PTI moves Supreme Court over Imran Khan hospital t…

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has filed a contempt of court petition in the Supreme Court over the hospital transfer of party founder and former prime minister Imran Khan. The petition was filed by PTI lawyers Uzair Bhandari and Salman Akram Raja.

In the petition, PTI has requested the Supreme Court to initiate contempt proceedings over the alleged violation of its August 18, 2026 order. The party has claimed that the court’s directions regarding Imran Khan’s medical treatment and hospital transfer were not properly implemented.

PTI has asked the court to issue show-cause notices to those allegedly responsible for violating the order. It has also requested that the respondents be directed to appear personally before the Supreme Court and explain their position. The party has further sought a declaration that the respondents are guilty of contempt and requested punishment under the law if the alleged violation is established.

The petition also calls for Imran Khan to be immediately transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for a medical examination. PTI has urged the court to ensure that its previous order is fully implemented and has requested the appointment of a judicial officer or local commission to monitor compliance with the court’s directions.

The petition comes after controversy over the implementation of the Supreme Court’s order concerning Imran Khan’s medical treatment. He was expected to be shifted to Shifa International Hospital but was instead taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) before being returned to Adiala Jail.

The development triggered fresh political debate and raised questions within PTI over whether the Supreme Court’s directions had been followed. The party has now sought judicial intervention and legal action against those it believes failed to comply with the order.

English Football to trial new rule to eliminate go…

English football will implement a trial this season aimed at eradicating the increasingly common practice of goalkeepers feigning injury to secure tactical timeouts, with teams required to temporarily remove an outfield player if their keeper receives treatment . The Football Association, Premier League, English Football League, National League, and Women’s Super League have agreed on the measure, with permission granted by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) . The first game to feature the trial will be the Carabao Cup preliminary round tie between Tranmere and Rochdale on Saturday . Under the new protocol, if a referee signals for a physio to treat a goalkeeper, the team’s coach will have 10 seconds to nominate an outfield player to leave the pitch for one minute after play restarts, informing the fourth official of their choice . If no player is selected within 10 seconds, the captain must leave the field . The tactic of goalkeepers going down for treatment allowing coaches to deliver instructions to outfield players gathered on the touchline has become increasingly controversial in recent seasons . Leeds United fans regularly booed opposing goalkeepers for such delays last season, and the practice has been used to disrupt momentum when opponents are on top . Pro Ref, led by chief refereeing officer Howard Webb, had been in discussions with the leagues to address the issue . English football opted for this trial because it follows the logic already applied to outfield players, who must leave the field for one minute if the physio comes on . The measure is intended as a proactive deterrent rather than a reactive punishment . There are several exemptions: no player will have to leave if the goalkeeper says they do not need treatment and have not stopped play, if the goalkeeper and an outfield player have collided, if the goalkeeper is fouled and needs immediate treatment, if the goalkeeper is bleeding, or if there is a serious injury requiring substitution or concussion . Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy had previously suggested this exact solution, saying: “If a keeper goes down injured, instead of him having to go off, one of the outfield players should go off then it’s fair all round. It’s a little change that makes a world of difference.” The Australian A-League will trial a variation where the captain must always leave the field . The results of the trials will be assessed by IFAB throughout the season, potentially leading to a permanent global law change from the 2027-28 season .

