Forgotten memories may not be gone

New research suggests that some memories that seem to be forgotten may not completely disappear from the brain.  Instead they may remain stored in a quiet state and can sometimes return when a person receives the right reminder or is placed in a familiar environment.

Scientists studied fruit flies and found that memories could become active again when the flies were placed in an environment similar to the one where the memory was first formed.

This suggests that some memories may not be erased with time. They may simply become harder for the brain to access.

Human memory is a very complex system. Some memories become weaker over time while others may suddenly return after seeing a familiar place, smelling a certain scent or noticing another related signal.

However researchers still do not fully understand why the brain sometimes creates false memories along with real ones.  Understanding how the brain brings back true memories and creates inaccurate ones remains an important question for scientists.

The findings could  help researchers better understand how memories are stored in the brain and how different surroundings or reminders can help bring forgotten memories back.

    Extreme heat and rising electricity bills have become a major concern for many families. White roofs reflect 60% to 90% of the sun’s rays keeping the roof cooler and reducing the amount of heat entering the house. This is why white roofs are becoming more common in many hot regions around the world. Natural shade can also make a big difference. Thick curtains trees around the house and rooftop plants help block sunlight and lower surrounding temperatures. Experts say that well planned tree planting can reduce nearby temperatures by as much as 15°C in some conditions making homes more comfortable while lowering electricity use.

  • 40,000-Year-Old ivory birds discovered in a German cave

    Archaeologists have recently uncovered two thumbnail-sized sculptures of birds carved from mammoth ivory approximately 40,000 years ago. These delicate figurines, which have spent dozens of millennia buried in sediment, offer an intimate glimpse into the minds, environments, and creative capacities of our ancient ancestors during the Ice Age. The astonishing discoveries were made in the Hohle Fels Cave, a site deeply embedded in the Swabian Jura region of Germany. This location has long been celebrated as one of the most critical archaeological sites in the world for understanding early modern human culture in Europe. The newly found sculptures are extraordinarily small. Each measures less than a single inch in length and weighs merely a fraction of an ounce. It makes them roughly the size of an average human thumbnail. Despite their diminutive scale, the level of detail the prehistoric artist managed to achieve is nothing short of masterful. Rather than relying on abstract or highly stylized representations, the Ice Age carver recorded specific, anatomical observations. The figurines feature carefully incised markings that clearly delineate feathers, as well as distinctively carved eyes. One of the miniature sculptures portrays a bird with its wings fully spread, capturing a moment of dynamic movement, although a few fragments of its body have unfortunately been lost to time. Remarkably, this particular piece now holds the record as the smallest Ice Age artwork ever found in the region. The second figurine, which survived completely intact, depicts a bird in a resting posture. It appears to be lying down, a pose that researchers speculate might represent the animal tending to its eggs. Experts analyzing the avian features believe that at least one of the sculptures represents a ptarmigan, a robust bird belonging to the grouse family that would have been familiar to inhabitants of the harsh Ice Age landscape. While the identity of the second bird remains slightly less certain, it too could be a ptarmigan, or possibly a small bird of prey. Because the two ivory pieces were found just about five feet apart during the 2025 excavation season and share stylistic similarities, archaeologists strongly suspect they were crafted around the exact same time, quite possibly by the very same artist. The excavation was led by Nicholas Conard and a dedicated team from the University of Tübingen, who have been meticulously studying the Hohle Fels site for nearly three decades. The process of unearthing such fragile artifacts requires incredible patience. Researchers painstakingly remove layers of earth before washing and sifting the prehistoric sediment through extremely fine mesh screens. It was during this rigorous process that Elisa Luzi, a paleontologist at the university, first spotted one of the tiny birds. She described the profound emotional weight of the moment, emphasizing the sheer privilege of being the first human being to lay eyes on the carving in 40,000 years, and feeling an instant connection to the humanity of its maker. The Hohle Fels Cave These findings belong to the Aurignacian period, an epoch that coincides with the early settlement of Homo sapiens in Europe. The Hohle Fels Cave which is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site has previously yielded some of the oldest known figurative art and musical instruments on the planet. The collection includes early bone flutes and the famous Venus of Hohle Fels. Exactly why these early humans took the time to carve such intricate, tiny birds remains a mystery. Researchers have proposed various theories, wondering if they were utilized as personal talismans meant to bring good fortune, or as cultural symbols associated with the specific identity of their owner. While we may never have a definitive answer regarding their prehistoric purpose, these thumbnail-sized masterpieces firmly remind us that the human desire to observe, create, and capture beauty is as ancient as humanity itself.  

