Nick Reiner denied $1.5 million trust fund access

Nick Reiner has suffered another legal and financial setback following his indictment in connection with the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Reiner. The 32-year-old writer is reportedly being denied access to a trust fund worth more than $1.5 million as he prepares to fight the serious criminal charges against him.

According to a report published on Saturday, August 15, a new trustee overseeing Reiner’s trust has refused his request to withdraw money from the account. Reiner had sought access to the funds to help cover his legal expenses and pay for basic necessities while he remains in custody.

The decision is reportedly based on California’s so-called “slayer statute.” Such laws are designed to prevent an individual from financially benefiting from the death of someone they are accused of intentionally killing. The statute can restrict a person’s ability to inherit or receive assets connected to the alleged victim.

Reiner’s trust was established by his parents after his birth in 1993 and is now valued at more than $1.5 million. In a court filing, Reiner claimed that he was expected to receive half of the trust once he reached the age of 30. However, he said that the money had never been transferred to him.

He is now seeking access to the funds, arguing that they are needed to pay his attorneys and support himself while incarcerated. His request reportedly includes money for his commissary account, which he said would allow him to purchase everyday necessities such as socks and personal hygiene products.

The dispute over the trust comes shortly after prosecutors secured an indictment against Reiner in the deaths of his parents. On Wednesday, August 12, a Los Angeles grand jury reportedly indicted him on two counts of first-degree murder.

The charges relate to the deaths of Rob and Michelle Reiner. Prosecutors presented evidence to the grand jury, which ultimately determined that there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed toward trial.

The indictment also reportedly includes a special circumstance allegation of “lying in wait.” Prosecutors allege that Reiner deliberately waited for his parents before attacking them when they were vulnerable or unaware.

The additional allegation could significantly increase the potential consequences if Reiner is ultimately convicted. Depending on how the case proceeds and the applicable sentencing rules, a conviction involving such circumstances could expose him to extremely severe punishment, including life imprisonment without parole or potentially the death penalty.

For now, Reiner remains entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the allegations against him have yet to be proven in court. His ongoing legal battle now involves not only the murder charges but also an effort to gain access to the substantial trust established by his parents.

      Sindh government spokesperson Sadia Javed has accused Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman of distorting the context of what she described as sincere national agreements reached in the past. In a statement issued from Karachi, Sadia Javed said that Hafiz Naeem was presenting previous national agreements in a misleading manner. She criticised the Jamaat-e-Islami leader for allegedly attempting to portray past understandings between political stakeholders in a way that did not reflect their original spirit or context. She questioned Hafiz Naeem’s position on electricity generated from Thar coal, asking why he remained silent about what she described as some of the cheapest electricity being produced through the country’s indigenous coal resources. “Why is Hafiz Naeem silent on the inexpensive electricity generated from Thar coal?” she questioned, while responding to his criticism of the Sindh government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Sadia Javed also strongly rejected what she described as allegations against the Sindh government, saying that Hafiz Naeem had no justification for issuing what she termed “mafia certificates” to others. She challenged the Jamaat-e-Islami leader to examine his own political record before making accusations against others. According to her, political leaders should first reflect on their own actions and positions before questioning the credibility or performance of others. The Sindh government spokesperson further defended the provincial government’s policies and highlighted the importance of Thar coal in meeting Pakistan’s energy requirements. She suggested that criticism of the provincial government should be based on facts and a complete understanding of the agreements and projects under discussion. Ghanhor Khan said that making accusations against the PPP over the issue of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) was part of what he called Jamaat-e-Islami’s unsuccessful political strategy. He argued that the party was attempting to use the controversial issue of IPPs to create political pressure against the PPP and the Sindh government. The dispute comes amid renewed political debate over Pakistan’s electricity sector, particularly the cost of power generation, agreements with IPPs and the role of domestic energy resources.     The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday granted transit pre-arrest bail to Noreen Niazi, sister of incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, in a case registered under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) 2016. The court directed Niazi to approach the relevant Islamabad court by August 20 for further legal proceedings. Her protective relief will remain effective until that date. Justice Arshad Ali heard Niazi’s petition. Her legal team included Ali Zaman, Amir Zeb and Barrister Sarwar Muzaffar Shah. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) registered the case in Islamabad on July 27. Niazi has been accused of making allegedly derogatory and inflammatory remarks about state institutions during a podcast and in video clips later circulated on social media. Her lawyers rejected the allegations and maintained that she had been falsely implicated. They argued that the case was politically motivated and that the authorities had not presented substantial evidence linking her to the alleged offences. The defence further claimed that attempts were being made to arrest and harass Niazi. The lawyers said the statements cited in the case had been taken out of context and wrongly interpreted. In its order, the PHC observed that the request for transit bail deserved consideration. The court subsequently granted interim protection subject to bail bonds of Rs80,000 and two sureties. Niazi later spoke to reporters and said she became aware of the case after arriving in Peshawar. She claimed that remarks she had made privately were allegedly passed on to authorities and subsequently became the basis of the case. She also alleged that several cases had been registered against members of Imran Khan’s family. Niazi questioned the allegations against her, saying she had never visited Peshawar and therefore had no involvement in matters concerning the province. The case emerged after the NCCIA summoned Niazi on July 20 over allegations involving the dissemination of what the agency described as false, offensive and inflammatory content concerning state institutions. The action followed the circulation of a video interview in which Niazi discussed the Pakistan-India military confrontation of last year. She made allegations about the circumstances surrounding the conflict and questioned the motives behind it. She also made claims involving Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israel and US President Donald Trump.