Nicole Kidman details her prep behind ‘Lioness’ season 3

Nicole Kidman is opening up about the intense preparation behind her scenes in “Lioness”. She revealed exactly what she and co-star Morgan Freeman make sure to nail down before filming begins. In the CIA thriller series created by Taylor Sheridan, the 59-year-old actress plays Kaitlyn Meade, while 89-year-old Morgan Freeman portrays Edwin Mullins. The show also features an ensemble cast, including Zoe Saldaña, Jill Wagner and Laysla De Oliveira. Speaking at Paramount+’s Icons of Taylor Sheridan’s Universe event, Kidman explained that the work never really stops, even when cameras aren’t rolling. She said the entire cast has to fully understand every single line they deliver. According to her, the scripts are genuinely dense, requiring the cast to work through them carefully for every episode. She described the process as a significant undertaking that demands constant attention. Kidman explained that dialogue has to come out naturally, almost as if it is part of everyday conversation. She admitted that achieving that level of ease takes real effort, since the material itself isn’t something people would normally say casually. She specifically credited her ongoing collaboration with co-stars Michael Kelly and Morgan Freeman. According to Kidman, the three of them are constantly working together behind the scenes to get the material right. She revealed that before filming key scenes, she and Freeman always break down their lines in detail. Kidman said they consistently ask themselves what specific words and phrases actually mean, working through definitions repeatedly. She explained that this process ensures the entire cast stays fully aligned on what they are discussing throughout each scene. According to her, that level of preparation is essential given how technical and layered the show’s dialogue can be. Season three of “Lioness” premiered on Paramount+ on August 2, with new episodes releasing weekly every Sunday. Kidman’s comments offer fans a behind-the-scenes look at just how much preparation goes into delivering the show’s fast-paced, dialogue-heavy storytelling.

Pakistan monsoon death toll hits 110

The death toll from monsoon rains, flash floods and landslides across Pakistan has risen to 110, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The authority said 360 people have been injured in rain-related incidents since June 26. Nearly 800 houses have also been damaged across the country. Most fatalities have been reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, followed by Punjab. Several areas have also faced flooding and damage caused by heavy rainfall. The NDMA briefed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the latest situation. The authority warned that northern parts of the country could face more flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods in the coming weeks. Rapidly melting glaciers have increased the risk in mountainous areas. Authorities have been asked to remain prepared for sudden flooding and other weather-related emergencies. Prime Minister Shehbaz directed officials to use all available resources to protect lives and property. He also stressed the importance of early warning systems and timely emergency measures. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast another strong monsoon spell from July 29. The system is expected to affect Islamabad, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The upper catchment areas of major rivers may also receive heavy rainfall. The weather system is expected to continue until August 5. The weather department has warned of possible urban flooding. Rising water levels in rivers, hill streams and nullahs are also expected in vulnerable areas. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and follow official warnings during the latest spell of rainfall. Meanwhile, the Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 across the province for 60 days. The restrictions ban swimming, bathing and unauthorised boating at various water bodies. Pakistan faces heavy monsoon rainfall every year between late June and September. The season frequently causes flooding, landslides, infrastructure damage and loss of life.

Weekly inflation rises 0.15% in second week of August

ISLAMABAD: Weekly inflation increased by 0.15% during the second week of August 2026, pushing the year-on-year inflation rate to 9.11%, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks changes in the prices of essential consumer goods, showed a mixed trend during the week. Prices of several food and household items increased, while consumers received some relief from lower prices of petroleum products and selected food commodities. According to the PBS report, prices of 20 out of 51 essential commodities increased during the week under review, while prices of nine items declined. The prices of the remaining 22 commodities remained unchanged. Onion prices surge sharply Among the major price increases, onions recorded the most significant weekly jump, becoming 24.68% more expensive compared with the previous week. The increase is likely to add further pressure on household food budgets, particularly for low-income consumers who are more exposed to fluctuations in basic food prices. The price of gram pulse increased by 3.35%, while chicken became 2.45% more expensive during the week. LPG prices also edged up by 0.67%. Other commodities that recorded weekly price increases included tea, mustard oil, yoghurt and masoor pulse, adding to the overall upward movement in the weekly inflation indicator. Petroleum prices provide some relief The weekly inflation reading was partly offset by declines in the prices of petroleum and several food items. Petrol prices decreased by 2.35% during the week, providing some relief to consumers and transport users. Tomato prices fell by 1.26%, while potatoes became 0.73% cheaper. Diesel prices also declined, though marginally, by 0.29%. Prices of bananas, moong pulse, eggs and sugar also recorded weekly decreases. Despite these reductions, the increase in the prices of several essential food items, particularly onions, pulses and chicken, kept overall weekly inflation in positive territory. Food prices remain major source of annual pressure The year-on-year comparison presents a more pronounced picture of price pressures in several essential commodities. Tomatoes recorded the largest annual increase, with prices rising by 143.77% compared with the same period last year. Onion prices were 125.75% higher, while wheat flour became 77.41% more expensive. LPG prices increased by 55.41% on an annual basis, while diesel recorded a 34.05% increase. Petrol prices were also 23.02% higher than a year earlier. The sharp annual increases in basic food items indicate that consumers continue to face significant pressure in meeting everyday household expenses, even though some commodities have become cheaper compared with last year. Several commodities become cheaper annually The annual data also showed declines in the prices of a number of commodities. Potato prices dropped by 30% compared with a year earlier, marking the largest annual decline among the commodities listed in the report. Sugar prices fell by 17.93%, while chicken became 17.45% cheaper on an annual basis. Gram pulse, eggs and moong pulse also recorded year-on-year declines. The contrasting movements highlight the uneven nature of inflation, with some essential commodities witnessing substantial annual increases while others have recorded notable reductions. The latest PBS figures suggest that although overall inflation remains elevated, price movements continue to vary considerably across different categories. Food, energy and other essential commodities remain key factors influencing household expenditure and the broader cost-of-living situation.

NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani puts Shamoon Ismail on his playlist

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is not your average politician, and the playlist he shared with Rolling Stone makes that abundantly clear. In a candid and wide-ranging interview with the magazine, the newly elected mayor opened up about his love of music, name-dropping artists from Uganda, Pakistan and the United States in a conversation that has since generated considerable excitement, particularly in Pakistan. The moment that caught Pakistani audiences off guard was Mamdani’s mention of Shamoon Ismail, the Pakistani rapper and singer who has built a substantial following through his distinctive blend of pop, R&B and Urdu and English lyrics. “I’ve also been listening to a Pakistani rapper named Shamoon Ismail, who I’ve listened to for a few years, but I’m also listening to a little bit more of his music,” Mamdani said. The acknowledgement from the mayor of one of the world’s most powerful cities landed with particular warmth among Pakistani fans, who were clearly delighted to see a homegrown artist reach the playlist of such a prominent international figure. Mamdani was candid about what music means to him beyond casual listening. “It’s part of how I understand the world and how I understand my place in the world,” he said, framing music not as entertainment but as a tool for making sense of life and identity. The interview also offered a window into how his relationship with music began, rooted in the particular atmosphere of early 2000s New York. “I used to love going to Tower Records. They would have just floors of an incredible number of CDs, and for some reason, I loved The Offspring at the time,” he recalled, describing the kind of music discovery that now feels like it belongs to a different era entirely. His memories of finding music in the city carried the texture of street-level New York. “There were three to four albums. The first version I was given was the clean version of Jay-Z’s The Blueprint. The funny thing was that they used to sell bootleg CDs right outside of Tower Records, and that’s where I bought Eiffel 65’s Europop,” he said, the detail of the bootleg seller outside Tower Records painting a vivid picture of the city he grew up in. His Ugandan roots also appeared in his playlist. “I’ve been listening to a lot of Radio & Weasel, who are a duo from Uganda, who were running the charts for a long, long time,” he said. And for quieter, more reflective moments, he reached for country music. “And, you know, if I’m feeling reflective, throw on some Kacey Musgraves,” he added. Mamdani, who is of South Asian and East African descent, became a cultural talking point when he wrapped up his 2025 electoral victory speech to the Bollywood track Dhoom Machale as his family walked onto the stage. That moment went viral and signalled from the very beginning that this was a politician with a different kind of cultural identity from those typically associated with New York’s highest office. In a previous interview, he had also spoken warmly about Indian-American rapper Himanshu Suri, known as Heems, describing him as one of his favourite artists well before he entered politics. For Shamoon Ismail, the mention by a sitting mayor is the kind of international visibility that cannot be manufactured or bought. For Pakistani music more broadly, it is a reminder that the country’s artists are being heard in places and by people that might surprise even their most devoted local fans.
