Karoline Leavitt to leave White House press post

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her position at the end of August, saying she wants to spend more time with her young children. Trump praised the 28-year-old spokesperson as one of his most trusted aides and said he respected her decision to step away from one of the most demanding roles in the administration. In a social media post, Trump said Leavitt would continue to advise him from outside the White House and would remain an influential voice within the Republican Party. Leavitt confirmed her departure, describing her time as White House press secretary as an “honor and adventure of a lifetime.” She said balancing motherhood with one of the most demanding jobs in Washington had been both rewarding and challenging. After returning from maternity leave following the birth of her second child, Leavitt said she realised she could not give her two young children the time and attention they deserved while continuing to meet the demands of the press secretary’s role. Leavitt and her husband, Nicholas Riccio, welcomed a daughter in May. The couple also have a two-year-old son. She returned to the White House last month after taking maternity leave. Leavitt became White House press secretary last year and made history as the youngest person to hold the position. During her tenure, she became one of the administration’s most recognisable public figures and frequently defended Trump’s policies during tense exchanges with journalists. Her relationship with sections of the US media was often confrontational. Leavitt accused some journalists of political bias, while supporters of the Trump administration praised her for forcefully presenting the president’s position. Her tenure also included changes to the White House press-access system. Her office took greater control over the press pool and temporarily restricted access for the Associated Press after a dispute over the administration’s preferred terminology for the Gulf of Mexico. Before becoming press secretary, Leavitt had already established close ties with Trump. She worked in his first administration as an assistant press secretary and speechwriter. She later served as communications director for Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and launched an unsuccessful campaign for Congress in New Hampshire in 2022. Although she won a competitive Republican primary, she lost the general election to Democratic Representative Chris Pappas. Leavitt subsequently worked as a spokesperson for MAGA Inc, a pro-Trump fundraising organisation, before joining Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign as national press secretary. She became one of the longest-serving press secretaries in Trump’s two administrations, behind former press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The White House has yet to announce who will succeed Leavitt. During her maternity leave, several senior administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, took turns addressing reporters. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who described Leavitt as a close friend and role model, said her departure would not end their professional relationship. He said they would continue working together and expressed confidence that Leavitt’s career would continue to develop beyond her White House role.

Trump says US-Iran talks to resume Monday

US President Donald Trump has announced that fresh negotiations between the United States and Iran are expected to begin on Monday, saying he decided to suspend planned military action after being encouraged by signs of progress toward a possible agreement. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said discussions with Tehran would resume through diplomatic channels, expressing hope that negotiations could help prevent further escalation in the region. He did not disclose the venue of the talks or identify the officials expected to participate. Earlier, Trump stated that he had delayed what he described as a large-scale military operation after receiving requests from Iran and several key US allies in the Middle East to give diplomacy another opportunity. According to him, regional partners believed a negotiated settlement was within reach and urged Washington to avoid immediate military action. Trump said Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar had all encouraged restraint, arguing that continued dialogue offered the best chance for reducing tensions. He added that discussions were expected to cover issues related to the Strait of Hormuz as well as Iran’s nuclear programme. Despite Trump’s comments, Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed the planned negotiations. Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency rejected claims that Tehran had requested the United States to postpone military action, describing the assertion as inaccurate. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, however, said negotiations involving Oman over the future of the Strait of Hormuz were progressing toward a final stage, indicating that diplomatic contacts remain active. Trump also declined to set a deadline for reaching an agreement, saying his administration was prepared for different outcomes but preferred a peaceful resolution over military confrontation. The announcement had an immediate impact on global energy markets. Oil prices fell sharply in early Asian trading as investors reacted to the possibility of reduced tensions in the Gulf region. Brent crude and US benchmark oil both recorded notable declines following Trump’s remarks. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes, with roughly one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passing through the narrow waterway. Any disruption in the area has the potential to significantly affect international energy markets.

