Galle Gallants storm into LPL 2026 final on Sam Harper’s fireworks

Galle Gallants have booked their place in the Lanka Premier League 2026 final after a commanding win. They beat Colombo Kaps by six wickets in the second qualifier at the R Premadasa Stadium on Friday.

Chasing a target of 177, the Gallants completed the win on the fourth ball of the 18th over. They lost just four wickets throughout the entire chase.

The innings got off to a shaky start after Thomas Rogers fell for 13 in just the third over. From there, though, Sam Harper and Charith Asalanka took full control of the run chase.

The pair added 126 runs together off just 85 deliveries, taking the total to 147 inside 16.3 overs. Asalanka eventually departed after scoring 59 off 42 balls, hitting four sixes and three fours along the way.

Harper continued his excellent tournament form, following his wicket with a stylish half-century of his own. The Australian batter finished unbeaten on 77 off 51 balls, striking four sixes and four boundaries in the process.

Despite a flurry of late wickets, skipper Dasun Shanaka and Sahan Arachchige steadied the innings from there. The pair remained unbeaten on 8 and 5 respectively, guiding their side comfortably over the line.

Ravindu Fernando was the pick of the bowlers for Colombo Kaps, picking up two wickets in the match. Earlier in the day, Kaps had posted 176 in 18.5 overs after being put in to bat first.

Rubin Hermann and Ravindu Fernando played key roles with the bat, rescuing their side from an early collapse. Galle Gallants will now face Jaffna Kings in the LPL 2026 final on Saturday, at the same venue.

    KARACHI: The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) on Friday announced the results of the Intermediate Part-II annual examinations 2026. Students from government colleges secured top positions in several groups, highlighting the strong performance of public-sector educational institutions. BIEK Chairman Professor Ghaffar Muhammad Lakho said the results were encouraging for government colleges. He noted that the top two positions in the pre-medical group were won by students of a government college. According to him, this reflects the growing trust of students and parents in public-sector education. In the pre-medical group, Hafsa Khan of BAMM PECHS Government College for Women secured first position. She scored 1,011 marks out of a total of 1,100. Her classmate Huda Sarwar claimed the second position with 1,007 marks. Amina Aziz of Bahria College, Karsaz, secured third place after obtaining 1,004 marks. Controller of Examinations Zarina Rashid said that 23,613 students registered for the pre-medical examinations. A total of 23,007 candidates appeared in the exams. Out of them, 14,134 students passed. The overall pass percentage in the pre-medical group remained 61.43%. Female students dominated the Arts Private Group by securing all top three positions. Rafia Shoaib Jaliwala topped the group with 925 marks. Almas Fatima and Khansa Raza jointly secured the second position with 902 marks each. Amra Shoaib Jaliwala stood third after scoring 901 marks. Students also performed well in the Home Economics Group. Azka Imran of Rana Liaquat Ali Khan Government College of Home Economics secured first position with 973 marks out of 1,200. Aila Anwar obtained second position with 968 marks. Yamna Shariq secured third place by scoring 953 marks. Special candidates also recorded an impressive performance. In the Arts Regular category, Syed Hammad Ali secured first position with 1,004 marks. Taha Ahmed came second with 990 marks, while Maryam Bibi claimed third position after scoring 985 marks. The board said the pass percentage in the Arts Private Group stood at 50.04%. The Home Economics Group recorded a pass rate of 52.47%. The highest success ratio was observed among special candidates, where the pass percentage reached 95.87%.

    POC holders allowed to perform Hajj under Pakistan…

    ISLAMABAD: Holders of the Pakistan Origin Card (POC) will now be able to perform Hajj under Pakistan’s official Hajj quota, according to sources familiar with the development. Sources said one per cent of Pakistan’s total Hajj quota will be reserved for POC holders. The decision is expected to provide an opportunity for overseas Pakistanis of Pakistani origin who no longer hold Pakistani citizenship or passports to perform Hajj through Pakistan’s quota for the first time. Under the arrangement, 1,792 POC holders will be eligible to perform Hajj using Pakistan’s allocated quota. The sources said Saudi Arabia has allowed POC holders to be included in Pakistan’s Hajj quota. The permission is being described as a significant development for people of Pakistani origin living abroad who have surrendered their Pakistani citizenship or passports but retain their connection with the country through the Pakistan Origin Card. POC holders will reportedly be eligible to benefit from both the government and private Hajj schemes. This will give eligible applicants the option of choosing between the two arrangements, subject to the applicable rules and requirements. The allocation of one per cent of the overall quota means that a specific number of pilgrims of Pakistani origin will be accommodated within Pakistan’s annual Hajj arrangements without holding Pakistani citizenship. The facility is particularly significant for overseas Pakistanis who have maintained strong links with Pakistan despite giving up their citizenship. The Pakistan Origin Card provides such individuals with a formal connection to the country and facilitates their access to several rights and services. Sources said the inclusion of POC holders in Pakistan’s Hajj quota has been permitted by Saudi authorities following discussions concerning arrangements for Pakistani pilgrims. The move is expected to benefit members of the Pakistani diaspora who have previously faced limitations in performing Hajj through Pakistan because they no longer possess Pakistani passports. The development comes as preparations for the upcoming Hajj season continue. A large number of Pakistani pilgrims are expected to travel to Saudi Arabia under both government and private schemes. The government has also been working on arrangements concerning accommodation, transportation, medical facilities and other services for Pakistani pilgrims. The inclusion of POC holders could further strengthen the connection between Pakistan and its overseas community, particularly those who continue to maintain cultural, family and social ties with the country.
