From Glasgow to the heart of UK power

How Anas Sarwar challenged a Prime Minister, reshaped Labour politics and rose to become a UK minister

Anas Sarwar’s journey from a young Scottish politician carrying the weight of a famous political surname to one of the most senior ministers in the British government has reached a defining moment. His appointment as Minister of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, alongside his elevation to the House of Lords, marks one of the most significant political achievements by a British politician of Pakistani heritage in recent decades.

The appointment also underlines the confidence Prime Minister Andy Burnham has placed in Sarwar, entrusting him with a department central to the government’s ambitions for economic growth, scientific research, innovation and international trade.

A FAMILY THAT MADE HISTORY

Politics has long been part of the Sarwar family story.

Anas Sarwar is the son of Mohammad Sarwar, who made British political history in 1997 by becoming the first Muslim and the first MP of Pakistani origin elected to the House of Commons. Mohammad Sarwar later went on to serve as Governor of Punjab, Pakistan’s largest province, giving the family a unique political legacy spanning both Britain and Pakistan.

Although his father’s achievements opened doors for greater representation of British Pakistanis in politics, Anas Sarwar has spent much of his career building his own political identity through perseverance, resilience and leadership.

A POLITICAL CAREER BUILT ON RESILIENCE

A qualified dentist by profession, Sarwar entered Parliament after winning Glasgow Central in 2010.

His political career has been shaped by both success and setbacks.

Following Labour’s electoral collapse in Scotland in 2015, Sarwar emerged as one of the party’s most recognisable figures during one of its darkest periods. He served as Deputy Leader of Scottish Labour before unsuccessfully contesting the party leadership. Rather than retreating from frontline politics, he rebuilt his standing within the party and was elected Leader of Scottish Labour in 2021.

Tasked with reviving a party that had suffered years of decline, Sarwar focused on rebuilding Labour’s organisation, reconnecting with voters and restoring its credibility as Scotland’s principal opposition party.

THE MAN WHO FIRST CHALLENGED STARMER

Sarwar’s reputation as an independent political figure was cemented during Labour’s leadership crisis when he became the first senior Labour politician to publicly call for Keir Starmer to resign.

At a time when many senior figures remained publicly loyal, Sarwar openly argued that Labour required a change in leadership. Political observers viewed his intervention as a turning point that encouraged wider debate within the party over Starmer’s future. In the weeks that followed, pressure on the Prime Minister intensified, ultimately culminating in Starmer’s resignation and the election of Andy Burnham as Labour leader and Prime Minister.

Today, the politician who first publicly challenged Starmer has become one of the key members of Burnham’s ministerial team—an illustration of how dramatically Labour’s political landscape has changed.

A KEY ROLE IN GOVERNMENT

Sarwar’s appointment as Minister of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade places him at the centre of one of the government’s most important departments.

His responsibilities will include supporting business investment, promoting innovation, advancing scientific research, strengthening Britain’s industrial strategy and expanding international trade—areas regarded as crucial to the UK’s long-term economic future.

His elevation to the House of Lords enables him to take up ministerial office while bringing his tenure as Leader of Scottish Labour to an end, triggering a contest to choose his successor.

POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Political commentators believe the appointment carries significance far beyond a routine cabinet reshuffle.

For Prime Minister Andy Burnham, it brings an experienced political strategist into a department central to delivering economic growth.

For Scottish Labour, it marks the departure of the leader who steadied the party during a challenging period and leaves a significant leadership vacancy.

For Britain’s Pakistani community, Sarwar’s promotion represents another landmark in the growing influence of British Pakistanis at the highest levels of national politics.

COLLEAGUES SEE A RESILIENT LEADER

Labour colleagues have publicly described Sarwar as a disciplined and pragmatic politician who remained committed to rebuilding Scottish Labour despite difficult electoral circumstances.

Political observers argue that his appointment reflects years of persistence, resilience and organisational leadership rather than a sudden political promotion.

Critics, meanwhile, have questioned his move from frontline Scottish politics to the unelected House of Lords, arguing that Scottish Labour loses one of its most experienced leaders at a crucial political moment.

A NEW CHAPTER

Anas Sarwar now moves from leading Labour in Scotland to helping shape Britain’s economic future from the heart of government.

His appointment completes a political journey that began in Glasgow, was forged through years of electoral battles and internal party struggles, and has culminated in one of the most influential ministerial positions in Westminster.

From following in the footsteps of his father, Mohammad Sarwar, to becoming the first senior Labour figure to challenge Keir Starmer’s leadership and now joining Andy Burnham’s Cabinet, Anas Sarwar’s rise reflects one of the most remarkable political stories in contemporary British politics.

