosives, an explosive vest, signal-jamming equipment, body armor, grenades, and other prohibited military hardware, the Pattaya Provincial Court ruled on August 4th, 2026.
Mingchen Sun, 31, who holds Chinese, Dominica, and Cambodian passports, pleaded guilty to charges under the Firearms Act, Arms Control Act and Radio Communications Act. The court reduced the sentence by one-third in light of his guilty plea but imposed consecutive terms totaling 44 years and 24 months (equivalent to 46 years), citing the serious threat the offences posed to public safety and national security. Note: Under Thai law, however, the maximum time he can likely actually serve is 20 years. All seized items were confiscated.
The case originated on the evening of May 8th, 2026, when officers from Na Jomtien Police Station responded to a sedan that had overturned in Banglamung district. Sun was the driver; a Taiwanese woman accompanying him was initially held but later not linked to the weapons and released. A handgun discovered in the vehicle caused a search of his rented house in the Maple Housing Estate in tambon Huai Yai.
There, police uncovered a large arsenal that included M4 and M16 assault rifles, a Glock 9mm pistol, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and magazines, nearly 5 kilograms of C4 plastic explosive (some configured in body-armour vests with remote detonators resembling explosive vests), Russian-made POMZ-2 anti-personnel mines, various hand grenades (including Korean and other types), detonators, body armour, gas masks, gasoline cans, radio signal jammers and communication devices. Some items bore markings linked to Thai military production.
Sun initially claimed he was a depressed firearms enthusiast planning a complex suicide, a statement police rejected. Investigations later linked him to Cambodian-based scam networks and possible internal criminal conflicts rather than planned attacks inside Thailand. Thai media reported he had entered the country legally on a long-term privilege visa, held a non-Thai national ID card, and lived relatively unnoticed for about two years while renting the property for 38,000 baht per month. Immigration authorities revoked his visa following the arrest.
A second unidentified defendant linked to the procurement of the weapons has denied the charges although remains in custody. As this individual is fighting the case their trial is likely to take significantly longer to carry to a verdict. The judgment for Mingchen Sun, meanwhile, came less than three months after the arrest, showing coordinated work by police, prosecutors and the judiciary.
The case drew big attention from Thai security agencies due to the scale of the cache and its potential links to transnational crime. Expanded probes led to additional arrests and asset freezes connected to broader networks.
