Three killed as heavy monsoon rains trigger floodi…

At least three people lost their lives and three others were injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab as heavy monsoon showers triggered urban flooding, damaged homes, and disrupted daily life in several cities. Authorities have placed emergency services on high alert as the current spell of rain is expected to continue through August 5.

According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), one man died and another person was injured after a house collapsed in Uch Sharif, Bahawalpur district. In a separate incident, two children drowned in Khushab during the ongoing monsoon rains.

Two additional people sustained injuries in separate roof collapse incidents reported in Mandi Bahauddin and Lodhran. The PDMA also confirmed damage to at least one house in Bahawalpur.

Officials clarified that nine other deaths reported on the same day were not directly linked to rain or flooding. These incidents included drownings in canals and rivers in Kot Addu, Narowal, and Attock, while four children tragically died of suffocation after becoming trapped inside a parked vehicle in Mianwali.

PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa directed deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain on high alert as heavy rainfall is forecast to continue. He said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is personally monitoring the situation and has instructed district administrations, Rescue 1122, Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), and other departments to remain fully prepared for emergencies.

Lahore experienced several hours of intense rainfall, leaving many roads and residential areas submerged. Water accumulated up to one-and-a-half feet deep in areas including Township, Kacha Jail Road, Haider Road, and the Quaid-i-Azam Industrial Estate, causing severe traffic congestion and disrupting public movement.

According to Wasa Lahore, the city received an average rainfall of 24.8 millimetres, with the highest rainfall recorded at the Wasa Head Office in Gulberg at 66.4mm. Significant rainfall was also reported in Shadipura, Mughalpura, Mannawan, Johar Town, Tajpura, and several other localities.

Faisalabad recorded the highest rainfall in Punjab at 103mm, resulting in extensive urban flooding at multiple locations. Water levels reached up to 23 inches in some areas, prompting Wasa teams to continue dewatering operations throughout the day.

Heavy rainfall also affected Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin, where roads were inundated and drainage operations remained underway. In contrast, Jhelum recorded only light rainfall, and officials reported that all waterlogging points had been cleared by the afternoon.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, stay away from electricity poles and damaged buildings, and keep children away from floodwater and fast-flowing canals as monsoon conditions persist across the province.

Dar urges SCO action against Afghan terrorism

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has called on member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to strengthen regional cooperation against terrorism, saying lasting peace and economic development cannot be achieved unless militant groups operating from Afghan territory are effectively eliminated. Addressing the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Dar said Pakistan remains committed to regional peace and wants to see Afghanistan emerge as a peaceful, stable, regionally connected and economically prosperous country. He said a secure Afghanistan would benefit not only Pakistan but all SCO member states and the wider region. The foreign minister described terrorism originating from Afghan territory as one of the most serious security challenges facing Pakistan. He said militant organisations continue to use Afghan soil for recruitment, training and planning attacks, creating persistent threats to regional stability. Dar said Pakistan has suffered heavily from terrorism in recent years. According to him, more than 560 Pakistanis have lost their lives in over 2,000 terrorist incidents since the beginning of this year. He added that investigations into several attacks had also identified the involvement of Afghan nationals. He urged the SCO to play a more active role in addressing the security situation and called on the Afghan authorities to honour their international commitments against terrorism. He stressed that no country’s territory should be allowed to serve as a base for militant activities targeting neighbouring states. Speaking about the SCO, Dar said the organisation has developed into one of the region’s most important platforms for cooperation over the past 25 years. He noted that it now promotes collaboration not only in security but also in trade, economic development, connectivity, culture and regional stability. Looking ahead, Dar said the organisation should place greater emphasis on digital development, technological cooperation, innovation and energy security to meet future regional challenges and promote sustainable economic growth among member states. Turning to the Middle East, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s position that dialogue, diplomacy and mutual respect remain the only effective means of resolving international disputes. He said peaceful negotiations are essential for achieving lasting regional peace and preventing further conflict. He also highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. Dar said Pakistan played an important role in encouraging direct engagement between the two countries, leading to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year. He described the agreement as a significant diplomatic achievement and encouraged the international community to build on the progress made through continued negotiations. On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, Dar held separate meetings with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing regional cooperation and expanding collaboration through multilateral organisations. During his meeting with Wang Yi, both leaders reviewed Pakistan-China relations and exchanged views on regional developments. The Chinese foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote regional peace and extended best wishes for Pakistan’s upcoming chairmanship of the SCO for 2026-27.

