Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held a series of high-level meetings with senior officials of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington to review Pakistan’s economic performance and discuss the progress of the country’s reform agenda.

The meetings included discussions with IMF First Deputy Managing Director Dan Katz, Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke, Middle East and Central Asia Department Director Jihad Azour, and IMF Mission Chief for Pakistan Iva Petrova.

During the talks, the finance minister presented an overview of Pakistan’s recent macroeconomic performance. He highlighted improvements in fiscal management, stronger external accounts, higher foreign exchange reserves, record inflows of overseas workers’ remittances, and a healthier current account position. He also noted that the government had met its revenue collection targets, which he said reflected the positive impact of ongoing economic reforms.

The discussions also focused on Pakistan’s progress under the IMF-supported Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). Both sides reviewed measures aimed at strengthening economic stability and ensuring long-term, sustainable growth.

Aurangzeb briefed IMF officials on reforms in taxation, the energy sector, public debt management, tariff rationalisation, and the government’s privatisation programme. He also discussed efforts to broaden financing sources, improve the investment climate, and restore Pakistan’s access to international capital markets.

The meetings further covered issues related to human capital development, increasing women’s participation in the economy, addressing demographic challenges, encouraging technology-led growth, and promoting private sector investment and export-driven development.

The finance minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline and implementing structural reforms. He said Pakistan would continue pursuing policies aimed at strengthening economic stability, improving investor confidence, and achieving long-term economic transformation.

During his visit to Washington, Aurangzeb also met John Jovanovic, President and Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, to discuss expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting focused on financing long-term development projects and increasing bilateral trade in agricultural commodities, including cotton and soybeans, as well as cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector. The two sides also explored opportunities to facilitate greater access to US financing, technology, equipment, and services for priority projects in Pakistan.

Officials agreed to identify short-term investment opportunities, appoint focal persons from both sides, and prepare a strategic cooperation framework. The proposed framework is expected to be finalised and signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in September 2026.

    US strikes Iran for 13th night as Trump escalates threats

Speaking earlier, President Trump said he was considering the largest military operation against Iran since the conflict began. He stated that preparations were complete and that a final decision could be taken soon if Iran continued its attacks on US allies and military assets in the region. The latest American strikes followed another round of Iranian missile and drone attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. Iranian military officials said the attacks targeted US military facilities stationed in those countries. Tehran described the strikes as retaliation for continued US attacks on Iranian territory and infrastructure. Iran also claimed responsibility for striking a telecommunications tower in Kuwait. Iranian officials said the attack was carried out in response to previous US strikes on communication facilities inside Iran. Kuwaiti authorities later confirmed that hostile drones also targeted the Abdali border crossing with Iraq, raising security concerns along the frontier. Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. The group warned that additional energy infrastructure could also become a target if the conflict continues. The growing violence has disrupted security across key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, both of which are among the world’s most important oil shipping corridors. Continued attacks have increased risks to commercial shipping and raised concerns over global energy supplies. The worsening conflict has also pushed international oil prices above $100 per barrel, reflecting fears of prolonged supply disruptions. Analysts warned that further escalation could place additional pressure on the global economy by increasing fuel prices, disrupting trade and creating greater uncertainty in international energy markets.

    Security forces have killed 10 militants of Fitna al-Khawarij in two separate operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The first operation was conducted in the Azam Warsak area of South Waziristan district after a group of militants attacked security forces’ check posts. According to ISPR, security personnel responded effectively to the attack, resulting in an exchange of fire. Eight militants were killed during the operation. The second operation was carried out in Dir district, where security forces killed two more militants. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the possession of the slain militants. ISPR said the militants killed in the operations had been involved in several terrorist activities in the area. The military’s media wing said security forces are continuing intelligence-based counterterrorism operations under the government’s vision of “Azm-e-Istehkam” to eliminate terrorism and maintain peace and stability in the region.

    JI seeks Rs1 billion damages from former FBR chief

    KARACHI: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has served a legal notice on former Federal Board of Revenue chairman Shabbar Zaidi. The party is seeking Rs1 billion in damages over remarks it says harmed its reputation. The notice relates to allegations made by Zaidi about the political party and its role in public protests. JI said the former FBR chief made the remarks during a podcast and later repeated them on different social media platforms. According to the party, the notice was issued on July 27 through Advocate Tahir Iqbal Malik. It was sent on the instructions of JI Karachi General Secretary Taufiquddin Siddiqui. JI has accused Zaidi of making serious and damaging claims. The party says the allegations suggested that it had received money to weaken or suppress public protests and political issues. The party also objected to comments in which Zaidi allegedly described JI as an “establishment firewall”. According to JI, the remarks created an impression that the party was working to dilute public concerns and protests. The legal notice claims that the statements included allegations of secret funding, bribery, corruption and political misconduct. It also alleges that the remarks suggested coordination between the party and state institutions. JI has demanded that Zaidi provide evidence to support his claims. The party has asked him to identify the person who allegedly made the payment and the individual who supposedly received it. The notice also seeks details about the alleged amount, including when and where the payment was made. JI has asked for information about the method of payment and any bank records or financial documents linked to the allegation. The party has further demanded evidence concerning the alleged protest or public issue. It has asked for the names of witnesses and any documents, recordings or other material that could support the claims. JI also wants Zaidi to disclose the source of the information on which his allegations were based. The party has said the claims should be backed by verifiable evidence. When approached for a response, Zaidi said he had forwarded the legal notice to his lawyer. He said he would seek legal advice on the matter. The dispute could now move into a legal phase if the former FBR chairman does not respond to the notice in the manner demanded by the party.
