The blaze, described as “very violent,” broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time inside the Constellation bar, which was hosting a New Year’s Eve celebration. Frederic Gisler, commander of the Valais Cantonal Police, confirmed the grim toll at a press conference, stating, “There have been about a hundred injured who have been evacuated to different hospitals, and dozens of them may have died.”

Authorities have ruled out a terrorist attack or intentional act but urged the public to avoid speculation out of respect for the victims’ families. “It is too early” to determine the cause of the fire, officials stated, adding that there was no initial evidence of an explosion triggering the blaze.

One leading hypothesis under investigation is an accident involving pyrotechnics. Despite posted warnings from local authorities banning fireworks for New Year’s celebrations, witness accounts in local media suggest the fire may have started with “a flare placed in a champagne bottle.” The flames reportedly ignited the wooden ceiling of the basement and spread with extreme speed.

Over 100 people were inside the venue at the time of the incident. A massive emergency response was deployed, including cantonal police, firefighters, and several helicopters. By early morning, the situation was declared under control, though the area remains cordoned off for investigation.

Given the international appeal of the Crans-Montana resort, Valais Chief Public Prosecutor Béatrice Pilloud noted it is likely that victims are of various nationalities. The Constellation bar is known as a frequent hotspot for tourists.

The plan had sparked strong criticism from UEFA, which argued that football’s global competitions should not be treated as commercial assets. Before the proposal was abandoned, UEFA had firmly opposed the idea, stating: “Football is not FIFA’s to sell.” Following FIFA’s decision to withdraw the proposal, UEFA issued another strongly worded statement welcoming the outcome while criticising Infantino’s leadership. The statement read: “The current FIFA leadership has not only lost UEFA’s confidence but also that of many other members of the football family.” UEFA also reminded members of the promises Infantino made when he first sought election as FIFA president in 2016. Quoting his campaign pledge, the organisation said: “When Gianni Infantino asked for the trust and the votes of FIFA’s member associations to elect him as their president in 2016, he said: ‘Of course we have to be transparent.’” The European governing body accused Infantino of failing to live up to that commitment, claiming he had handled FIFA’s finances without sufficient transparency and had treated the organisation’s money as though it belonged to him personally. The controversy began on July 29, when Infantino reportedly offered each of FIFA’s 211 member associations$40 million in exchange for supporting a proposal that would allow private investment in FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. UEFA responded swiftly by announcing it would boycott future World Cups if the proposal moved forward. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also declared that it “stands in solidarity” with UEFA and Concacaf, adding further pressure on FIFA to reconsider the plan. The criticism did not stop there. FIFA chief operating officer Kevin Lamour reportedly admitted that the organisation’s own administration had been “deceived” about the investment project. Meanwhile, FIFA senior adviser on global strategy and governance Carlos Cordeiro resigned over the proposal, describing it as: “A bad deal for football” He also warned that it would: “Mortgage football’s future.” The episode has created fresh uncertainty around Infantino’s leadership ahead of FIFA’s next presidential election. Infantino, who was first elected FIFA president in 2016 after defeating AFC president Sheikh Salman al-Khalifa by 115 votes to 88, is expected to seek another term.     AJK election polling ends, counting underway

    Polling for the second phase of the 2026 general elections to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly concluded on Sunday, with vote counting now underway across the contested constituencies. The election was held for eight constituencies in the Muzaffarabad Division and 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees residing in different cities of Pakistan. Polling in LA-27 Muzaffarabad was postponed due to bad weather and landslides, while clashes in LA-31 left a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) worker dead. In Khawra, Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Salahuddin Junejo and two party workers were injured in a firing incident. Voting began at 8:00 a.m. and was originally scheduled to end at 5:00 p.m. However, the AJK Election Commission extended polling by one hour in the Muzaffarabad Division due to a high voter turnout, allowing voters to cast their ballots until 6:00 p.m. More than 1.2 million registered voters were eligible to vote in the second phase of the elections. A total of 208 candidates contested nine constituencies in the Muzaffarabad Division, which has 809,621 registered voters, while 143 candidates competed for the 12 refugee seats. Authorities established 1,483 polling stations across the Muzaffarabad region, with heavy security deployed at highly sensitive locations. Polling Postponed in LA-27 Although elections were scheduled in nine constituencies of Muzaffarabad Division, polling was held in only eight. The Election Commission postponed voting in LA-27 Muzaffarabad-II (Lachhrat) after severe weather and landslides disrupted access to several polling stations. Fresh polling in the constituency has been scheduled for August 4. Voting in some constituencies began late, while the PPP accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of electoral irregularities. The party’s election cell submitted formal complaints to the Chief Election Commissioner. Clashes and Violence A PPP worker, identified as Mushtaq Shah, was killed during clashes in LA-31. In Khawra, PPP MNA Salahuddin Junejo, who represents NA-210 Sanghar-II, suffered a gunshot wound to his arm during a firing incident. Two party workers were also injured and all three were shifted to hospital for treatment. In LA-29 (Muzaffarabad-III), polling was temporarily suspended after clashes erupted between supporters of the PML-N and the PPP. In LA-43 (Rawalpindi Valley-IV), PPP candidate Javed Butt reportedly entered the Millat Colony polling station accompanied by an armed guard. According to reports, the guard was not stopped by police personnel. Security and Key Contests Constituencies LA-28, LA-29, and LA-31 were declared highly sensitive due to security concerns. Closely watched contests included prominent political figures such as Shah Ghulam Qadir of the PML-N, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), former Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider, and AJK Legislative Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar. In the Rawalpindi Division, 35 candidates contested three refugee seats, representing 27,907 registered voters. Voting also took place in Karachi for two refugee constituencies representing Kashmir and Jammu. For security, around 4,000 police personnel were deployed. Out of 175 polling stations, 31 were declared sensitive. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 41 polling stations were established across 21 districts for LA-45 Kashmir Valley-VI, where 7,655 registered voters were eligible to cast their ballots.