The president said the bravery and sacrifices of police officers serve as a lasting reminder of their dedication to protecting the nation. Police Martyrs’ Day is observed across Pakistan each year to honor officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and to recognize the invaluable contributions of law enforcement personnel in maintaining peace, public safety and the rule of law.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms forecast across Sindh ti…

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh has issued a province-wide weather alert after forecasting widespread rain and thunderstorms across several districts from July 23 to July 25. Authorities have directed all district administrations and emergency response agencies to remain fully prepared for any weather-related emergencies. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), strong monsoon currents entering the region from the Arabian Sea are expected to bring rainfall of varying intensity across Sindh over the next three days. PDMA officials said heavy rainfall is likely in Hyderabad, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sanghar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, Jamshoro and Shaheed Benazirabad. Residents in these districts have been advised to remain cautious and follow official weather advisories. Light to moderate rain is expected in Ghotki, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Sukkur and Khairpur, while Larkana, Naushahro Feroze and Thatta are also likely to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms. In Karachi, the weather is expected to remain warm and humid with partly cloudy skies. Authorities have also predicted isolated drizzle in different parts of the city during the forecast period. PDMA warned that strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning could damage weak buildings, electricity poles, solar panels, billboards and other vulnerable structures. Officials have instructed local administrations to take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of accidents and property damage. The disaster management authority has activated its monsoon emergency preparedness plan across the province. Dewatering pumps, heavy machinery and emergency equipment have been kept on standby to deal with urban flooding and rain-related emergencies. Authorities have also identified low-lying areas that are more vulnerable to water accumulation and flash flooding. Emergency teams will be deployed immediately if heavy rainfall causes flooding in any district. PDMA has advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain, stay away from electricity poles and unstable structures, and remain alert during thunderstorms. People have also been urged to monitor official weather updates and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.

CPEC 2.0: Pakistan, China shift focus to B2B investment

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China are moving toward a more business-driven model of cooperation under the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), with greater emphasis on Business-to-Business (B2B) partnerships, industrial development, exports and productivity rather than large-scale Government-to-Government (G2G) financing. The development emerged during a high-level Chinese delegation’s visit to the CPEC Secretariat, where discussions focused on strengthening industrial and commercial ties between the two countries. According to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Planning on Tuesday, the Chinese delegation was headed by Sun Dongsheng, Senior Advisor, Economic Affairs Press. The delegation met Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal, along with senior policymakers and development experts. The talks centred on ways to advance B2B and industrial cooperation under CPEC 2.0, reflecting a broader shift in the corridor’s priorities from infrastructure-led development toward industrialisation, exports, technology and private-sector participation. From infrastructure to industrialisation During the meeting, Ahsan Iqbal briefed the Chinese delegation on the government’s Uraan Pakistan economic transformation programme and outlined Islamabad’s priorities for the next phase of CPEC. The minister proposed closer cooperation with Chinese institutions, including counterparts of the National Centre of New Manufacturing, to benefit from China’s experience in advanced manufacturing, innovation, automation and robotics. He said Pakistan needed to strengthen its productive capacity and adopt modern technologies to remain competitive in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and prepare for the emerging Industrial Revolution 5.0. Ahsan Iqbal identified Pakistan’s limited export base as one of the country’s major economic challenges. According to the minister, repeated attempts to accelerate economic growth have struggled to generate sustainable momentum because productive sectors have not been sufficiently integrated with export markets. He stressed that the government’s priority was therefore to turn agriculture, manufacturing and other productive sectors into stronger sources of exports and foreign exchange. Pakistan seeks greater access to Chinese market The minister also called for greater facilitation of Pakistani exports to China, highlighting the considerable gap between the two countries’ trade potential. He noted that China imports goods worth around $2.6 trillion annually, whereas Pakistan’s exports to the Chinese market remain close to $3 billion. Ahsan said Pakistan needed to increase its presence in the Chinese market by improving production standards, competitiveness and the ability of domestic businesses to meet international demand. He expressed the expectation that CPEC 2.0 could help Pakistan address what he described as its “export deficit”, just as the first phase of the corridor contributed to addressing the country’s energy shortfall. CPEC enters a new phase Under CPEC’s first phase, China committed substantial financing to infrastructure, energy and other development projects in Pakistan. Nearly $30 billion was invested in infrastructure and power-sector projects, including independent power producers. However, the focus is now increasingly shifting toward private-sector-led cooperation. Islamabad continues to pursue financing for selected road and motorway projects, but China has yet to demonstrate readiness to finance the long-delayed Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway upgrade, which had previously been regarded as one of CPEC’s flagship projects. The latest consultations indicate that CPEC 2.0 is expected to rely more heavily on commercial partnerships between Pakistani and Chinese companies. The government has already been encouraging enterprises from both countries to explore joint ventures and investment opportunities in sectors including manufacturing, agriculture and mining. Ahsan Iqbal said recent agreements between Pakistani and Chinese companies showed that B2B cooperation was beginning to gain momentum. He expressed confidence that stronger business-to-business engagement would support the modernisation of Pakistan’s industrial and agricultural sectors while creating opportunities for investment, employment and exports. China stresses productive capacity Sun Dongsheng reaffirmed the importance China attaches to its longstanding relationship with Pakistan and highlighted the achievements of CPEC’s first phase. He called for further cooperation in industrial and agricultural development, particularly in strengthening Pakistan’s productive capacity. The Chinese delegation also stressed the importance of involving small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in bilateral economic cooperation. Greater enterprise-to-enterprise engagement, according to the delegation, could help create commercially sustainable partnerships and expand opportunities for businesses in both countries. The discussions also focused on technology transfer, innovation, skills development and the creation of stronger industrial linkages. Five Corridors aligned with Uraan Pakistan Officials also discussed the strategic relationship between the Five Corridors of CPEC 2.0 and Pakistan’s 5Es framework under Uraan Pakistan. The government’s 5Es framework focuses on exports, e-Pakistan, environment and climate change, energy and infrastructure, and equity and empowerment. The participants stressed that alignment between the two initiatives needed to translate into concrete economic outcomes, including new enterprises, technology adoption, innovation, employment opportunities, skills development, increased exports and higher investment. The delegation was also briefed on the progress achieved during CPEC Phase I and Pakistan’s priorities for the second phase. The consultations suggest that the next stage of CPEC will increasingly be measured not only by the volume of infrastructure investment but also by its ability to improve Pakistan’s industrial competitiveness, expand exports, attract private investment and create sustainable employment.

