Dar targets $20bn Pakistan-US trade

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has expressed confidence that Pakistan and the United States can increase bilateral trade in goods to $20 billion within the next five years.

Dar said Pakistan’s trade in goods with the US stood at $9.4 billion during the last fiscal year. He described the US as Pakistan’s largest single-country export market.

Addressing a US Congressional Delegation and American business representatives, Dar said stronger trade and investment ties could create new opportunities for companies in both countries.

He said closer economic cooperation could also generate employment, encourage innovation and support long-term economic growth.

Dar highlighted several areas where Pakistan and the US could expand commercial cooperation. These include information technology, artificial intelligence, energy, manufacturing, agriculture and critical minerals.

He said Pakistan is already an important buyer of American cotton and soybeans. The country is also becoming a growing market for US hydrocarbons.

At the same time, Pakistan’s increasing demand for advanced machinery, technology and capital goods could create opportunities for American manufacturers, he added.

Dar said the presence of more than 80 US companies in Pakistan demonstrated growing confidence in the country’s market and economic potential.

He welcomed the interest shown by American companies in Pakistan’s technology, energy, critical minerals and defence sectors.

The foreign minister also pointed to the US Exim Bank’s $1.25 billion financing for the Reko Diq project as an indication of increasing US confidence in Pakistan’s investment prospects.

Dar encouraged American businesses to establish partnerships with Pakistani companies and explore long-term investment opportunities.

He said Pakistan had improved its infrastructure over the past decade through modern highways, ports and logistics networks. These developments, he added, had strengthened the country’s position as a potential trade and investment gateway.

The government is also working to make the business environment more investor-friendly. Dar said regulatory procedures had been simplified to reduce bureaucratic delays and make licensing and approvals easier.

He said Pakistan wanted to deepen cooperation with the US across both goods and services. Technology, AI, energy, manufacturing, critical minerals and agriculture were among the sectors identified for greater collaboration.

Dar also highlighted the broader improvement in Pakistan-US relations. He said frequent high-level contacts under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and US President Donald Trump had helped strengthen bilateral engagement.

He said his meetings with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also focused on strengthening relations and discussing regional developments.

The foreign minister stressed that parliamentary engagement was equally important. He said regular interaction between lawmakers could improve mutual understanding and strengthen institutional ties.

Dar said Pakistan’s engagement with the US Congress had increased significantly over the past year. The interaction has included lawmakers from both political parties and key congressional committees.

The two countries also discussed regional security and stability. Dar said stronger Pakistan-US relations could contribute to peace and stability in the wider region.

He also recalled Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the US and Iran. Dar said Islamabad remained committed to dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful solutions to regional disputes.

The foreign minister separately received a US congressional delegation comprising Representatives Ryan Zinke and Michael James Baumgartner.

During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to expand cooperation in trade, investment, IT, energy and other areas.

The US lawmakers acknowledged the contribution of the Pakistani community to American society and economy. They described the diaspora as an important link between the two countries.

Pakistan unveils major construction reforms to boo…

ISLAMABAD: The federal government is preparing a wide-ranging reform package aimed at revitalising Pakistan’s construction industry, improving regulatory oversight and attracting greater investment in modern infrastructure. The proposed measures include the establishment of a Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), consideration of a specialised Construction Development Bank (CDB), targeted tax reforms and changes to import and export policies. The proposals were discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Establishment Division Senator Ahad Khan Cheema. The meeting brought together senior government officials, representatives of the Construction Association of Pakistan and other stakeholders to examine the sector’s financial, regulatory and operational challenges. Under the proposed framework, the CIDB would promote the development of the construction industry while also regulating contractors, consultants and industry standards. The body would include representatives from both the public and private sectors and would seek to establish more consistent construction standards across the country. Senator Cheema said the government and the Construction Association of Pakistan were in agreement over the need for a dedicated regulatory and development body. The proposed framework will be presented to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for approval. The government also plans to introduce targeted tax incentives and rationalise import and export policies to encourage the use of modern construction technologies and strengthen local production capacity. In a significant move to improve the quality and durability of public infrastructure, the standard Defect Liability Period for public development projects is expected to increase from one year to three years, with a longer-term plan to extend it to five years. The proposed reforms would also increase accountability for consultants. Unlike contractors, who can face penalties for poor performance, consultants currently have limited direct legal accountability. Under the new framework, consultants could be subjected to regulatory oversight and held financially and legally responsible for design defects and technical errors. The government is also examining the construction industry’s difficulties in obtaining financial and performance guarantees. Senator Cheema directed Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani to consult the State Bank of Pakistan and Pakistan Banks Association on these issues and assess the feasibility of establishing a dedicated Construction Development Bank. The government says the reforms are intended to ensure that public infrastructure projects deliver better value for money, remain durable and meet higher technical standards. Officials believe stronger regulation and accountability could reduce disputes, improve construction quality and bring Pakistan’s industry closer to international standards.

AJK polling underway at 23 atations in Bagh

BAGH: Voting is underway at 23 polling stations across two constituencies in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s (AJK) Bagh district, in a closely watched exercise following disputes and allegations of irregularities during the region’s phased elections. Polling began at 8am on Saturday and is scheduled to continue until 5pm, with authorities deploying additional security personnel to ensure voters can cast their ballots without fear or disruption. The polling is being held in LA-15 (Bagh Central) and LA-16 (Eastern Bagh), where voting could not take place at several stations during the third phase of the elections earlier this week. The AJK Election Commission subsequently withheld the results of both constituencies and ordered polling at the remaining stations. In LA-15, PPP candidate Sardar Ziaul Qamar had secured 16,637 votes in the stations where polling was held, followed by PML-N’s Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas with 15,015 votes. Jamaat-i-Islami candidate retired Brig Dr Muhammad Khan stood third with 12,259 votes. Meanwhile, the withheld result in LA-16 involves 14 polling stations with 7,238 registered voters. Results from the remaining stations had placed PML-N’s Sardar Mir Akbar in front with 19,515 votes, giving him a lead of 3,225 votes over PPP’s Sardar Qamaruz Zaman. The contest has remained tense, with candidates from all five parties accusing their rivals of large-scale rigging. Election authorities, however, have stressed that adequate security has been arranged. AJK Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal said sufficient police and law-enforcement personnel had been deployed at polling stations to provide voters with a “fear-free environment”. The latest polling is part of an election process conducted in phases amid unrest and law-and-order concerns across the region. The third phase was initially planned for all 11 constituencies of Poonch Division but was limited to Bagh and Haveli districts after security concerns emerged. The Election Commission has already announced the result for LA-14 (Bagh-I), where Jammu Kashmir Awami Dast-o-Bazu Party candidate Sajid Iqbal Abbasi won by a substantial margin. The election in neighbouring LA-17 (Haveli), however, has become the subject of a separate dispute after AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore was declared the winner. His PML-N rival, Engineer Mohsin Aziz, challenged the result, prompting the Election Commission to hear arguments from both sides. With voting now underway at the remaining 23 stations, attention is focused on turnout, security and whether the fresh polling will finally settle the disputed contests in Bagh.