    Petroleum Levy collection hits record Rs1.57 trill…

    Pakistan’s petroleum levy collection reached a record Rs1.567 trillion during the fiscal year 2025-26, exceeding both the government’s target and the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) projection, according to sources. The government also collected an additional Rs50.16 billion as Climate Support Levy during the fiscal year, adding further revenue from petroleum products. Sources said petroleum levy collections increased by Rs347.24 billion compared with the previous fiscal year. The total collection stood nearly Rs100 billion above the government’s target of Rs1.468 trillion for FY2025-26. The collection also surpassed the IMF’s estimate. The global lender had projected petroleum levy revenues of around Rs1.546 trillion for the fiscal year, meaning the actual collection exceeded the projection by approximately Rs21 billion. Petroleum levy revenues have continued to rise sharply in recent years. The government collected Rs1.220 trillion in FY2024-25, compared with Rs1.019 trillion in FY2023-24. In FY2022-23, petroleum levy collection stood at around Rs580 billion. The latest figures reflect the government’s growing reliance on petroleum-related revenues to strengthen its fiscal position and meet revenue requirements under its economic programme. At present, the government charges a petroleum levy of Rs80 per litre on petrol, while high-speed diesel carries a levy of Rs77.28 per litre. In addition, the government imposes a separate Climate Support Levy of Rs5 per litre each on petrol and diesel. The record collection comes as the government continues to seek higher revenues while managing fiscal pressures and meeting commitments under its agreement with the IMF. The increased levy revenue provides additional funds for the federal budget but also adds to the overall cost burden on consumers through petroleum prices.

    KARACHI: In a significant step towards improving cancer care in Pakistan, the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has established a state-of-the-art Breast Radiation Bay that promises faster, safer and completely free treatment for breast cancer patients. The new facility is expected to transform care for thousands of women by reducing treatment time while improving precision and patient safety. Named the Bilquis and Abdul Sattar Edhi Breast Radiation Bay, the project has been developed through a joint collaboration between the Sindh government, the Patient Aid Foundation and the Edhi Foundation. Equipped with advanced tomotherapy technology worth more than Rs1 billion, the facility is in its final stages of completion and is expected to begin serving patients soon. According to Prof. Tariq Mahmood, head of the CyberKnife Department at JPMC, the cutting-edge technology will dramatically shorten the duration of treatment. Radiation therapy that previously required 20 to 22 sessions can now be completed in just five sessions, reducing the physical and emotional burden on patients. He explained that the new system delivers radiation with exceptional accuracy, targeting cancerous tissues while protecting healthy organs, particularly the heart. This precision is expected to improve treatment outcomes and reduce the risk of side effects, making cancer care both safer and more effective. The Breast Radiation Bay will have the capacity to treat around 160 breast cancer patients every day, providing life-saving care to thousands annually. In addition to advanced radiotherapy, the centre will offer a complete range of diagnostic services, including mammography, biopsy, high-resolution CT imaging, and 360-degree helical radiation therapy, allowing patients to receive comprehensive care under one roof. Medical experts say breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Pakistan, with Karachi reporting one of the country’s highest incidence rates. They stress that early detection through regular screening greatly increases the chances of successful treatment. Doctors also urge women to seek immediate medical advice if they notice warning signs such as breast lumps, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple discharge or changes in nipple appearance. While these symptoms do not always indicate cancer, timely evaluation is essential. Health specialists believe the new facility marks a major milestone in Pakistan’s fight against breast cancer by expanding access to world-class treatment regardless of a patient’s financial circumstances. With advanced technology, free care and greater diagnostic capacity, JPMC aims to give thousands of women a better chance at early recovery and long-term survival.
