Lahore crime rate declines, DIG Faisal Kamran says

LAHORE: DIG Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran visited the Lahore Press Club and attended the “Meet the Press” programme as the chief guest. President Lahore Press Club Arshad Ansari, Senior Vice President Salman Qureshi, General Secretary Afzal Talib, Joint Secretary Imran Sheikh, Finance Secretary Salik Nawaz, Governing Body members Syed Sajjad Kazmi, Sarmad Farrukh Khawaja, Asad Mahmood, Syed Badr Saeed and Kamran Khan, along with office-bearers of the Crime Reporters Association and senior journalists, attended the event.

Welcoming the distinguished guest, Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari said that the police and journalists had a close working relationship and both professions were jointly striving to eliminate crime from society. He appreciated the tireless efforts and policies of DIG Operations Faisal Kamran, saying that they had contributed to a decline in the crime rate in Lahore.

Speaking to the media, DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said that in June 2023, as many as 9,149 incidents used to be reported in a single month, whereas the number had now come down to around 900 calls. He said tackling crime in any major city was a major challenge, adding that metropolitan cities such as New York also faced numerous challenges in this regard.

He said that the Safe City, CCD and Lahore Police had worked jointly to control crime. Safe City’s assistance was sought in tracing reported incidents, he added. He said that Lahore had witnessed a decline in its crime index compared with 380 cities around the world.

Faisal Kamran said that in 2026, major events including Basant, Ramazan, Sehri, Eid shopping and other public events, as well as Eid-ul-Azha and Muharram-ul-Haram, were held peacefully. Lahore Police continued to perform its duties during all these events, he added.

The DIG Operations said that, besides these measures, the accountability system within the police had also been strengthened. “Wherever there is corruption, I will take strict action,” he said.

He said that in 2023, Rs3.6 million had been provided for the welfare of police personnel, whereas Rs60 million had so far been provided for their welfare.

He further stated that during the past two and a half years, he had personally heard the grievances of 55,050 people at open courts, adding that 70 to 80 per cent of the complainants had expressed satisfaction with the resolution of their complaints.

The DIG Operations said that an MoU had also been signed between Lahore Police and the legal fraternity under which free legal assistance was being provided to deserving and underprivileged people. He added that Lahore Police was also taking strict action against usury and illegal money-lending.

At the conclusion of the programme, Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari and representatives of the Crime Reporters Association presented commemorative shields and bouquets to DIG Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran.

Police also completed the necessary legal procedures regarding the victim’s body before handing it over to his family. The incident has highlighted the serious consequences that can arise when minor disagreements turn into violent disputes. What reportedly began as a quarrel between children eventually escalated into an armed confrontation, resulting in the death of a young man. Authorities are expected to investigate whether the weapons used in the incident were legally held and determine the exact role of each suspect. Further details may emerge as the investigation progresses. Residents in the area have expressed concern over the escalation of disputes into armed violence. Such incidents can pose serious risks not only to those directly involved but also to nearby residents and bystanders.     PTI announces two-million march on Islamabad

    PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has announced that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will hold a major march towards Islamabad on September 27, claiming that two million people will participate in the demonstration. Speaking at the launch of a large-scale tree plantation campaign in Spin Khak, Nowshera, Afridi said PTI would continue its political struggle despite pressure and challenges. He maintained that government positions, wealth and political power were not the party’s ultimate objectives. According to him, PTI remained committed to the political vision of its founding chairman, Imran Khan. Afridi said the party had entered politics to promote the rule of law and uphold the Constitution. He added that the struggle would continue until these principles were achieved. The chief minister urged residents of Spin Khak and surrounding areas to participate in the September 27 gathering and support the party’s political campaign. During the event, Afridi also highlighted the provincial government’s environmental initiatives. He said authorities had initially set a target of planting 1.4 million saplings across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in one day, but the campaign ultimately resulted in around 1.7 million saplings being planted. He praised the Forest Department for exceeding the plantation target and said public resources were being invested in projects designed to benefit future generations.     PIMS denies CT Scan failure after Imran Khan’s h…

    ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has rejected reports that its CT scanning facility was unavailable after former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan was unable to undergo a recommended heart scan during his recent visit to the hospital. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the hospital administration said the CT machine installed in 2022 “remains functional” and continues to provide diagnostic services. Imran, who is currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail, was taken to Pims last week for an eye-related procedure and other medical examinations. Doctors had reportedly recommended a CT coronary angiography (CTA), a diagnostic test used to examine the coronary arteries and identify possible blockages. However, the test was not performed before he was returned to jail. The development prompted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to order an inquiry into reports that the required facility at Pims was not operational. An inquiry committee was subsequently constituted to establish the facts surrounding the missed examination. Pims clarified that medical imaging procedures are carried out according to clinical assessments, specialist recommendations, patient-safety requirements and established medical protocols. The administration also cautioned against interpreting the use or non-use of a particular imaging procedure outside its medical context. A senior Pims doctor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said approximately a dozen CT coronary angiographies had been performed at the hospital before the latest statement was issued. The controversy has also intensified demands from PTI leaders for Imran to be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. The Supreme Court had directed on August 18 that he be shifted to the facility. PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has questioned why the recommended examination was not carried out. He said a government-appointed medical board examined Imran on August 10, while a Pims cardiologist had recommended the cardiac scan earlier due to reported fluctuations in blood pressure, palpitations, headaches and restlessness, along with concerns related to his age and prolonged incarceration. Akram alleged that the test was considered medically necessary but was not conducted when Imran was brought to Pims. He further claimed that hospital officials cited the unavailability of the facility despite the presence of a functioning CT scanner. The conflicting accounts have placed renewed attention on Imran’s medical care and the circumstances surrounding the recommended cardiac examination, with the government-ordered inquiry expected to clarify whether the test was withheld for medical reasons or because of an operational issue.