  • Journalism Education in AI Era: Harmonizing Traditional Skills and Emerging Technologies

    By Muhammad Aaraiz Altutmish  Two weeks ago, I attended a workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at the Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN). The Workshop fetched together students, media persons, and experts to address one of the most significant topics framing advanced communication: the impression of AI on Media & Journalism.  Across the set of captivating sessions, presenters highlighted how Artificial Intelligence revolutionizing newsrooms, altering the way journalists collect information, inspect the facts and generate content. The fast development of technology specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI) has reshaped the advance digital world. AI is no longer a far-off concept; it has already integrated into the newsrooms and become a part of modern media networking. Therefore, media professionals and journalists can’t neglect this technology anymore. Instead they are continuously expected to develop their expertise and to modernize their skillset according to the changing media environment. This circumstance raises a significant question for journalism students who aim to foster their careers in the media industry. Should they first concentrate on learning the traditional basics or foundations of journalism, or should they prefer AI and developing technologies? While AI is transforming the means of working in media industry, journalism students are still needed to practice and learn the conventional principles and standards of journalism that have long been instructed in academic institutions. The AI development has brought prominent changes to writing, editing, publishing and content creation. Most of the operations can now be done in more quick and efficient way. Research functions have become effortless and many of newsroom tasks have been managed via technological tools. These advancements have transformed the media organizations operate and have affected many aspects of journalistic practices. Regardless of these changes, journalism education proceeds to emphasize the conventional methods of reporting, news values, interviewing techniques, fact- verification, and other foundational skills. Students are expected to master these standard practices while they also have to upskill themselves understanding and adapting to AI driven technologies and tools. As a result, journalism students often face the challenge of learning both traditional techniques and mastering themselves to developing technological skills within the same academic timeframe. This challenge becomes even more substantial for upcoming generations of media education and profession. They will have the same timeframe of study as former generations, still they may need to master a wide range of subjects and practical skills. Alongside traditional training of journalism, they will also require to develop their skillset related to AI, Digital media technologies, data driven networking and developing newsroom techniques. Consequently, media instructors, academic institutions, field professionals, and experts are set upon with a significant problem. They must reflect upon that how journalism education can accommodate both traditional practices of journalism and developing technological requirements. The hurdle stems in empowering students to master a wider spectrum of knowledge and practical experience within the existing timeframes and educational structures. The development of AI in journalism has therefore produced a new educational reality. While conventional journalism stands a central component of media education, technological developments continues to transform professional expectations. This continuing transformation spotlight the growing requirement to confront how future journalists can productively learn both the traditional practices of journalism and developing skills needed in an AI-driven media environment.   • Japan launches cooling shirt with built in fans

    Japan is finding a new way to deal with extreme summer heat.  A Japanese clothing company has introduced a formal looking shirt with built in fans that can help keep people cool while they are outside. The company, Yofuku no Aoyama has launched a short sleeved shirt fitted with two small fans. The fans circulate air inside the shirt helping cool the wearer while walking or traveling. At first glance the shirt looks like a normal office shirt. However it has a small cooling system hidden inside. The fans are placed near the lower back and push air through the shirt to reduce heat and discomfort. Cooling clothes with built in fans have become popular in Japan over the past few years. They were mainly used by construction workers garbage collectors, security staff and other outdoor workers.  Most of these products looked like jackets or work vests rather than regular office clothing. With summers becoming hotter demand for cooling clothes is now growing among office workers and other people who spend time outdoors. To meet this demand Yofuku no Aoyama developed the shirt in partnership with FZN a company that specializes in fan powered clothing. The shirt comes with two fans and a rechargeable battery. The company has tried to keep the cooling system as light as possible. Each fan weighs around 95 grams, while the battery pack weighs about 165 grams. The fans are visible from the back but the designers have kept the rest of the system as discreet as possible so the shirt still looks suitable for an office environment. The company has not provided specific information about how loud the fans are so they may not be  completely silent. The shirt is mainly designed for traveling rather than meetings. Most offices and meeting rooms already have air conditioning so there is little need to use the fans indoors. However the cooling system can be useful when employees walk between meetings travel by public transport or spend time outside in hot weather. It may also help workers arrive at their destination without becoming heavily sweaty reducing the need to change clothes before continuing their work. Price and Availability The Coochowear Short Sleeve Shirt is being sold as a complete cooling package for 17,490 Japanese yen. The package includes the shirt two fans a rechargeable battery pack and a charging cable. The shirt is available in blue and gray with medium large and extra large sizes. The product is now available through the company’s stores and online shop.

