Houthi attack on Yemen’s Mokha leaves six dead

MOKHA: A Houthi attack on Yemen’s Red Sea port city of Mokha has killed six people, including two security personnel, according to a military official from Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

The attack, which took place on Friday, targeted commercial vessels unloading cargo at the port, raising fresh concerns over the security of maritime activity along one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.

The military official said the Iran-aligned Houthi group fired five missiles at the vessels. The strikes reportedly hit the port area and caused fires to break out aboard two ships.

The attack comes as tensions continue to rise across Yemen, with Houthi forces increasingly targeting areas controlled by the internationally recognised government. The latest violence has also added to concerns over the safety of commercial shipping operating near the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Mokha, historically known as Mocha, is located on Yemen’s western coast near the Bab el-Mandeb, a narrow maritime passage linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Its location gives the port significant importance for regional trade and shipping.

The latest incident follows a series of Houthi attacks in and around Yemen’s government-held territories and against commercial vessels. The United Nations has warned that Yemen is at increasing risk of a return to wider conflict, with military activity intensifying despite the fragile calm that followed the 2022 truce.

The renewed attacks have also raised fears of further disruption to international shipping. Maritime authorities continue to warn commercial operators about missile, drone and other threats in the southern Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb and Gulf of Aden.

Details about the identities of those killed and the extent of damage to the vessels were not immediately available.

The attack is likely to further deepen concerns about Yemen’s fragile security situation and the growing risks facing civilian and commercial activity along its Red Sea coastline.

Ahsan Iqbal called on representatives of the pharmaceutical sector to hold consultations over the next month and prepare a comprehensive roadmap for the industry’s development through 2030 and beyond. He said Pakistan’s objective should be to transform the country into a global hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and exports. The minister emphasised that Pakistan needed to secure a significant position in the international pharmaceutical market by improving the competitiveness and quality of locally manufactured products. He said cooperation between the government and private sector could help the industry compete more effectively at the global level. According to the minister, continuity in government policies and the creation of a business-friendly environment are essential for the sustainable growth of the pharmaceutical sector. He stressed that investors and manufacturers require predictable policies and a supportive regulatory framework to make long-term investments in production, research and exports. Ahsan Iqbal also highlighted the need to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported pharmaceutical inputs and increase domestic manufacturing capacity. He said approximately 85 percent of the raw material used by the pharmaceutical industry is currently imported, creating challenges for the sector and increasing its exposure to international supply disruptions and currency fluctuations. He called for strengthening the local pharmaceutical value chain so that a greater proportion of raw materials, intermediate products and finished medicines could be produced within Pakistan. The minister said enhancing domestic production would not only reduce the country’s import bill but could also improve the competitiveness of Pakistani pharmaceutical companies in international markets. A stronger local supply chain could help manufacturers reduce production costs, improve efficiency and develop products that meet international standards. He further stressed the importance of developing a coordinated strategy involving government institutions, pharmaceutical manufacturers, researchers and other stakeholders. Such cooperation, he said, would be necessary to identify the major obstacles facing the sector and develop practical solutions. The roundtable conference was held as part of efforts under Uraan Pakistan to promote exports and strengthen productive sectors of the economy. The initiative aims to improve Pakistan’s economic performance by encouraging investment, increasing exports and promoting sustainable industrial development. Ahsan Iqbal said the pharmaceutical industry had significant potential to contribute to Pakistan’s export growth if its structural challenges were addressed. He urged industry representatives to use the consultation process to develop realistic targets and identify measures that could help Pakistan increase its share in the global pharmaceutical market. The minister’s remarks come as Pakistan seeks to diversify its export base and reduce dependence on traditional export sectors. He said the pharmaceutical industry could become an important contributor to this effort by improving domestic production, investing in innovation and expanding access to international markets. The government, he added, would continue working with the private sector to create conditions that encourage investment and promote the long-term growth of Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry.

    Two labourers killed, Three injured in Quetta road…

    A Quetta IED blast killed two labourers and injured three others in the Wali Tangi area of Quetta district on Sunday, according to police officials. Police said unidentified attackers planted an improvised explosive device (IED) along the roadside and detonated it remotely when a pickup carrying a contractor and four labourers passed through the area. The incident occurred around 30 kilometres from Quetta. The victims were reportedly travelling to Wali Tangi for construction work related to tube wells. The powerful explosion badly damaged their vehicle. All five people were initially injured and transported to Civil Hospital Quetta, where two later succumbed to their injuries. Police and Frontier Corps personnel quickly reached the blast site, cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to identify and arrest those responsible. In a separate incident in Killi Raisani on the outskirts of Quetta, unidentified armed men shot dead former Afghan army commander Haji Hazrat Ullah, also known as Rorad Achakzai. Police said motorcycle-riding attackers targeted him while he was travelling through the area. The latest violence comes amid growing security concerns in Balochistan, where recent figures indicate a sharp rise in fatalities.

