Nick Reiner denied $1.5 million trust fund access

Nick Reiner has suffered another legal and financial setback following his indictment in connection with the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Reiner. The 32-year-old writer is reportedly being denied access to a trust fund worth more than $1.5 million as he prepares to fight the serious criminal charges against him.

According to a report published on Saturday, August 15, a new trustee overseeing Reiner’s trust has refused his request to withdraw money from the account. Reiner had sought access to the funds to help cover his legal expenses and pay for basic necessities while he remains in custody.

The decision is reportedly based on California’s so-called “slayer statute.” Such laws are designed to prevent an individual from financially benefiting from the death of someone they are accused of intentionally killing. The statute can restrict a person’s ability to inherit or receive assets connected to the alleged victim.

Reiner’s trust was established by his parents after his birth in 1993 and is now valued at more than $1.5 million. In a court filing, Reiner claimed that he was expected to receive half of the trust once he reached the age of 30. However, he said that the money had never been transferred to him.

He is now seeking access to the funds, arguing that they are needed to pay his attorneys and support himself while incarcerated. His request reportedly includes money for his commissary account, which he said would allow him to purchase everyday necessities such as socks and personal hygiene products.

The dispute over the trust comes shortly after prosecutors secured an indictment against Reiner in the deaths of his parents. On Wednesday, August 12, a Los Angeles grand jury reportedly indicted him on two counts of first-degree murder.

The charges relate to the deaths of Rob and Michelle Reiner. Prosecutors presented evidence to the grand jury, which ultimately determined that there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed toward trial.

The indictment also reportedly includes a special circumstance allegation of “lying in wait.” Prosecutors allege that Reiner deliberately waited for his parents before attacking them when they were vulnerable or unaware.

The additional allegation could significantly increase the potential consequences if Reiner is ultimately convicted. Depending on how the case proceeds and the applicable sentencing rules, a conviction involving such circumstances could expose him to extremely severe punishment, including life imprisonment without parole or potentially the death penalty.

For now, Reiner remains entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the allegations against him have yet to be proven in court. His ongoing legal battle now involves not only the murder charges but also an effort to gain access to the substantial trust established by his parents.

    LAHORE: Secretary and Chief Administrator Auqaf Punjab Dr Ehsan Bhutta has urged Imams and Khateebs to play a broader role in promoting religious harmony, social cohesion and positive values, saying their responsibilities extend beyond leading prayers and delivering Friday sermons. Addressing the concluding ceremony of the 45th Quarterly Refresher Training Course for Imams and Khateebs at Aiwan-e-Auqaf in Lahore, Bhutta said the pulpit and mihrab were important platforms for the religious, moral, intellectual and spiritual development of society. He said 19 Khateebs from different parts of Punjab had successfully completed the mandatory three-month training programme required for promotion to the next grade. The course, he added, was designed not only to support professional progression but also to strengthen the participants’ religious knowledge, intellectual abilities, research skills and professional competence. Bhutta stressed that religious scholars must remain equipped to respond to emerging social challenges, changing societal needs and contemporary intellectual and jurisprudential questions. He called for greater emphasis on research, communication skills and modern approaches to religious guidance. The Auqaf secretary urged Khateebs to use Friday sermons, religious gatherings and public interactions to foster unity among Muslims, interfaith harmony, tolerance, brotherhood and mutual respect. He also called upon them to help counter sectarianism, extremism, intolerance, hate speech and divisions based on language or group identity. He said Islam promotes peace, justice, compassion, human dignity and harmonious relations within society. Religious scholars, he added, should present the teachings of the Holy Quran, Sunnah and Seerah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in a wise and meaningful manner while keeping contemporary circumstances in view. Referring to the growing influence of digital platforms, Bhutta said social media and other modern communication tools had become powerful means of shaping public opinion. He encouraged Imams and Khateebs to use these platforms responsibly to communicate the peaceful and universal message of Islam, particularly to young people and audiences around the world. He further urged religious scholars to contribute to efforts against misinformation, inflammatory material, hate speech and sectarian propaganda by promoting well-reasoned and constructive content. Bhutta said the Auqaf and Religious Affairs Department was continuing reforms aimed at improving transparency, merit and good governance in the management of mosques, shrines and Khanqahs. The department was also working to improve the welfare of Imams and Khateebs, expand their intellectual and professional training and enhance the quality of religious services. He said that under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s “Magnificent Punjab” vision, the department was stepping up efforts to strengthen peace, religious harmony, tolerance and positive social values across the province. He added that under the supervision of Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Akhtar Zaman, administrative reforms, departmental performance and public facilitation initiatives were being made more systematic, effective and results-oriented.

    The Supreme Court has issued a landmark ruling concerning women’s rights, declaring that a woman’s right to seek khula (judicial divorce) is a constitutional right and that violence against a woman exercising this right amounts to an attack on the Constitution. A three-member bench of the Supreme Court dismissed the jail petition filed by convict Waseem Abbas and upheld his death sentence. Justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakar authored the four-page detailed judgment. According to the judgment, women are fully protected under Articles 9, 14 and 25 of the Constitution, which guarantee their security, dignity and equal rights. The court said that anyone who uses violence against a woman seeking khula would face the full force of the law. It observed that killing a woman for exercising her legal right is an act of brutality and open defiance of the law. The Supreme Court further ruled that a convict involved in a cold-blooded and planned murder does not deserve any concession. The judgment also clarified that the testimony of relatives cannot automatically be rejected in cases involving crimes committed within the privacy of a home. The court said forensic evidence recovered from the crime scene provided conclusive evidence against the accused. The forensic examination established a match between the recovered bullet casings and the pistol linked to the crime. The Supreme Court found no legal or factual flaw in the decisions of the lower courts and upheld the death sentence awarded to Waseem Abbas. According to the case record, Waseem Abbas shot and killed his former wife, Shehnaz Bibi, on October 11, 2020. She had obtained a legal khula decree from a family court before the incident. The convict allegedly entered the woman’s home and killed her around 48 hours after she obtained the decree. A trial court subsequently sentenced Abbas to death and awarded him 10 years in prison. The Lahore High Court later upheld the death sentence.

According to data released by the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association, the price of 24-karat gold rose to Rs457,336 per tola, following the latest increase. The price of 10 grams of gold also moved higher, climbing by Rs685 to Rs392,091. The fresh increase in domestic gold prices came as international bullion rates also recorded gains. In the global market, gold was trading at around $4,349 per ounce, up by $8 from the previous level. Market participants continue to closely monitor movements in international bullion prices, exchange rates and investor demand, all of which influence gold prices in Pakistan. Gold remains a popular investment and a traditional store of value in the country, particularly during periods of economic uncertainty and currency fluctuations. Changes in international prices are generally reflected in the local bullion market after adjustments for the rupee-dollar exchange rate and other market factors.

    A Mexican judge has ruled that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence to formally charge Ángel Aguirre, the former governor of Guerrero state, with forced disappearance and obstruction of justice in connection with the 2014 vanishing of 43 students. Aguirre, who was arrested following new testimony gathered by a federal investigative unit, is accused of ordering the destruction of surveillance camera recordings that could have clarified the events surrounding the abduction of students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Teachers’ College in Iguala. Defence counsel denied all allegations, asserting that Aguirre was attending a high-level meeting at the time the recordings were allegedly transferred to him. The judge ordered that Aguirre remain held in a maximum-security prison pending trial. The indictment represents one of the most prominent legal developments in the case since the 2022 arrest of former federal Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam. Of the 43 trainees abducted on 26 September 2014 after commandeering buses for a protest, the remains of only three have been positively identified.