UK stars join the fight to stop the Paramount-Warner Bros mega-merger

Benedict Cumberbatch, Alan Cumming, and Benedict Wong are calling on the British government to step in and stop a massive media merger. They believe the deal could seriously damage the country’s entertainment industry. The three actors co-wrote an opinion piece for the Guardian, warning readers about the potential fallout from the merger. They urged immediate action to prevent it from going through. The well-known performers argued that the merger poses a serious threat to the public, describing its consequences as deeply harmful to people across Britain. Their intervention follows similar pushback from actors in Hollywood, adding British voices to the growing opposition against the proposed $111 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. The trio emphasized their long-standing ties to the UK’s creative industry, noting decades spent collaborating with British crews on British stages and film sets. They framed their involvement as a natural extension of their responsibility toward audiences who support and enjoy their work. According to the actors, the merger threatens nearly 180,000 jobs within the UK’s entertainment sector. It also puts billions of pounds in annual production spending at risk. They described the situation as one where intervention could still make a difference, calling it a battle that can still be won if action is taken soon. The piece also referenced recent comments from UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, who has hinted she might take formal steps to intervene in the deal. The actors suggested that Nandy’s potential involvement represents one of two major fronts in the broader fight to stop the merger. They called any decision from her department potentially one of the most consequential moves affecting British film and television in years. Towards the end of their piece, the trio acknowledged that actors are typically expected to steer clear of legal and regulatory debates. However, they pushed back against that expectation, explaining that their years spent working alongside British crews, watching talented homegrown productions struggle to secure funding, gave them a personal stake in the outcome. Their public stance adds significant star power to the growing resistance against the merger. Industry figures on both sides of the Atlantic continue voicing concerns about its potential impact on jobs, cultural output, and the broader landscape of film and television production in the UK.

15 martyred in terror attack on joint security Che…

At least 15 people, including 14 security personnel, were martyred after terrorists launched a major attack on a joint security checkpost in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the early hours of Friday. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the attackers attempted to storm the checkpost in a coordinated assault. Security personnel immediately responded with heavy fire and successfully prevented the militants from capturing the position. During the intense gun battle, security forces killed 12 terrorists who were attempting to escape after the failed assault. Officials said the troops displayed exceptional bravery and professionalism while defending the post. The attackers later rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the outer wall of the checkpost. The massive explosion caused severe structural damage and resulted in the martyrdom of 12 army personnel, two police officers and one Forest Department official who were performing their duties at the time of the attack. The blast also damaged parts of the security installation, while emergency teams rushed to the area to assist the injured and secure the site. Following the attack, security forces launched a large-scale search and clearance operation in the surrounding areas to track down any remaining militants and ensure the area was fully secured. The operation is continuing. Military officials said Pakistan’s security forces remain fully committed to eliminating terrorism and will continue intelligence-based operations across the country under the Azm-i-Istehkam national counterterrorism strategy. The military paid tribute to the martyred personnel, describing their sacrifice as a symbol of courage, dedication and unwavering commitment to the defence of the country. Officials said such attacks would not weaken the nation’s resolve to defeat terrorism. The latest incident comes amid continued efforts by security forces to dismantle militant networks operating in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan through intelligence-led operations. Authorities have intensified counterterrorism efforts in recent months following a rise in attacks targeting security personnel and public installations. Senior officials condemned the attack and vowed that those responsible would be hunted down and brought to justice. They reaffirmed that operations against terrorist groups would continue until peace and stability are fully restored across Pakistan. Security experts believe militant groups are attempting to target security installations to undermine ongoing counterterrorism operations. However, officials maintain that such attacks will only strengthen the determination of Pakistan’s security forces to continue their mission against terrorism.

Activist urges President to withdraw Civil awards …

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani citizen and activist Ashba Kamran has formally written to President Asif Ali Zardari, calling for the immediate withdrawal of national civil awards announced by the government on August 14, 2026, for serving bureaucrats, federal secretaries and ministers. In her letter addressed to the President, Kamran argued that awarding national honours to salaried bureaucrats and ministers for carrying out their routine official responsibilities amounts to a violation of the Constitution and relevant laws. She maintained that government officials should not receive national awards merely for performing duties for which they are already appointed and paid. According to the letter, Kamran had previously raised similar concerns with the Presidency in August 2025 and had sent a formal reminder regarding the issue. However, she claimed that despite the earlier communication, the administration once again took what she described as an unconstitutional step by including serving government officials among the recipients of civil awards announced on August 14 this year. The activist cited constitutional and legal provisions to support her position. Referring to Article 259(2) of the Constitution of Pakistan, she argued that national awards are intended to recognise exceptional achievements, including acts of bravery, distinguished services by members of the armed forces, academic distinction and extraordinary and selfless public service. She further maintained that the concept of “public service” in the context of national honours should refer to exceptional and self-sacrificing contributions rather than the routine responsibilities performed by bureaucrats and ministers in their official capacities. Such responsibilities, she argued, are already compensated through regular salaries and official benefits. Kamran also referred to the Decorations Act, 1975, and other relevant laws governing national civil awards. According to her interpretation, these legal provisions do not permit civil honours to be linked simply to an individual’s administrative position, seniority or government employment. The letter further raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest. Kamran argued that granting national awards to serving government officials for routine administrative work could encourage a culture of favouritism and preferential treatment. She called for greater transparency and adherence to established legal standards when selecting recipients of national honours. The activist also invoked Article 5(2) of the Constitution, which establishes the obligation to obey the Constitution and the law. She argued that this obligation applies to every citizen, including the head of state and government officials. Kamran presented two key demands in her letter. First, she called for an administrative order to immediately withdraw the awards granted to serving bureaucrats and ministers included in the August 14, 2026 list where the honours were allegedly awarded for performing their routine official responsibilities. Second, she urged the Cabinet Division to issue clear instructions preventing officials who are merely performing their regular administrative and governmental duties from being eligible for future nominations for national civil awards. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Cabinet Secretary and the Cabinet Division in Islamabad for consideration and appropriate action. The matter has raised questions about the criteria used for selecting recipients of national honours and the distinction between exceptional public service and the routine responsibilities associated with government positions.
