Cristiano Ronaldo marries Georgina after 8-year love story

Cascais, Portugal: Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and his longtime partner Georgina Rodríguez have officially turned nearly a decade of love into marriage, marking a new chapter in one of the world’s most closely followed celebrity relationships.

The 41-year-old Portuguese football icon and 32-year-old Spanish-Argentine model tied the knot in a private civil ceremony in Cascais, Portugal, on August 11, with their five children reportedly present for the intimate occasion.

The couple confirmed the news through a simple but powerful social media post. Ronaldo shared a photograph showing the couple’s hands together, with their wedding bands clearly visible, alongside the caption “C❤️G”. The understated announcement quickly sent fans around the world into celebration mode.

The wedding comes exactly one year after Rodríguez announced their engagement in August 2025, displaying her striking oval-shaped diamond ring and declaring that she would say “yes” to Ronaldo in this life and every life.

Their love story began in 2016, when Rodríguez was working as a sales assistant at a Gucci store in Madrid. Their relationship soon grew beyond the fashion world, and they made their first major public appearance together at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich in January 2017.

Over the years, the pair built a family life away from Ronaldo’s demanding football career. They share five children: twins Eva Maria and Mateo, daughters Alana and Bella, and Ronaldo’s eldest son, Cristiano Jr.

Their journey has also included profound personal hardship. In 2022, the couple announced the heartbreaking death of Bella’s twin brother, Ángel, shortly after his birth. The tragedy became one of the most difficult moments of their relationship, with the couple supporting each other through the loss.

Now, after years of shared memories, family milestones and public attention, Ronaldo and Rodríguez have officially become husband and wife. For fans who have followed their journey since its early days, the wedding represents the long-awaited finale to a love story that began quietly in a Madrid fashion store and eventually captured global attention.

Millions flock to Spain, Iceland for rare total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse is set to darken skies across parts of Europe on August 12, drawing millions of travellers to witness the rare event. Spain and Iceland have emerged as the top destinations for eclipse chasers this week. This marks the first time the path of totality has crossed mainland Europe since August 1999. The rarity of a total eclipse passing over such densely populated regions has sparked massive international interest. Hundreds of thousands of visitors have been flocking to Spain to experience the celestial event alongside local residents. What makes Spain’s viewing especially unique is that totality will occur just before sunset, with the Sun hanging low on the western horizon. As a result, millions across northern Spain, Zaragoza and the Balearic Islands will witness a dramatic “sunset eclipse”. This will mark the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain in more than a century. Spain’s Secretary of State for Science, Juan Cruz, expressed excitement over the milestone. He said he hopes the event inspires a new generation of astrophysicists, calling it a genuinely special moment for the country. Spanish authorities are preparing for roughly six million visitors travelling across the eclipse’s path. The scale of anticipated tourism reflects just how rare and significant this celestial event is considered. Iceland has also been swept up in the excitement, expecting around 80,000 visitors for the occasion. The path of totality will stretch across western Iceland and eastern Greenland, offering viewers a dramatic backdrop of rugged fjords under late-afternoon Arctic light. Visitors along Iceland’s westernmost coast will experience totality at 5:44 pm local time, as the Moon’s shadow moves steadily eastward. Those in the far western regions will see totality last up to two minutes and 13 seconds, while other areas will experience a shorter period of darkness. NASA is also playing a role in the event, deploying a high-altitude WB-57 aircraft from Iceland to track the Moon’s shadow. Additional NASA-funded teams will launch specialised weather balloons to study how the sudden darkness and cooling affects the lower atmosphere. With millions gathered across two very different landscapes, this eclipse is shaping up to be one of the most significant astronomical events of the decade.

JI launches countrywide protests against inflation

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is holding nationwide demonstrations on Friday against the petroleum levy, rising fuel prices and inflation. The party has announced protests and sit-ins in major cities and districts across the country. Demonstrations are scheduled to begin at 4pm. According to the party, protests will be held along hundreds of major roads and highways in around 170 districts. Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, Peshawar, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi are among the cities where demonstrations have been planned. Several major locations have also been selected for sit-ins. These include Qurtaba Chowk in Lahore, Stop No. 26 in Islamabad, Mian Ghundi Chowk in Quetta and the Toll Plaza in Peshawar. Other protest points include Bosan Road in Multan, the Indus Highway in Karak, CPEC Chowk in Bannu and the Chakdara interchange. JI leaders have warned that the protest campaign could be expanded if authorities attempt to prevent the demonstrations. The party said the number of roads and highways involved could increase significantly. In Karachi, JI leaders said protest caravans would begin moving from several locations at 4pm. These include Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Hub Road, National Highway, Super Highway, Orangi, Korangi, Pakistan Chowk and Sher Shah. The caravans are expected to gather at Mazar-e-Quaid before moving towards Shahrah-e-Faisal. Karachi JI chief Monem Zafar Khan said the demonstrations would continue until the petroleum levy was withdrawn. He said roads along some protest routes could remain closed during the demonstrations. He added that emergency vehicles, including ambulances, would be allowed to pass. JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman had called for the nationwide action a day earlier. In a video message, he urged citizens to join the peaceful demonstrations and asked motorists to park their cars and motorcycles on roads at 4pm. The JI leadership has criticised the government over fuel-related taxes and the rising cost of essential goods. The party says ordinary citizens are facing increasing financial pressure because of higher fuel prices and indirect taxation. Hafiz Naeem also claimed that prices of several food items had increased over the past month. He said motorcycle users and other low-income citizens were particularly affected by higher fuel costs. The JI chief argued that people who do not fall within the formal income-tax system are also paying taxes through fuel levies and other indirect charges. He claimed the government collected around Rs1.9 trillion through the petroleum levy during the past year. The party has warned that further taxation could increase the burden on households if the government does not reconsider its policies. JI leaders are calling on citizens to participate in the protests and press the government to withdraw the petroleum levy
