JI seeks Rs1 billion damages from former FBR chief

KARACHI: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has served a legal notice on former Federal Board of Revenue chairman Shabbar Zaidi. The party is seeking Rs1 billion in damages over remarks it says harmed its reputation.

The notice relates to allegations made by Zaidi about the political party and its role in public protests. JI said the former FBR chief made the remarks during a podcast and later repeated them on different social media platforms.

According to the party, the notice was issued on July 27 through Advocate Tahir Iqbal Malik. It was sent on the instructions of JI Karachi General Secretary Taufiquddin Siddiqui.

JI has accused Zaidi of making serious and damaging claims. The party says the allegations suggested that it had received money to weaken or suppress public protests and political issues.

The party also objected to comments in which Zaidi allegedly described JI as an “establishment firewall”. According to JI, the remarks created an impression that the party was working to dilute public concerns and protests.

The legal notice claims that the statements included allegations of secret funding, bribery, corruption and political misconduct. It also alleges that the remarks suggested coordination between the party and state institutions.

JI has demanded that Zaidi provide evidence to support his claims. The party has asked him to identify the person who allegedly made the payment and the individual who supposedly received it.

The notice also seeks details about the alleged amount, including when and where the payment was made. JI has asked for information about the method of payment and any bank records or financial documents linked to the allegation.

The party has further demanded evidence concerning the alleged protest or public issue. It has asked for the names of witnesses and any documents, recordings or other material that could support the claims.

JI also wants Zaidi to disclose the source of the information on which his allegations were based. The party has said the claims should be backed by verifiable evidence.

When approached for a response, Zaidi said he had forwarded the legal notice to his lawyer. He said he would seek legal advice on the matter.

The dispute could now move into a legal phase if the former FBR chairman does not respond to the notice in the manner demanded by the party.

Indian celebrities voice support for Cockroach Janta Party protests

A growing number of prominent Indian celebrities and public figures have publicly voiced their solidarity with the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests, amplifying the movement’s demands for educational reform, transparency, and youth empowerment. What began as a viral, satirical social media campaign addressing systemic issues like exam irregularities and widespread unemployment has rapidly evolved into a major political and cultural phenomenon across the nation. In recent days, several high-profile figures from the entertainment industry have used their platforms to condemn the harsh government response to peaceful student demonstrators at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Actor Sonu Sood called for compassion and understanding from authorities, emphasizing that young students require supportive hands rather than force. Meanwhile, actor and comedian Vir Das urged fellow artists and performers not to remain silent, highlighting the hypocrisy of relying on young audiences for ticket sales while failing to stand up for their rights during moments of crisis. Joining the chorus of support, actor Dia Mirza strongly criticized the use of police force against peaceful marchers, expressing her distress over reports of harsh measures used against students and citizens demanding accountability. Actors Aditi Rao Hydari and Soha Ali Khan also shared messages advocating for constructive dialogue, dignity, and the fundamental right to peaceful protest, framing the issue as an urgent matter of human welfare and youth rights rather than partisan politics. Veteran actor Prakash Raj went a step further by physically joining demonstrators on the ground in Delhi, addressing crowds alongside activists and waving the Indian Constitution to demand accountability from political leadership. Raj openly challenged the broader film industry’s hesitation to speak up, noting that public judgment will fall on those who choose to remain silent during critical moments of youth struggle. The CJP movement—initially launched by digital activist Abhijeet Dipke—has resonated deeply with millions of young Indians frustrated by entrance exam scandals, job scarcity, and administrative indifference. Despite facing account suspensions, digital censorship, and heavy security measures at protest sites, the movement continues to build significant momentum both online and in public spaces. With influential cultural figures now lending their voices to the cause, the student-driven agitation has successfully pushed youth issues to the center of national debate.

Eight-year-old girl allegedly raped in Gujranwala, public outraged

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to a brutal sexual assault by unidentified perpetrators in the Gujranwala area, triggering widespread grief and anger across Pakistan. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of children and the growing number of violent crimes being reported across the country. According to reports, the incident took place in Feroze Wala Kala Khatai Gol Pind near Gujranwala. The minor was allegedly taken to nearby fields, where she was sexually assaulted by multiple suspects. Her cries for help alerted local residents, who rushed towards the area and intervened. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify and arrest those responsible. The victim was later taken to a police station in critical condition. Reports said that she was in severe distress and was unable to sit comfortably following the alleged assault. The incident has also sparked criticism of the media after the child’s father appeared before news outlets while attempting to conceal his daughter’s face. Despite the family’s efforts to protect the minor’s identity, reports claimed that some media channels broadcast footage showing the child’s face without blurring it. The decision has drawn condemnation from members of the public and celebrities, who argued that protecting the privacy and dignity of a minor victim should be a basic responsibility of the media. Actress Amar Khan expressed her anger over the alleged assault as well as the media’s handling of the victim’s identity. She criticised the decision to broadcast the child’s unblurred face, calling attention to the ethical responsibilities of news organisations when reporting cases involving minors. Maya Khan also reacted emotionally to the incident, urging people to take action against such cruelty. She wrote, “Please do something before Allah reacts to this cruelty and punishes us.” Malik Aqeel was also among those who expressed grief over the disturbing case. The incident has prompted another wave of public outrage on social media, with many users demanding strict action against those responsible. Several commentators questioned whether parents can feel safe raising daughters when children continue to face such horrific violence. Some users called for stronger punishments for perpetrators of crimes against children, while others expressed frustration over what they described as repeated failures to protect vulnerable minors. Many social media users also tagged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, urging authorities to ensure a swift investigation and bring the suspects to justice. The alleged assault comes amid growing public concern over reports of rape, murder, kidnapping and other violent crimes across Pakistan. Recent cases involving children and other vulnerable victims have intensified demands for stronger law enforcement, better protection for minors and greater accountability. As the investigation continues, the public is awaiting concrete action against those responsible for the Gujranwala incident. The case has once again highlighted the urgent need to protect children from violence and ensure that victims are treated with dignity and privacy throughout the legal process.