Trump touts Iran talks as Netanyahu arrives

US President Donald Trump has said that Washington is engaged in “very friendly talks” with Tehran as efforts continue to prevent a fresh escalation in the Iran war. Trump’s remarks came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Washington for talks with the US president. The meeting is expected to focus heavily on the conflict with Iran and the possibility of reaching a longer-term agreement. The latest developments come after several days of reduced military activity between the United States and Iran. However, tensions remain high. Both sides continue to issue warnings and maintain their military positions. Iran has indicated that it remains open to diplomacy. At the same time, Tehran has warned that it is prepared to respond strongly if the United States launches another attack. Iranian officials have also stressed that Washington will not decide when the country should choose between negotiations and confrontation. Tehran has said that communication with the US is continuing through intermediaries. Qatar and Pakistan are among the regional countries involved in facilitating communication between the two sides. Iranian officials have described the diplomatic channel as active but uncertain. Several major issues remain unresolved. The nuclear programme is expected to be one of the central subjects in any future agreement. Sanctions, compensation for war-related damage and security arrangements are also likely to complicate negotiations. The Strait of Hormuz remains another major obstacle. The strategic waterway is vital for international energy supplies. Iran has insisted on maintaining a significant role in controlling and regulating movement through the strait. Washington, meanwhile, wants the waterway to return to normal operations. The issue has become an important source of leverage for Tehran and a major concern for the global energy market. Trump has indicated that he wants an agreement but has also warned that military action could resume if diplomacy fails. His comments have added pressure to the ongoing negotiations. The situation has also created wider economic concerns. Australia, which relies heavily on imported fuel, is considering plans for a new domestic oil refinery. The proposal comes as disruptions to global energy supplies raise concerns about fuel security. The conflict has also affected several Gulf states. Saudi Arabia has condemned a reported drone attack by Iran-aligned groups in Iraq targeting Riyadh and energy infrastructure in the kingdom’s Eastern Province. Satellite imagery has also shown smoke rising from areas in Saudi Arabia after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis claimed attacks against oil-related facilities. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s visit to Washington has added another layer to the diplomatic situation. Israel took part in the military campaign against Iran alongside the United States but has not been directly involved in the latest US-Iran diplomatic contacts. The Israeli prime minister is expected to discuss the conflict with Trump. Differences could emerge over the direction of US policy and the possibility of a diplomatic settlement. The meeting also comes amid continuing Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank. Israeli forces have carried out further raids in the territory, while former senior Israeli military officials have reportedly urged Trump to pressure Netanyahu to reduce the violence. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has also raised concerns over alleged violations of international law in the region. His office has documented incidents in Lebanon and said some could potentially amount to war crimes. Despite the latest diplomatic activity, the path toward a lasting agreement remains uncertain. Washington and Tehran appear interested in avoiding another major escalation, but serious disagreements continue to stand in the way of a final settlement. The Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions and the consequences of the conflict are likely to remain central to the next phase of negotiations.

    India alarmed by Pakistan-Saudi-Türkiye alliance

The defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye has emerged as a major strategic concern for India. The three countries signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement on August 7. Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three countries would be treated as an attack against all three. The agreement has attracted significant attention in New Delhi. Indian analysts are assessing its possible impact on the regional balance of power. An Indian media analysis recalled comments made by Indian Army Deputy Chief Lieutenant General Rahul R Singh in 2025. He had said that during the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May, India faced several forms of support for Pakistan. The analysis claimed that Pakistan was directly involved in the conflict. It also alleged that China provided satellite information to Pakistan. Türkiye was accused of providing military assistance to Pakistan. The assistance reportedly included drones and other defence equipment. Saudi Arabia’s participation has now added another dimension to India’s concerns. Indian analysts fear that Riyadh could support Pakistan if another armed conflict breaks out between India and Pakistan. The concern comes despite India’s strong relations with Saudi Arabia. The two countries have extensive economic and strategic ties. India and Saudi Arabia cooperate in oil, trade, investment, security and cultural affairs. Their bilateral trade is estimated at around $43 billion. Saudi Arabia also remains an important supplier of crude oil to India. It reportedly meets around 14% of India’s crude oil requirements. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia also have a long history of defence cooperation. Pakistan has provided military training to Saudi forces. Pakistani military personnel have also been deployed in Saudi Arabia at different times. The Indian analysis claimed that Pakistan sent around 8,000 military personnel and 16 JF-17 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia during 2026. It also referred to reports about possible Pakistani drone support and Chinese-made air defence systems. These developments were reportedly linked to Saudi Arabia’s security concerns and attacks involving drones. The relationship between Pakistan and Türkiye has also expanded significantly in recent years. The two countries have increased cooperation in defence technology and military production. Pakistan has acquired Turkish-made warships and other defence equipment. Türkiye has also supported the modernisation of Pakistan’s naval capabilities. The two countries are also cooperating in the field of unmanned aerial systems. Pakistan has acquired Turkish Bayraktar Akıncı drones. Both sides have discussed and worked on expanding cooperation in drone technology. Türkiye’s KAAN stealth fighter has also attracted interest from Pakistan. However, no final purchase agreement for the aircraft has been confirmed.

Harry sees Invictus Games as chance to reconnect with King Charles

Prince Harry reportedly views next year’s Invictus Games in Birmingham as a genuine opportunity to repair his strained relationship with King Charles. The event is said to hold deep personal significance for him. According to RadarOnline, organisers of the Invictus Games are planning to invite the monarch to attend next year’s edition. Insiders claim the Duke of Sussex sees the homecoming event as a meaningful chance to grow closer to his father. A source told the outlet that Harry views the Birmingham Games as one of the most significant moments he’s experienced in years. According to the insider, bringing Invictus back to Britain carries deep personal weight for him. The source explained that Harry is determined to make the event a landmark occasion, one that celebrates both the organisation’s achievements and the servicemen and women it was created to support. That ambition, they said, remains central to his motivation. Beyond the event itself, insiders suggest there’s an added layer of significance given where things currently stand between Harry and his father. According to the source, Harry believes Invictus offers a rare setting where Charles could attend without the visit becoming solely about their relationship. The insider explained that the competitors would remain the true focus of the occasion throughout. At the same time, father and son could appear together in support of a cause they both understand and care about. That dynamic, sources suggest, could offer a low-pressure opportunity for the two to reconnect. Rather than a formal reconciliation attempt, the setting would allow any interaction between them to unfold naturally within a broader, shared purpose. For Harry, insiders say, the Games represent more than just an athletic event. They are being viewed as a potential turning point in a relationship that has remained visibly strained in recent years. Whether King Charles ultimately accepts the invitation remains to be seen. If he does, though, the Birmingham Games could become one of the more closely watched royal moments of the coming year.