Heatwave pushes UK death toll towards 2022’s grim record

Britain is edging dangerously close to matching one of its deadliest summers on record, and the peak heat month of August hasn’t even fully arrived yet. The UK Health Security Agency reported that an estimated 2,877 people have already died from heat-related causes this year. That number is nearly twice the total seen throughout all of 2025, and it’s steadily approaching the historic high recorded back in 2022. This latest update comes as the country deals with its fourth heatwave of the year. A string of unusually intense hot spells has already driven temperatures to record-breaking levels in parts of Britain during May and June. The extended dry spell has also worsened conditions on the ground, contributing to a rise in wildfires across several regions. Breaking the numbers down further, most deaths occurred across two distinct periods. Late May accounted for 753 fatalities, while a particularly severe June heatwave saw that number jump sharply to 2,124, prompting authorities to issue a rare red heat-health alert. Even though these figures only cover a two-month window, they already surpass the total number of heat-related deaths recorded across the entire previous year. Experts studying the data believe that roughly 42 percent of these deaths can be traced back to the effects of human-driven climate change. That estimate has reignited concern among scientists and public health officials, who warn that healthcare systems and at-risk populations are facing mounting pressure as extreme heat becomes more frequent. The crisis is not confined to the UK alone. Neighboring countries have also been hit hard, with wildfires sweeping through parts of France, Spain, and Greece. These fires have claimed the lives of several firefighters, forced thousands of residents to evacuate, and caused major disruptions to businesses and travel throughout the affected areas. France’s national health agency confirmed on Wednesday that the country recorded 5,764 excess deaths between June 17 and July 2 alone. Germany has faced a similarly troubling situation, with its national health body, the RKI, reporting on Thursday that around 9,800 people have died from heat-related causes so far this year. As temperatures remain stubbornly high across Europe, health officials continue urging caution, particularly for elderly individuals and those with existing health conditions who face the greatest risk during prolonged heat events.
