The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has officially notified the results of the first phase of the Legislative Assembly elections.

The notification confirms a strong performance by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the Mirpur Division.

The PML-N won nine of the 13 seats contested in the first phase. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured the remaining four seats.

The official notification formally declared all successful candidates elected. It also included their parentage, political affiliation and constituencies.

In Mirpur district, four assembly seats were contested.

The PML-N won two seats. Azhar Sadiq and Chaudhry Rukhsar Ahmed were declared successful.

The PPP also won two seats in the district. Qasim Majid and Chaudhry Yasir Sultan secured victories for the party.

The PML-N delivered its strongest performance in Bhimber district.

The party won all three constituencies in the district. Colonel (retd) Waqar Ahmed Noor, Chaudhry Abdul Razzaq and Chaudhry Tariq Farooq were declared winners.

Kotli district had six constituencies.

The PML-N secured four of them. Umair Naeem, Raja Muhammad Asif, Raja Riasat Khan and Raja Ayaz Ahmed won their respective constituencies.

The PPP captured two seats in Kotli. Malik Zafar Iqbal and Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin were declared successful.

With the notification, the election authority has formally confirmed all 13 members elected from the Mirpur Division.

The results give the PML-N an early advantage in the three-phase AJK election.

The party now enters the next stage with nine seats from the first phase. The PPP has four seats and remains a key political force in the division.

Attention has now shifted towards the second phase of polling.

The second phase is scheduled for August 2. Voting will take place across the Muzaffarabad Division.

The phase will include nine general constituencies in Muzaffarabad, Jhelum Valley and Neelum Valley.

It will also include 12 reserved seats for refugees from Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir residing in Pakistan.

The third and final phase will be held in the Rawalakot Division.

The final phase will cover constituencies in Rawalakot, Sudhnoti, Bagh and Haveli.

Political parties are expected to intensify their campaigns ahead of the remaining phases.

The PML-N’s strong opening performance has increased pressure on rival parties. The upcoming rounds will determine whether the party can maintain its momentum across other divisions.

    Karachi – The Sindh government has announced a public holiday on the occasion of Independence Day allowing citizens to enjoy three consecutive days off. According to details, the Government of Sindh has officially announced Friday, August 14, 2026 as a public holiday across the province on the occasion of Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day. A notification issued by the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department stated that the holiday will apply to all government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions, corporations and local councils under the administrative control of the Sindh government. However, institutions providing emergency and essential services will be exempt from the holiday and will continue their services as usual. As August 14 falls on a Friday followed by the regular Saturday and Sunday holidays, citizens will be able to enjoy three consecutive days off.

    Nawaz Sharif calls for better governance in AJK

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has urged political parties to keep their differences within the bounds of democratic competition, saying political rivalry should never turn into personal hostility. Addressing a meeting of the PML-N Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) parliamentary party in Murree, Nawaz congratulated the candidates who won seats in the AJK elections and called for greater financial support for the region. He said the federal government should provide AJK with maximum possible development funds so that the territory can improve its infrastructure and public services. He also directed the party leadership to examine the reasons behind the defeat of several strong PML-N candidates and learn from the election results. Nawaz said the party had secured victories in two phases of the electoral process, describing the results as another expression of public confidence in the PML-N. However, he cautioned that the party must deliver on its promises to retain that trust. “If the PML-N fails to deliver, the people here will become disappointed,” he said. The former prime minister stressed the need to improve roads, hospitals and other basic facilities across AJK. He said children in the region should also have access to modern educational opportunities and technology, including laptops. Nawaz credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts for the country’s ongoing development, saying Pakistan was moving forward. He called for AJK to experience similar progress and said the region should develop along the lines of Punjab. He stressed that the PML-N could not afford to disappoint voters who had placed their confidence in the party. Nawaz also expressed concern over complaints that emerged during the political process involving the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He said he had not expected the PPP to provide an opportunity for complaints, particularly given that the party had previously led the AJK government. “Some complaints reached us, and I was saddened by them,” Nawaz said, while emphasising the need for political parties to maintain respectful relations despite their differences. He said previous AJK governments had failed to fully meet public expectations and stressed that improving the welfare and living standards of the region’s people should remain the top priority. Nawaz maintained that the PML-N would continue to focus on development and public service while working to strengthen its political position in AJK.

    PDMA warns of flood risk as monsoon rains continue

    LAHORE: The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a fresh warning about possible flooding in several parts of the province as the fourth spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until August 5. The authority said that water levels in most of Punjab’s major rivers remain within the normal range. However, low and moderate flooding has been reported at a few locations, prompting authorities to remain on high alert. According to the latest monitoring report, the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej rivers are flowing normally. In contrast, the Indus River is experiencing low-level flooding at the Kalabagh and Chashma stations due to an increase in water discharge. Officials also reported moderate flooding at Nala Palkhu near Wazirabad, while low-level flooding has been observed in Nala Basantar and Nala Bein in Narowal district. Water flow in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, however, remains within safe limits. The PDMA warned that continued rainfall in the upper catchment areas could raise water levels in eastern rivers and seasonal streams over the next few days. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have directed district administrations to stay prepared for any emergency. PDMA Director General Saif Anwar said there is a possibility of urban flooding in major cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan, if heavy rainfall continues. He also cautioned that hilly areas such as Murree and the Galiyat region could face landslides because of persistent rain. Residents living near riverbanks, seasonal streams and other flood-prone areas have been advised to relocate to safer places without delay. Rescue and emergency teams have been instructed to remain on standby to respond to any developing situation. The Punjab government has established flood relief camps in vulnerable areas to provide shelter and assistance to affected families if required. Authorities have also urged the public to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
