LHC grants bail to Libya boat tragedy suspect

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has granted post-arrest bail to Muhammad Tahir, a suspect in the Libya boat tragedy case, ruling that investigations into international human trafficking cases must be supported by credible and legally admissible evidence rather than mere suspicion.

Justice Amjad Rafiq issued a detailed 10-page written verdict explaining the reasons for granting bail. The court observed that allegations of human trafficking, being an international crime, require thorough and professional investigations based on concrete evidence.

The court noted that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) should have obtained evidence from abroad and sought legal assistance from relevant international authorities during the investigation. It said cooperation with foreign agencies is essential in cases involving cross-border human trafficking.

According to the written order, investigators should have collected digital and documentary evidence, including WhatsApp chats, call records, bank records, travel documents and other electronic data. The court stressed that such evidence is necessary to establish the active role of an accused in an alleged trafficking network.

The judgment further stated that the standard of investigation must be strong enough to legally prove an accused person’s involvement rather than relying on assumptions or incomplete evidence.

The court also highlighted the need for reforms to effectively combat human trafficking. It said stronger legislation, improved investigative methods and better law enforcement mechanisms are essential to tackle organised trafficking networks.

The LHC ruled that the transfer of money into a person’s bank account alone cannot be treated as proof of involvement in human trafficking. It added that suspicion, speculation or banking transactions by themselves are insufficient to establish criminal liability in such cases.

The court ordered the release of Muhammad Tahir on post-arrest bail against surety bonds of Rs500,000, subject to the conditions set by the court. The case will continue in accordance with the law while further investigation proceeds.

Who is Oleksandr Syrskyi? General Oleksandr Syrskyi is one of Ukraine’s most experienced military officers. He was born in Russia in 1965 when both Russia and Ukraine were part of the former Soviet Union. During his early military career, he served in Soviet forces before choosing to remain in Ukraine after it became an independent country in 1991. Over the years, Syrskyi rose through the ranks of the Ukrainian military. In 2014, he led Ukrainian forces during fighting against Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Syrskyi became one of the country’s most important military commanders. He played a leading role in defending the capital, Kyiv, from Russian attacks during the early weeks of the war. His leadership was widely praised, and he later received Ukraine’s highest national honour, the title of “Hero of Ukraine.” He was also credited with planning Ukraine’s successful counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region in 2022. During that operation, Ukrainian forces regained control of several key cities that had been occupied by Russian troops. Why was he removed? President Zelensky has not accused Syrskyi of any wrongdoing. Instead, he said the leadership change is aimed at improving Ukraine’s military strategy as the war continues. The US diplomat also highlighted the growing trade relationship between the two countries, revealing that US exports to Pakistan exceeded $1.5 billion in agricultural and related goods during 2025. She described the webinar as part of the US Mission’s broader strategy to promote stronger economic cooperation and expand commercial ties with Pakistan. During the discussions, Pakistani officials outlined regulatory reforms and policy initiatives designed to facilitate greater imports of American agricultural products, including soybeans, cotton, and high-quality planting seeds.
