Gold prices rise as weaker dollar, softer US data boost rate-cut hopes

Gold prices moved higher on Monday as a weaker US dollar and subdued economic data strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates unchanged at its upcoming policy meeting.

Spot gold gained 0.4% to $4,391.07 per ounce by 0248 GMT, extending its recent momentum after the precious metal reached a more than two-month high during the previous week. US gold futures for December delivery also advanced 0.3% to $4,448.10 per ounce.

The dollar’s decline provided additional support to bullion. The US dollar index fell 0.1%, making gold and other dollar-denominated commodities relatively cheaper for buyers using other currencies.

According to Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, gold began the week with strong momentum as weaker inflation data put pressure on the dollar and created room for bullion to approach the $4,400 threshold.

Waterer said a sustained rise beyond the $4,500-per-ounce level would likely require further weakness in the dollar or a clearer decline in energy prices.

US economic data shape rate expectations

Recent US economic indicators have played a major role in reshaping expectations for Federal Reserve policy. An unexpected contraction in US nonfarm payrolls in July, combined with relatively moderate consumer-price inflation, has reduced market expectations for an interest-rate increase at the Fed’s next meeting.

Data from the CME FedWatch Tool showed that traders were assigning a roughly 30% probability to a September rate hike, down from about 47% a month earlier.

Expectations surrounding interest rates are closely watched by gold investors because bullion does not generate interest or dividends. When borrowing costs and yields are lower, the opportunity cost of holding gold declines, potentially increasing demand for the precious metal.

Market participants are therefore looking ahead to the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s July meeting, scheduled for release on Wednesday. Investors will examine the minutes for indications about policymakers’ views on inflation, employment and the future direction of monetary policy.

Any indication that the central bank is becoming less inclined to raise rates could provide additional support to gold, while a more hawkish tone could strengthen the dollar and place pressure on bullion.

Geopolitical tensions remain in focus

Geopolitical developments also continued to influence financial markets.

US President Donald Trump’s representatives met Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators in Cairo on Sunday as diplomatic efforts continued to advance a proposed Gaza peace plan, according to a diplomatic source.

The talks were taking place against the backdrop of continued Israeli military operations in Gaza. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have kept investors alert to the possibility of further disruptions to energy markets and global trade.

Gold traditionally attracts safe-haven demand during periods of geopolitical and economic uncertainty. Any escalation in regional tensions could therefore influence investor flows into precious metals.

Other precious metals gain

Other major precious metals also recorded gains during Monday’s session.

Spot silver climbed 1.4% to $65.53 per ounce, extending its positive momentum. Silver tends to benefit from both investment demand and expectations surrounding industrial activity.

Platinum advanced 0.3% to $1,752.36 per ounce, while palladium rose 1.6% to $1,333.35.

    Investigators have uncovered new evidence in the mysterious death of Karachi resident Mir Raza Ali, whose body was found in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, as police continue to investigate whether he was murdered or died by suicide. According to investigation sources, CCTV footage obtained by police shows Mir Raza leaving his shop near Bahadurabad at around 3:30am on July 29 after taking a security guard’s pistol from a drawer. He then drove to his home, where he left behind his car, smartwatch, house keys, and Rs39,000 before booking an online taxi. Police said Mir Raza departed his home at 4:08am and headed toward Gulistan-e-Jauhar alone. CCTV footage also captured him walking by himself in the area. His mobile phone was switched off at around 4:22am near Johar Mor Hilltop, and he was dropped off in Block 2 of Gulistan-e-Jauhar at approximately 4:28am. Authorities are still trying to determine whether Mir Raza was killed or took his own life. Investigation sources said Mir Raza was involved in the digital currency business in addition to his other commercial ventures. He had reportedly managed investments for several people and regularly paid profits to investors. However, officials said his digital currency business began suffering losses in December 2025, with financial difficulties worsening significantly in April 2026. To cover the losses, he allegedly started borrowing money and eventually accumulated debts estimated between Rs50 million and Rs80 million. Sources further claimed that an overseas friend invested Rs7.5 million in his business but did not receive the promised returns. Police have also recorded the statement of Mir Raza’s fiancée. According to investigators, the two remained in contact until around 11:30pm on July 28. She attempted to contact him again at around 3:00am, making more than 40 calls and sending numerous messages within 20 minutes, but received no response. Investigators also revealed that Mir Raza had deleted all of his social media accounts before leaving home. He reportedly transferred Rs250,000 to his father’s bank account and carried the shop security guard’s .30-bore pistol with him. While police recovered the pistol holster from the scene, the firearm itself has not yet been found. Another CCTV recording from the area where Mir Raza’s body was discovered has provided a new lead. The footage shows a motorcycle arriving at the deserted location at 3:36am on July 29 and remaining there for approximately 22 seconds before leaving. Based on preliminary evidence, investigators suspect the body may have been dumped at the site during the early hours of July 29. They believe those involved may also have discarded the pistol holster at the scene, which could become a crucial piece of evidence. Police have expanded their investigation, using CCTV footage and other forensic evidence to identify and arrest those responsible while examining every possible angle of the case. Investigation sources also disclosed that Mir Raza had thrown away his mobile phone along University Road. The device was later found by three labourers working in the area. Police tracked down the workers and recovered the phone as part of the ongoing investigation.

    SBP to study daily fuel price impact on inflation

    ISLAMABAD: The federal government has directed the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to conduct a comprehensive study on how the daily revision of petroleum prices affects inflation, as authorities seek new measures to protect consumers from rising living costs and volatile global energy markets. The decision was taken during a meeting of the National Price Monitoring Committee (NPMC), which reviewed the country’s inflation outlook and discussed ways to minimise the impact of fluctuating fuel prices on households and businesses. According to officials, the SBP has been asked to prepare a detailed action plan within 15 days to evaluate the inflationary effects of daily adjustments in petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices, following international best practices. The central bank is expected to recommend policy options that could help maintain price stability while supporting economic growth. The committee was informed that the SBP’s primary responsibility is to ensure price stability through effective monetary policy, including the use of interest rates to manage inflation expectations and regulate money supply. Alongside the SBP study, the NPMC instructed provincial governments, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and the Islamabad Capital Territory to strengthen market monitoring and prevent unjustified increases in the prices of essential commodities whenever fuel prices are revised. The committee also expressed concern over excessive pricing of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), noting that consumers in many areas were paying significantly more than the official rates notified by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). Authorities have been directed to intensify monitoring and narrow the gap between notified and market prices. Officials said the recent regional conflict involving Iran had disrupted energy markets, contributing to higher LPG prices despite regulatory efforts. The meeting also focused on the prices of key food items, including tomatoes, chicken, wheat flour and edible oil. Representatives from the Ministry of National Food Security attributed the surge in tomato prices to seasonal shortages, explaining that Pakistan was importing tomatoes from Iran and Afghanistan to meet domestic demand. However, following the closure of the Afghanistan border, officials said additional tomato imports would now be sourced from Romania to prevent supply shortages and stabilise prices. To improve food quality and consumer protection, the Ministry of Science and Technology will work with the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) and provincial authorities to develop testing standards for loose milk, dairy products, edible oil and ghee. Accredited laboratories will conduct regular testing, with quarterly reports submitted to the NPMC. The committee also urged authorities to reduce wholesale and retail price disparities across different cities, improve the supply chain for essential goods and work more closely with the private sector to arrange timely imports before seasonal shortages trigger sharp price increases. Officials expressed hope that stronger coordination, tighter market oversight and evidence-based policymaking would help ease inflationary pressures and provide greater stability for consumers in the coming months.
