Dozens Dead, Scores Injured in Fire at Swiss Ski Resort Nightclub

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland — A devastating fire ripped through a nightclub at the popular Crans-Montana ski resort in the early hours of Thursday, leaving dozens dead and around a hundred injured, according to Swiss police.

The blaze, described as “very violent,” broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time inside the Constellation bar, which was hosting a New Year’s Eve celebration. Frederic Gisler, commander of the Valais Cantonal Police, confirmed the grim toll at a press conference, stating, “There have been about a hundred injured who have been evacuated to different hospitals, and dozens of them may have died.”

Authorities have ruled out a terrorist attack or intentional act but urged the public to avoid speculation out of respect for the victims’ families. “It is too early” to determine the cause of the fire, officials stated, adding that there was no initial evidence of an explosion triggering the blaze.

One leading hypothesis under investigation is an accident involving pyrotechnics. Despite posted warnings from local authorities banning fireworks for New Year’s celebrations, witness accounts in local media suggest the fire may have started with “a flare placed in a champagne bottle.” The flames reportedly ignited the wooden ceiling of the basement and spread with extreme speed.

Over 100 people were inside the venue at the time of the incident. A massive emergency response was deployed, including cantonal police, firefighters, and several helicopters. By early morning, the situation was declared under control, though the area remains cordoned off for investigation.

Given the international appeal of the Crans-Montana resort, Valais Chief Public Prosecutor Béatrice Pilloud noted it is likely that victims are of various nationalities. The Constellation bar is known as a frequent hotspot for tourists.

Trump Media charges traders up to $100,000 monthly…

More than ten firms have signed on to pay for Trump Media’s newly launched service that grants faster access to market moving posts published on its Truth Social platform, the company disclosed during an earnings call this week. The service, called Truth API, went live at the start of August and gives Wall Street traders early visibility into posts from the platform’s most influential accounts before the general public sees them. Interim chief executive Kevin McGurn said the earliest subscribers are largely high frequency trading firms, which pay between $60,000 and $100,000 a month for the access. McGurn detailed the pricing during a call held after Trump Media reported a net loss of $238 million for the April through June quarter, a figure more than ten times larger than the loss the company posted during the same period a year earlier. The steep quarterly loss comes as Trump Media and Technology Group has expanded into ventures far removed from its original media business, including cryptocurrency holdings. Despite still operating at a loss overall, the company says it intends to refocus on its core social media mission going forward. In July, the firm unveiled plans to offer Wall Street firms and institutional investors expedited access to posts on Truth Social, a platform where President Trump regularly shares public announcements. Critics have described the arrangement as a potential edge for subscribers looking to trade stocks and other actively traded assets ahead of market moving news. The initiative has also raised legal and ethical questions, particularly around the fact that a company in which the president’s family holds a majority stake could financially benefit from his own public statements reaching paying subscribers faster than the general public. In its earnings statement released Monday, Trump Media described the new offering as a service expected to generate a new revenue stream for the company. McGurn said executives believe the product will grow into a meaningful and durable source of income alongside the company’s broader media strategy, which already includes advertising and digital asset ventures. He added that Truth Media is also exploring potential partnerships with technology companies, news organizations and betting markets. The company reported revenue of $1.7 million for the quarter, an 89 percent increase compared with the same period last year, though the overall loss stemmed largely from declining cryptocurrency values. Trump Media said it closed the quarter holding total assets of $2 billion, including roughly $1.9 billion in financial assets made up of cash, short term investments and digital currencies. The firm continues to expand into new territory, including additional cryptocurrency holdings and clean energy investments. Markus Thielen, an analyst at 10x Research, described Trump Media as functioning more like a crypto holdings firm wrapped around a media company, noting that the bulk of its recent losses trace back to that crypto focused strategy. He said the company is working to diversify beyond its digital asset exposure into areas like social media services, though those newer ventures have not yet produced significant revenue. Earlier this month, Trump Media abandoned a planned partnership with Crypto.com that would have introduced prediction market features on the Truth Social platform.

    Punjab bans manual receipts

The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has banned the issuance of handwritten or manual receipts by businesses operating in the province, according to a notification issued by the authority. Under the new directive, hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and marriage halls must use the Electronic Invoice Management System (EIMS) for issuing customer receipts. The system aims to ensure that businesses properly record their transactions and comply with provincial sales tax regulations. A PRA spokesperson said businesses covered by the directive must generate receipts through EIMS instead of providing handwritten slips or informal receipts to customers. The authority will monitor compliance and take action against businesses that fail to follow the requirement. Businesses that do not issue receipts through the EIMS may face fines ranging from Rs400,000 to Rs1 million, the spokesperson said. The PRA has also warned that repeated violations could lead to stricter action. Authorities may seal the business premises for up to one month if an establishment continues to disregard the rules despite previous enforcement measures. The move forms part of the Punjab government’s efforts to strengthen digital documentation of commercial transactions, improve tax compliance and reduce the possibility of underreporting sales and tax liabilities. The authority has urged businesses in the affected sectors to ensure that their invoicing systems comply with the new requirements to avoid financial penalties and other enforcement action.

Dylan Sprouse opens up about becoming a ‘girl da…

Dylan Sprouse is embracing an exciting new chapter in his life as he prepares to welcome his first child with wife Barbara Palvin. While the actor admitted he has a few fears about becoming a parent, he said he is especially thrilled about becoming a “girl dad” and cannot wait to meet his baby daughter. Sprouse spoke candidly about fatherhood during the August 4 episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast with host Amanda Hirsch. The actor shared that although he feels excited, the thought of childbirth is something he finds difficult to imagine, describing it as a “traumatic experience” for mothers and expressing deep admiration for everything women go through during pregnancy and delivery. (people.com) The 33-year-old actor admitted that watching his wife experience pregnancy has given him a new appreciation for the physical and emotional challenges of bringing a child into the world. He said the process has strengthened his respect for women and made him even more grateful for Barbara’s strength as they prepare to become parents together. Despite his concerns about the birth itself, Sprouse made it clear that excitement outweighs any nerves. He said he has always loved the idea of raising a daughter and is looking forward to creating special memories with her as she grows up. The actor described becoming a father as one of the biggest and happiest milestones of his life. Sprouse and Palvin announced earlier this year that they are expecting their first child, delighting fans who have followed their relationship for years. The couple married in July 2023 in a romantic ceremony in Hungary after several years of dating. Since then, they have frequently shared glimpses of their life together while keeping many personal moments private. Throughout the podcast conversation, Sprouse also reflected on the changes parenthood will bring. While he acknowledged that life will soon look very different, he welcomed the challenge and said he is eager to learn and grow in his new role as a father. He added that he hopes to provide a loving, supportive environment where his daughter can feel confident and happy. Fans have warmly responded to the actor’s honest comments, praising his openness about the realities of childbirth and his excitement for fatherhood. Many also appreciated the respect he showed toward mothers and the sacrifices they make during pregnancy. As Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin count down the weeks until their daughter’s arrival, the couple appears ready to embrace every moment of the journey. With love, anticipation and a healthy dose of humility, they are preparing to begin one of life’s greatest adventures—raising their first child together.