    Behind the 19th-century Victorian red-brick arches of Mayo Hospital exists one of Lahore’s most vibrant bazaars: Mayo Landa. First-time visitors might expect a simple fleece and jacket bazaar through the narrow lanes behind Mayo Hospital. However, it reveals something far richer. Mayo Landa has transformed into a bustling open-air ecosystem where global fashion, imported household goods, rare oddities, and genuine historic antiques intersect at prices that defy modern inflation. The word landa originates from the Punjabi term for roofless or uncovered. It usually refers to the early informal stalls that traders set up along open alleys without permanent shopfronts. The origins of Lahore’s landa market trace back to the pre-partition British colonial era. It is located strategically between the Lahore Railway Station and bustling medical hub of Mayo Hospital (established in 1871). The area naturally became a high-traffic junction for travelers, laborers, and rural migrants. Vendors began setting up wooden crates and blankets to sell low-cost textiles and goods to working-class families who could not afford stuff otherwise. Following the partition in 1947, the market expanded rapidly to accommodate millions of resettling families seeking affordable essentials. Over the decades, small family-run stalls grew into an organized nationwide wholesale network. Today, Mayo Landa operates as a major locality for imported pre-owned items. These are sourced globally from North America, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. While everyday apparel from heavy winter coats to designer sneakers remains a staple, the modern Mayo Landa experience goes far beyond clothing. Collectors regularly scour the market for genuine heavy-leather jackets, vintage denim, and retro sports gear that would cost hundreds of dollars internationally. Stalls feature everything from Japanese porcelain and European glassware to high-end kitchenware and functional electronics. Antique items are hidden within subtle corner stalls and old storerooms. Victorian brass lamps, mid-century mechanical clocks, classic cameras, old vinyl records, and hand-carved wooden artifacts. Prices are mostly negotiated through traditional haggling. Mayo Landa is more than just a flea market to the frequent visitors. It is a living archive of economic resilience, sustainable reuse, and cultural heritage. In a world dominated by fast fashion and mass-produced plastic, this historic corner of Old Lahore offers something rare. It’s the thrill of real discovery backed by over a century of history.  

  • Daily multivitamins may boost heart health in older adults

    A new medical study suggests that taking multivitamins every day may help older adults maintain better health as they age. As people grow older their physical and mental abilities naturally begin to decline. Researchers from Augusta University in the United States studied how daily multivitamin use affects the health of older people. The study analyzed data from more than 16,000 adults aged 60 and above. At the start of the research all participants were free from heart disease. They were divided into groups. one group received daily multivitamin supplements another received cocoa extract supplements a third used both and the fourth group received a placebo. The study continued for three years. During this time researchers regularly checked participants daily activities health conditions and signs of heart problems. After three years researchers found that people taking multivitamins showed better heart related health and had a lower risk of some serious health issues. The supplements were also linked with a reduced risk of narrowing in a major artery that carries blood from the neck to the brain. Scientists believe multivitamins may help by filling small gaps in essential minerals supporting cell functions and improving blood vessel health. Researchers said the findings suggest that daily multivitamin use may help older adults maintain heart health and improve their quality of life. However they also noted that more research is needed to understand the exact reasons behind these benefits. Multivitamins are widely used around the world especially by people who want to support fitness overall health and reduce the risk of long term diseases.