    Husband of murdered school teacher says earlier police action could have saved her life

      The husband of a school teacher who was brutally murdered in Faridabad, Haryana, India has stated that his wife might still be alive if the police had taken firm action after her earlier complaint against the accused. The tragic incident has sparked renewed concerns about the handling of stalking and harassment complaints and the importance of timely intervention by law enforcement agencies. The victim, 28-year-old Sandhya Sharma was a teacher at a private school in Faridabad. She was brutally killed at her workplace two days ago in a shocking attack that has drawn widespread public attention. Police have arrested 21-year-old Amit, who is accused of carrying out the murder. During the investigation, the suspect reportedly confessed to planning the crime nearly two months in advance and admitted that he had purchased a knife specifically to carry out the attack. Speaking to the media, Sandhya Sharma’s husband, Vicky Gurjar, said that his wife had previously worked at another school in Sirohi village where the accused had begun stalking and harassing her. According to him, the family had filed a police complaint regarding the harassment. However, he believes that if strict legal action had been taken at that time, the tragedy could have been prevented. Vicky Gurjar explained that he and Sandhya had entered into a love marriage and had built a happy family together. The couple had two young children—a seven-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter. He said the loss of his wife has devastated the family and left their children without their mother. According to police investigators, the suspect had been searching for an opportunity to kill Sandhya Sharma for a considerable period. On the day of the attack, he entered the school premises and allegedly called the teacher out of her classroom by using her husband’s name as a pretext. Once she stepped outside, he grabbed her by the hair and repeatedly stabbed her in the neck and chest. Police reported that she suffered more than 27 stab wounds and died at the scene due to the severity of her injuries. The investigation further revealed that Amit was allegedly obsessed with Sandhya Sharma and had developed one-sided feelings for her. However, she consistently ignored his advances and never encouraged him. Police said the victim had previously filed a complaint accusing him of harassment. At that time, the suspect reportedly apologized, and the matter did not result in stronger legal action. Investigators also stated that Sandhya later changed both her school and her residence in an effort to distance herself from the accused. Police believe this decision may have further angered the suspect and contributed to his determination to carry out the crime. According to police officials, the accused initially planned to attack the victim while she was traveling to or from school. However, fearing that he would be quickly identified and arrested, he abandoned that plan. Instead, he decided to commit the murder inside the school building, where he believed he would have a better opportunity to confront her. A senior police officer said the suspect was so enraged during the attack that he continued stabbing the victim even after the knife became bent. Police have recovered the murder weapon and are continuing efforts to locate the suspect’s motorcycle as well as the clothes he was wearing during the crime. Authorities also confirmed that the entire attack was captured on the school’s CCTV cameras. During the incident, the accused allegedly threatened a school employee who attempted to intervene and save the teacher. The CCTV footage is expected to serve as a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation. Police further stated that Amit is the youngest of three brothers. He was unemployed and earned a living by raising buffaloes and selling milk. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are collecting additional evidence to strengthen the case before presenting it in court.

    Sindh announces new school timings

    The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has issued a revised schedule for government schools across the province, outlining new operating hours for primary, elementary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions. According to an official notification, the updated timings will remain in effect from August until October 31, after which a separate winter schedule will be implemented from November 1 to March 31. Under the summer schedule, single-shift primary schools will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, while on Fridays, classes will end earlier, with schools remaining open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For secondary and higher secondary schools, the first shift will run from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until October 31. The department has also announced revised winter timings. From November 1 to March 31, single-shift primary schools will function from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., while the first shift for secondary and higher secondary schools will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Schools operating in double shifts will also follow updated schedules. Until October 31, the  second shift will run from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. During the winter months, from November 1 to March 31, the second shift will begin at 12:45 p.m. and continue until 5:45 p.m. On Fridays, second-shift schools will operate from 10:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The revised timings aim to ensure a uniform academic schedule for government schools across Sindh while accommodating seasonal changes in daylight and weather conditions.
