Diplomatic storm erupts over podcast banter involving Japanese prime minister

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing intense political backlash after a podcast appearance triggered a high-profile diplomatic row with Tokyo.

The controversy stems from an episode, recorded in July, in which Albanese discussed a pair of prized crown melons presented to him during a May bilateral meeting by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. During the segment, podcast host Nikki Osborne made an explicit joke comparing the fruit to female anatomy, to which Albanese responded with agreement.

The exchange went largely unnoticed upon release but reignited publicly after Shingo Yamagami, Japan’s former ambassador to Australia, published a scathing opinion piece accusing the Australian leader of casually mocking a key strategic ally.

Yamagami described the remarks as a sexist insult that betrayed the close diplomatic bond between the two nations, noting that crown melons are highly valued cultural gifts in Japan, often worth upwards of 30,000 yen (£150) each.

Opposition leaders in Canberra immediately seized on the commentary, demanding an official apology from Albanese for what they termed “classless” and disrespectful conduct.

Albanese rejected calls to apologise in parliament, insisting that the partnership between Australia and Japan remains as strong as ever and pointing out that the joke was initiated by the host rather than himself.

Senior Labor Party ministers also defended the prime minister, arguing that the comments were taken out of context by political opponents and former diplomats. The episode marks the second time Albanese has faced criticism over his appearance on the show, following a prior apology for crude remarks regarding pop star Kylie Minogue.

Trump jokes about Leavitt choosing her children over him as she Prepares to leave White House role

US President Donald Trump has reacted to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s decision to leave her position with a light-hearted remark about her choice to spend more time with her young children. During an interview correspondent Alexis McAdams, Trump was asked about the possibility of finding a replacement for Leavitt. The president spoke positively about her work and described her performance as highly successful. Trump praised Leavitt for doing a “great job” as press secretary but then made a joke about her priorities. He said he was “very concerned” after learning that Leavitt apparently liked spending time with her children more than being around him. The comment was made in a humorous tone, but it quickly attracted attention because Leavitt’s decision to leave the White House is closely connected to her family responsibilities. Leavitt announced last week that she planned to step down from the position at the end of August. She explained that her decision was motivated by a desire to dedicate more time to her young family. Her departure marks a significant change for the White House communications team. As press secretary, Leavitt has been one of the administration’s most visible representatives, regularly appearing before reporters and defending the president’s policies. Trump has repeatedly praised Leavitt and described her as one of the strongest press secretaries he has worked with. Although she is leaving her official position, Trump has indicated that he wants her to remain connected to his administration. According to the president, Leavitt will continue to contribute as an outside adviser after stepping down. This would allow her to maintain a relationship with the administration while giving her greater flexibility to focus on her family. During the same interview, Trump also appeared to raise the possibility of Alexis McAdams becoming Leavitt’s successor. Addressing the Fox News correspondent directly, he asked whether she would be interested in taking over the White House briefing room podium. McAdams has experience covering the Trump administration and frequently reports on political developments. Trump’s question therefore prompted speculation about whether she could be considered for the position, although it was not clear whether his comments represented a serious proposal or another informal remark during the interview. The exchange quickly spread across social media and generated mixed reactions. Some viewers interpreted Trump’s comments about Leavitt as typical of his joking and informal style. Supporters viewed the remark as a humorous way of acknowledging the importance of family in Leavitt’s decision. Others, however, were critical of the joke. They argued that Leavitt’s choice to step away from one of the most demanding political communications jobs in Washington in order to spend more time with her children should be treated seriously rather than used as the subject of a public punchline. Leavitt’s departure also highlights the challenges faced by high-profile officials who attempt to balance demanding political careers with family life. The White House press secretary position requires frequent public appearances, media briefings, travel and long working hours, making it particularly demanding for anyone with young children. Despite the joking tone of Trump’s comments, his praise for Leavitt made clear that he considers her contribution to the administration valuable. His decision to retain her as an outside adviser suggests that he wants to continue benefiting from her experience and communication skills. The White House is now expected to determine who will take over the daily briefing role once Leavitt leaves at the end of August. Until then, attention will remain focused on her final weeks as press secretary and on who may eventually step behind the White House briefing room podium.

