Global oil prices edge higher amid incertainty over Strait of Hormuz

Global crude oil prices moved higher on Monday as uncertainty surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz continued to influence market sentiment and raise concerns about potential disruptions to international energy supplies.

According to media reports, oil prices gained during Asian trading, with investors closely monitoring developments related to the strategic waterway and the ongoing discussions over shipping arrangements.

Brent crude futures climbed by more than 1%, moving above the $84-per-barrel mark. US crude oil also recorded a gain of more than 1% during the session, reflecting renewed concerns over the stability of oil shipments through the region.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major focus for global energy markets because of its importance to international oil transportation. Any prolonged disruption to shipping through the waterway could put upward pressure on crude prices and raise concerns about supplies to major importing countries.

Market participants are therefore keeping a close watch on diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring normal maritime traffic. Uncertainty over when and under what conditions the waterway will fully reopen has added to volatility in crude oil markets.

Iran has said that an understanding with Oman regarding the establishment of new shipping routes is nearing completion. However, Tehran has also maintained that the Strait of Hormuz will not fully reopen until additional conditions involving the United States are addressed.

The conflicting positions have left traders uncertain about the timing of a broader resolution. As a result, oil markets remain sensitive to any fresh developments involving Iran, Oman, the United States and maritime traffic through the strait.

A sustained increase in crude prices could have wider economic implications, particularly for countries that rely heavily on imported petroleum. Higher international oil prices can increase import bills, put pressure on foreign exchange reserves and contribute to higher domestic fuel costs.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, low to moderate flooding has also been forecast in rivers, streams and rain-fed waterways in Chitral, Upper Dir, Abbottabad, Shangla, Khyber, Orakzai, Kohat, Tank and North and South Waziristan. Authorities have urged local administrations and disaster-management agencies in vulnerable districts to maintain close coordination and monitor developments, particularly in areas located near rivers, streams and seasonal rain drains. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and stay informed about weather and flood alerts issued by the relevant authorities. The latest warnings come as the country continues to monitor the impact of the ongoing monsoon activity, which can cause sudden increases in river flows and urban flooding in areas receiving intense or prolonged rainfall.

    PM Shehbaz hails PML-N’s stunning AJK victory

    The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) emerged as the leading party in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections. Unofficial and unofficial results from all 13 constituencies in the Mirpur division showed that PML-N candidates won nine seats, while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured four. PML-N won constituencies LA-1 Mirpur-1, LA-4 Mirpur-4, LA-5 Bhimber-1, LA-6 Bhimber-2, LA-7 Bhimber-3, LA-9 Kotli-2, LA-11 Kotli-4, LA-12 Kotli-5 and LA-13 Kotli-6. The PPP secured two seats in Mirpur and two in Kotli. Its successful constituencies included LA-2 Mirpur-2, LA-3 Mirpur-3, LA-8 Kotli-1 and LA-10 Kotli-3. Voting was held on July 27 across 13 constituencies covering Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber. Polling officially ended at 5pm, after which an additional hour was allowed for voters already waiting to cast their ballots. Following the announcement of the initial results, PML-N candidates and supporters celebrated their party’s strong performance in the first phase. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated PML-N candidates on securing a clear lead in the AJK elections. He said the strong participation of political parties demonstrated the successful continuation of the democratic process. The prime minister urged voters to participate with the same enthusiasm in the next phase of the elections and contribute to strengthening the democratic process. He also praised PML-N’s campaign in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, saying the party’s team, under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif, had conducted a highly successful election campaign.

The incident happened shortly after 10pm local time in the Tiergarten area, near the route of the Pride celebrations. Emergency services rushed to the scene as police launched a major operation and ordered people to leave the area. According to police, the vehicle struck several people before the driver fled the scene. One person died, while 16 others were injured. Several victims were reported to be in serious or life-threatening condition, adding to the shock surrounding an event that had begun peacefully. Authorities quickly called off the remaining Christopher Street Day celebrations and urged visitors to stay away from the affected area. Police and rescue teams remained deployed around Tiergarten as investigators worked to establish exactly what happened and why. The incident also triggered an immediate search for the suspected driver. Police said they had identified a possible suspect but had not initially confirmed an arrest. German authorities were investigating the circumstances and motive behind the vehicle attack. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner described the incident as an attack on the city’s free and cosmopolitan society, expressing sympathy for the victims and their families. He also praised emergency responders who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also condemned the incident and pledged that those responsible would face justice. The tragedy cast a dark shadow over one of Berlin’s biggest annual public celebrations. Christopher Street Day is both a major Pride gathering and a public demonstration for LGBTQ+ rights, equality and freedom.     Pakistan pushes for US-Iran dialogue under Islamab…

    Pakistan is continuing diplomatic efforts to bring the United States and Iran back to the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in a bid to ease regional tensions and promote dialogue, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Thursday. Speaking at the weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said Pakistan remains actively engaged with all relevant parties to encourage the implementation of the Islamabad MoU and the Pakistan-Qatar joint understanding aimed at reducing tensions. He said negotiations are continuing to restore stability, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, and to support efforts for de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy. The spokesperson noted that although the region had witnessed a brief period of relative calm, the security situation remains fragile. He said Pakistan hopes the reduction in hostilities will pave the way for a lasting ceasefire and meaningful negotiations. Reaffirming Islamabad’s position, Andrabi said dialogue and diplomacy remain the only practical solution to the ongoing crisis. He added that Pakistan welcomes every initiative aimed at resuming talks between Iran and the United States and will continue to play a constructive role in regional peace efforts. He urged all sides to exercise maximum restraint and honour their commitments to resume technical-level discussions under the Islamabad MoU. Highlighting Pakistan’s recent diplomatic engagements, Andrabi said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman agreed to continue close coordination for regional peace, stability and the uninterrupted movement of lawful maritime trade through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. He said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also held separate telephone conversations with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi. The discussions focused on the evolving regional situation, diplomatic cooperation and efforts to maintain peace and stability. The spokesperson said Pakistan and Kuwait also reaffirmed their longstanding partnership and agreed to expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy, information technology, agriculture, education and healthcare. He added that Kuwait’s ratification of the Pakistan-Kuwait Defence Cooperation Agreement would further strengthen defence collaboration between the two countries. Andrabi also highlighted Pakistan’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, where Islamabad reaffirmed its commitment to regional connectivity, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Belt and Road Initiative while expressing readiness to assume the SCO chairmanship for 2026-27. On Pakistan-US relations, he said Ishaq Dar recently met a visiting US congressional delegation and an American business delegation, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation through stronger parliamentary, economic and people-to-people engagement. Addressing the situation in Palestine, Andrabi said Pakistan joined several Arab and Islamic countries in condemning Israeli actions in Jerusalem and called on the international community to uphold international law, protect Palestinian rights and preserve the historical and religious status of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