    Tanweer Ahmed, a technology and artificial intelligence professional, has called for a human-centred approach to AI adoption, stressing that emerging technologies should support people rather than replace them. Speaking at the Youth and AI Summit at United Nations Headquarters in New York on International Youth Day, Ahmed delivered a presentation titled “Keeping Humanity in AI Adoption.” He focused particularly on how nonprofit organisations can use artificial intelligence responsibly while protecting human judgment and accountability. Ahmed said his professional background in technology consulting, data analytics and AI had given him experience in understanding the opportunities created by emerging technologies. However, he said his passion for the nonprofit sector was rooted in his earlier experiences working with communities and young people. He recalled working on a community farm and participating in cultural education activities in Cuba during 2007 and 2008. In 2010, he travelled to South Africa, where he taught mathematics to fifth-grade students. Ahmed said these experiences shaped his long-term desire to contribute to communities and help children around the world. He described his appearance at the UN event on International Youth Day as an honour and an opportunity to reconnect with those early aspirations. During his presentation, Ahmed discussed the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and its increasing use by individuals, businesses and nonprofit organisations. He explained that AI adoption should not simply mean occasionally using chatbots or other AI applications. Instead, organisations should strategically integrate AI into their daily workflows, operations and decision-making processes. Ahmed highlighted several areas where nonprofits can use AI, including internal productivity, communication, fundraising, grant writing and administrative tasks. He presented the Ugandan Water Project as an example of how AI can support a nonprofit organisation. The project works to improve access to clean water in Uganda and reduce the impact of waterborne diseases. According to Ahmed, the organisation uses AI to assist with grant applications and donor outreach. Previous grant applications and organisational information can be analysed to help prepare targeted applications for new funding opportunities. Ahmed stressed that AI-generated material is not simply submitted without human involvement. Staff review, edit and verify the content before applications are sent to funders. He said AI had also helped the organisation identify new grant opportunities and improve internal processes, including contract drafting and project-management workflows. Ahmed emphasised that the purpose of such technology should be to make employees more efficient rather than eliminate their jobs. He also discussed AI-powered voice-to-text technology used in social work and community services. Such systems can allow workers to record information while they are in the field and transfer it into required software, reducing the amount of time spent on administrative duties. Ahmed said reducing paperwork could give nonprofit workers more time to interact directly with the people and communities they serve. However, he warned that AI adoption also presents challenges. These include financial costs, limited access to technology, concerns over job losses, inaccurate information, privacy issues, bias and difficulties in understanding cultural and linguistic nuances. He also highlighted concerns about the environmental impact of the infrastructure required to operate increasingly powerful AI systems. Ahmed urged organisations to develop responsible AI policies covering privacy, security, fairness, transparency, human oversight and accountability. He encouraged nonprofit organisations to learn from one another and share successful experiences with AI, saying organisations working for social causes can benefit from cooperation rather than competing over technological approaches. A key message of his presentation was that humans must remain responsible for AI-assisted decisions. Ahmed warned organisations against blindly accepting AI-generated content and urged them to review outputs carefully, correct errors and ensure that technology does not replace human judgment.     Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has said that lasting peace in the province can only be ensured by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), stressing that no other force can replace their role in maintaining law and order. Speaking to reporters after visiting those injured in the recent explosion in Swat, the chief minister said peace is a shared responsibility and a common need for every citizen. He added that all political parties, religious groups, and people from different schools of thought are united in their desire to restore peace across the province. Afridi said the provincial government remains fully committed to its security policy and will implement it without compromise. He urged the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to stand together in support of peace and stability. He praised the sacrifices made by the provincial police and said the government is providing the force with all the resources it needs to combat terrorism and maintain security. Regarding the news published about the Anesthesia department at Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Kallar Syedan, the hospital administration has clarified that the anesthesia facility is continuing as before and despite the resignation of one doctor, there has been no interruption in the provision of necessary surgical facilities including operations to patients. The doctor who resigned did so due to personal reasons, while the process for the alternate appointment of a specialist doctor to the vacant post has been started. According to the hospital administration, two specialist doctors are still performing duties in the Anesthesia department. Dr. Abdul Qayyum is performing his duties in the morning shift while Dr. Zaid bin Saif, Anesthesia Specialist, is performing his duties in the evening shift, due to which the series of operations and other necessary surgical facilities in the hospital are continuing as usual. The administration stated that after the resignation of one doctor, three doctors have so far submitted applications to obtain NOC for appointment to the vacant post, and appointment orders are expected soon. According to the administration, until the new doctor is appointed, the provision of necessary medical facilities to patients is being ensured through the current specialists. The hospital administration further stated that the appointment of 10 doctors on a lump sum basis at THQ Hospital Kallar Syedan is also in its final stages, and the completion of this process will help fulfill the shortage of medical staff at the hospital and provide better medical facilities to patients. Regarding the ENT department, the administration stated that the said post has been vacant for the past two years, however progress has also started in this regard. Dr. Hassan Arsalan, ENT Specialist, has submitted an application to obtain NOC for appointment at the hospital, after which his appointment process will be taken forward. The hospital administration clarified that all necessary operations, treatment and other medical facilities are continuing uninterrupted at the hospital and no patient is being deprived of necessary medical or surgical facility. All necessary arrangements are being made to maintain the continuity of medical services through the available medical staff. The administration said that contact with the relevant authorities is ongoing for the appointment of specialist doctors to the vacant posts, and as soon as the NOC process is completed, appointment orders for new recruitments are expected to be issued. The hospital administration expressed its commitment that every possible step will continue to ensure timely, quality and uninterrupted medical facilities for patients.
