Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat announced that a specialized selection committee has been established following a cabinet resolution approved on June 12. The committee is composed of an equal representation of six members, including three representatives from the Ministry of Public Health and three from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The application window for prospective candidates officially opened on Tuesday and will remain open until July 17.

Minister Pattana has strongly encouraged qualified individuals to apply for the position, emphasizing the strategic importance of the role in shaping global health policy. He noted that securing the leadership position at the WHO would yield substantial long-term benefits for Thailand’s domestic healthcare development. The government remains steadfast in its commitment to showcasing Thailand’s public health achievements on the international stage and fostering stronger global cooperation to enhance worldwide health security.

The selection committee is expected to announce its chosen candidate in August. Following this domestic selection process, the Thai cabinet will formally endorse the individual as the country’s official nominee for the international post, ensuring the candidate is fully backed by the national government before the global race begins.

The search comes as the WHO prepares for a major leadership transition in the coming year. The current director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of Ethiopia, is scheduled to step down on August 15, 2027, upon the conclusion of his second and final term. Member states of the WHO have until September 24, 2026, to submit their official nominations for the role. The next director-general will ultimately be elected and appointed by the World Health Assembly in May 2027.

    Rain likely in Karachi from today till August 3

    KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Karachi from Saturday afternoon or evening until August 3 as a weather system continues to influence parts of Sindh. According to meteorologists, the intense low-pressure system that had developed over southern Madhya Pradesh has weakened further. It is now located near Rajasthan as a well-marked low-pressure area and is expected to weaken further over the next 24 hours. Despite weakening, the system continues to draw monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into the upper and central parts of Pakistan. At the same time, a westerly weather system is also affecting the country’s northern regions, creating favourable conditions for rainfall in several areas. The Met Office said Karachi is likely to receive rain with thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon or evening through August 3 under the influence of the weather system. Weather experts also forecast intermittent rain accompanied by dust storms and thunderstorms in Tharparkar, Umerkot and Mithi until August 3. Similar weather conditions are expected in Sanghar, Hyderabad and surrounding districts during the same period. The PMD warned that heavy rainfall could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Matiari, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Allahyar. The department also cautioned that heavy rain, strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures. Farmers have been advised to plan their agricultural activities according to the changing weather conditions to avoid potential losses. For Karachi, the Met Office said the sky is expected to remain mostly cloudy during the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature is likely to reach around 36 degrees Celsius. During the past 24 hours, the minimum temperature recorded in the city was 29.5 degrees Celsius.

    KARACHI: A special Freedom Train carrying the colours, traditions and cultural heritage of Sindh departed from Karachi Cantt Station on Thursday, August 14, as the province marked Pakistan’s Independence Day with a journey through the desert landscape of Thar. The train was flagged off by Sindh Culture and Tourism Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah at a ceremony attended by senior officials of Pakistan Railways and representatives of the provincial authorities. The special service has been arranged as a themed version of the Desert Safari Train, combining the traditional railway journey with activities aimed at highlighting Sindh’s rich cultural diversity and the spirit of Independence Day. Pakistan Railways Deputy Divisional Superintendent Operations Hamid Farooq Qureshi, along with other railway officials, was present at the departure ceremony. Officials said the initiative was designed to bring the Independence Day celebrations to different parts of the province while showcasing the cultural identity of Sindh. After departing from Karachi, the train is scheduled to reach Thar on Thursday evening. During its stay in the desert region, the Freedom Train will participate in Independence Day events at several locations, including Zero Point, a prominent site near the Pakistan-India border. The celebrations will feature the province’s distinctive cultural traditions and are expected to provide residents and visitors with an opportunity to participate in festivities in the unique setting of the Thar desert.     KBO cancels games amid heatwave warning

    South Korea’s Korea Baseball Organisation (KBO) has cancelled two scheduled league games after authorities issued the highest level of heatwave warning for parts of the country. The decision was taken to protect the health and safety of players, spectators and match officials as temperatures were forecast to reach 39°C. According to the league, the severe heat warning has been in effect since Friday in the cities of Busan and Changwon, where Saturday’s games were due to be played. With dangerously high temperatures expected to continue, the KBO opted to postpone the fixtures rather than risk the well-being of everyone involved. The two affected matches are: • Samsung Lions vs Lotte Giants at Sajik Baseball Stadium in Busan. • KIA Tigers vs NC Dinos at Changwon NC Park in Changwon, South Gyeongsang. Confirming the decision, the KBO said: “Severe heatwave warnings have been in effect for the Changwon and Busan areas since yesterday.” The league further explained the reason behind the postponements, stating: “The decision was made with the safety and health of spectators and players as the top priority.” It also confirmed that both games will be rescheduled at a later date. Under KBO regulations, a heatwave warning may be declared when daily maximum temperatures of at least 35°C are forecast to continue for two consecutive days or longer. Once such conditions exist, the league is permitted to postpone games or introduce other safety measures to minimise the impact of extreme weather. Apart from outright cancellations, the KBO also has the option of delaying outdoor matches by up to one hour. Such decisions are made after consultations between the league’s game operations officials and each club’s game manager. The rule applies to all outdoor stadiums across the league. The only exception is Gocheok Sky Dome in western Seoul. Because it is a fully roofed stadium, games scheduled there can continue without being affected by extreme heat or other weather conditions. The Korea Baseball Organisation has increasingly focused on player and fan welfare in recent years, especially during periods of severe summer weather. South Korea has experienced unusually high temperatures this season, prompting authorities to issue multiple heat-related warnings and advise residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activities whenever possible. Founded in 1982, the KBO League is South Korea’s premier professional baseball competition and consists of 10 teams owned by major corporate groups. It remains the country’s most popular spectator sport, featuring a 144-game regular season that attracts millions of fans every year. Among its most successful clubs are the KIA Tigers, who have captured 12 championships, the highest total in league history. Despite the disruption caused by the heatwave, league officials have assured fans that the postponed fixtures will be added to the schedule later in the season, with safety continuing to remain the KBO’s highest priority as extreme weather conditions persist across parts of South Korea.