In that emotional post, Johar remembered one of his earliest conversations with Shah Rukh during a trip to Switzerland. He wrote: “Switzerland … I was looking at the mountains (pretending to be homesick and seeking sympathy). He came to me and said Tu director banega aur teri pehli film main karoonga.’ (You will become a director and I will do your first film). I thought to myself… he’s probably low on oxygen and may not completely know what he’s saying.” Johar went on to thank Shah Rukh for always believing in him as a filmmaker, referring to the superstar as his “guru.” Their friendship has produced several successful films over the years, making them one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actor-director partnerships. Professionally, both stars have busy schedules ahead. Karan Johar is preparing to return as host of the second season of The Traitors, which is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on August 13. Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan is gearing up for one of the biggest projects of his career, King, in which he will share the screen with his daughter Suhana Khan for the first time. Although neither Shah Rukh Khan nor Karan Johar has revealed what their Friendship Day teaser is actually about, the cryptic post has already generated widespread excitement, with fans eagerly awaiting an official announcement from the iconic duo.

US imposes tariffs and price floors on Chinese-dominated polysilicon supply chain

US President Donald Trump has signed a executive proclamation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, introducing a 15 per cent tariff and minimum import price floors on products made from polysilicon. The critical raw material forms the foundational supply chain for both semiconductor chips and solar panels, a sector currently dominated by Chinese manufacturing. The executive action establishes clear import price thresholds across key processing stages. Under the new policy, raw polysilicon is set at a minimum price floor of $21 per kilogram, while polysilicon ingots and wafers are capped at a floor of $100 per kilogram. Solar cells face a minimum price of $0.22 per watt, and finished solar modules or panels carry a minimum threshold of $0.38 per watt. The order also directs the Commerce Department to establish targeted incentive programs for domestic companies investing in polysilicon production facilities. While semiconductor manufacturing accounts for roughly 2.4 per cent of global polysilicon demand, the material’s economic viability depends directly on the volume scale maintained by solar manufacturing. US solar manufacturers and polysilicon producers, including Corning, Hemlock Semiconductor, Wacker Chemie, First Solar, and Qcells, welcomed the strategic protections as essential for safeguarding domestic supply chains necessary for advanced computing and renewable energy. The new trade protections take effect on 4 December 2026, granting buyers a four-month window to adjust existing supply contracts before the higher price thresholds apply.

    Who is Epstein’s potential heir?

Attention has shifted to Karyna Shuliak, the longtime girlfriend of convicted sex offender and disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein. The development comes years after Epstein died in a federal prison in 2019. His death brought an end to his criminal case but left behind a complicated estate and several legal disputes. Shuliak is now being described as a potential major beneficiary of Epstein’s remaining wealth. According to court documents, Epstein signed a new will just two days before his death. The document created a private trust known as the 1953 Trust. Recent court records reportedly show that Shuliak was included among the important beneficiaries of the trust. However, the exact amount she could receive remains uncertain. US Department of Justice records reportedly indicate that Shuliak was the last person Epstein spoke to outside prison before his death. Reports also say that Epstein made some of his final telephone calls to her while he was in custody. At the time of his death, Epstein’s estate was estimated to be worth around $600 million. A significant portion of that wealth has since been used to compensate people who accused Epstein of sexual abuse. More than $170 million was reportedly paid to over 200 victims through compensation arrangements. The estate has also faced several legal claims and settlements with government authorities. These matters have complicated the distribution of Epstein’s remaining assets. After a recent tax refund, the value of the estate’s remaining assets is estimated at between $120 million and $150 million. Despite being named as a potential beneficiary, Shuliak has not yet secured the inheritance. Payments connected to the trust remain suspended while legal proceedings continue. Richard Kahn, the executor of Epstein’s estate, has reportedly raised concerns about the wording of the trust agreement. He described the document as unclear and poorly prepared. The uncertainty has made it difficult to determine exactly how Epstein intended his remaining fortune to be divided. Legal experts say Shuliak’s potential inheritance cannot be confirmed until outstanding claims and court proceedings are resolved.

In an official statement issued on Thursday, the PCB said Hamza Nazar has been barred from participating in all domestic and international cricket activities for the duration of the suspension. The board added that the player was given a full opportunity to present his explanation before the committee reached its decision.
