New Delhi marks Pakistan’s Independence Day with zeal

Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic spirit at Pakistani diplomatic missions in New Delhi, Dhaka and Tehran. Diplomats, Pakistani communities and local guests participated in the ceremonies.

In New Delhi, the Pakistan High Commission organised a special Independence Day ceremony. Chargé d’Affaires Saad Ahmad Waraich attended the event along with officers, staff members and their families.

Waraich hoisted the national flag at the Chancery lawn. The national anthem was played after the flag-hoisting ceremony. Messages from President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were also read out.

In his address, Waraich highlighted the importance of the Two-Nation Theory. He said the creation of Pakistan fulfilled the longstanding desire of Muslims of the subcontinent to determine their own political future. He also paid tribute to the sacrifices made during the Pakistan Movement.

Children took part in the New Delhi celebrations. They performed national songs and presented colourful tableaux. Their performances added to the festive atmosphere and reflected their patriotic spirit.

Independence Day was also celebrated at the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka. Pakistan High Commissioner Imran Haider hoisted the national flag. The national anthem was played on the occasion.

A large number of Pakistanis living in Bangladesh attended the ceremony. Bangladeshi friends also participated. Students, journalists and representatives of civil society were among the guests.

Messages from President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar were read out during the Dhaka ceremony. The messages highlighted Pakistan’s national progress, unity and commitment to peace.

The high commission also organised an essay-writing competition for Bangladeshi students. The competition was titled “Historical Places of Pakistan”. Prizes and certificates were distributed among the students who participated in the activity.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Independence Day was marked at Pakistan House in Tehran. A flag-hoisting ceremony was held in the Iranian capital. A large number of members of the Pakistani community attended the event.

The national flag was hoisted during the ceremony. Participants also celebrated the occasion by cutting a cake. The atmosphere reflected the community’s enthusiasm for Pakistan’s Independence Day.

The Pakistani ambassador in Tehran read out the messages of the President and Prime Minister. He also highlighted the contribution of the Pakistani community to relations between Pakistan and Iran.

The ambassador said the Pakistani community was playing an important role in strengthening people-to-people ties between the two countries. He said Pakistan and Iran were committed to increasing bilateral trade to $10 billion.

    Eight killed, 37 injured as heavy rains lash Punja…

    Heavy rain and strong winds caused widespread destruction across Punjab over the past 24 hours, leaving at least eight people dead and 37 others injured in a series of weather-related incidents, according to the Emergency Services Department. Rescue Punjab said most of the casualties occurred after roofs, walls, and sheds collapsed due to intense rainfall and powerful windstorms. Emergency teams responded to dozens of incidents across the province and carried out rescue and relief operations. Gujranwala was among the worst-affected districts. Rescue officials reported eight separate incidents of roof and wall collapses. Three people lost their lives, while 14 others suffered injuries. Rescue teams shifted the injured to nearby hospitals and cleared debris from the affected areas. In Kamoke, a tragic incident claimed the life of a child who drowned after falling into rainwater accumulated in an underpass. Authorities urged parents to keep children away from flooded roads and underpasses during heavy rainfall. In Pakpattan, two people were killed and two others injured when the mud roof of a house collapsed following continuous rain. Rescue workers reached the site and recovered the victims from the rubble before shifting the injured for medical treatment. In Sahiwal, a woman died after the roof of a house collapsed in Kot Khadim Ali Shah. In another incident in Harappa, three people were injured when the roof of a shop caved in during the storm. Lahore also witnessed damage as a roof collapsed near Gulshan-e-Ravi on Band Road, injuring four people. Rescue teams provided first aid and transported the injured to hospital. In Mandi Bahauddin, several villages reported roof and wall collapses. Eight people sustained injuries in separate incidents caused by the severe weather. In Bahawalnagar, one person was injured after a shed collapsed near Al-Jannat Chowk on Khan Baba Road. Three more people were injured in Sialkot when the roof of a structure gave way during the rainfall. Rescue officials also reported partial landslides and incidents of fallen trees in the hilly areas of Murree and Kahuta. Emergency teams remained on alert to clear roads and respond to any further emergencies.

The medico-legal officer (MLO) examined the body and submitted the report to the police surgeon, who kept it for two days before it was released. According to the police chief, the police surgeon neither personally examined the body nor conducted the medical examination, and any reservations about the findings should have been communicated to investigators without delay. Azad Khan said police based their early investigation on the preliminary medico-legal report provided by the MLO. He added that confirmation of gunpowder residue on the deceased’s hands was also essential to the investigation. The police chief said the Crime Scene Unit collected evidence from the scene and handed all relevant material over to the medical team. He also questioned why the medical team did not visit the crime scene, noting that in many countries medical experts inspect the scene themselves, particularly in high-profile cases. He said that if Mir Raza’s family requests it, another medical examination can be conducted. Meanwhile, investigators are looking into the disappearance of the weapon believed to be linked to the case. Azad Khan also confirmed that police are searching for a waste collector seen in a video recorded near the scene. He said locating the missing weapon could help investigators resolve key questions surrounding Mir Raza’s death. The investigation remains ongoing, with police continuing to gather evidence and examine all possible leads.
