Pakistan turns 79, leaders call for unity, reform …

ISLAMABAD: As Pakistan marked its 79th Independence Day on Friday, the country’s civilian and military leadership delivered a common message: the sacrifices that created Pakistan must now be matched by unity, institutional reform, economic progress and opportunities for its people.

Independence Day celebrations began across the country with traditional ceremonies. A 31-gun salute was held in Islamabad, while 21-gun salutes were fired at provincial headquarters. At the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi, a change-of-guards ceremony was also held to honour the founder of Pakistan.

The messages issued by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the armed forces focused not only on Pakistan’s past but also on the challenges shaping its future.

Zardari urges reforms and investment in youth

In his Independence Day message, President Zardari paid tribute to the leaders of the Pakistan Movement and millions who made sacrifices for an independent homeland.

He described independence as more than a historic achievement, saying each generation had a responsibility to strengthen the country and build on the work of those who came before.

Reflecting on the country’s security challenges, the president said the events surrounding last year’s Marka-i-Haq had demonstrated Pakistan’s desire for peace as well as its determination to defend its sovereignty and national interests.

He also paid tribute to members of the armed forces, police and law enforcement agencies who had lost their lives while protecting the country.

The president stressed that Pakistan’s security was closely connected with peace in the region. He said the country would continue using diplomatic channels to encourage dialogue, reduce tensions and support regional stability.

But the strongest part of his message centred on domestic development.

Zardari called for economic, social and governance reforms, better education, stronger skills development and greater opportunities for young people. He said Pakistan’s youth represented the country’s greatest strength and that investment in their education and abilities would ultimately determine the nation’s future.

For ordinary citizens, he noted, national progress should be visible in everyday life — through better education and healthcare, employment opportunities and greater economic security for families, farmers, workers and businesses.

PM Shehbaz highlights economic progress

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also called for national unity while highlighting what he described as economic achievements made during the past two-and-a-half years.

He said Pakistan had navigated difficult circumstances and moved towards economic stability, while remittances from overseas Pakistanis had risen by $11.3 billion over two years.

The prime minister identified information technology, innovation, industrial and agricultural development, employment creation, education and skills training as key priorities for the government.

He also praised the armed forces for their role during Marka-i-Haq and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defending its national interests, including its water resources.

Shehbaz pointed to the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye as evidence of Pakistan’s growing strategic importance.

He also reiterated Islamabad’s support for the people of occupied Kashmir and Palestine, while calling for diplomatic solutions to regional disputes.

Military leadership calls for unity

Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu also issued Independence Day messages.

According to ISPR, the armed forces paid tribute to Jinnah, the country’s martyrs, veterans, law enforcement personnel and citizens who had served Pakistan.

The military leadership reaffirmed its commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, upholding the Constitution and protecting national interests.

The message also stressed that Pakistan’s real strength lay in the unity and collective determination of its people.

As the green and white flags filled streets, buildings and homes across the country, the leadership’s messages offered a reminder that Independence Day is not only about remembering 1947.

It is also about asking what Pakistan can become in the years ahead — a country where security is matched by stability, economic growth by opportunity, and national strength by better lives for its people.

The shared call from the leadership was clear: unity, discipline and meaningful reform must turn the promise of independence into progress for every Pakistani.

Cardi B opens up about needing time away from musi…

Cardi B is making it clear that pressure from fans will not make her work harder. Instead, the rapper says constant complaints about her music are pushing her toward taking a much-needed break. During an X Spaces conversation on Tuesday, August 11, Cardi addressed fans who have criticized her release schedule and questioned why some of her songs receive music videos and more promotion than others. Rather than motivating her to return to the studio, the criticism appears to be making her want to step away. (People.com) Cardi explained that complaints have the opposite effect on her. She made it clear that she does not respond to pressure by immediately creating more music. Instead, she would rather take a step back and enjoy her personal time. The rapper also pushed back against expectations that every song should receive the same promotional treatment. According to Cardi, different songs can have different aesthetics, visuals and promotional plans. She does not feel obligated to give every release an identical rollout simply because fans want more content. Cardi also admitted that she has not been spending much time in the studio recently. The decision is intentional. She said she had already planned to take the summer off and wants to enjoy her life rather than allow outside expectations to control her schedule. (People.com) For Cardi, spending time with her family is also part of the break. She said that when fans are complaining, her instinct is to stay in bed and spend time with her children instead of rushing back into the studio. The timing comes after an extremely busy period in her career. Cardi released her long-awaited second album, Am I the Drama?, in September 2025. The 23-track project debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking another major achievement for the rapper. She then took the album on her first full headlining arena tour, the Little Miss Drama Tour. The 35-date North American tour began in February and concluded in April, giving Cardi another demanding stretch of performances and promotion. (People.com) Even while taking time away, Cardi has not completely disappeared from music. On July 31, she released “AH HA,” a solo single that became her 30th career top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart. (People.com) For now, Cardi appears determined to enjoy her freedom and return to music when she genuinely feels ready. Her message to fans is straightforward: complaints will not speed up her creative process. Instead, she is choosing rest, family and happiness over pressure — and she is perfectly comfortable doing things on her own timeline.

Turkish firm to begin offshore drilling in Pakista…

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has said Turkish Petroleum will soon begin offshore drilling in Pakistan’s territorial waters, a move he described as a potential boost for foreign investment in the country’s energy sector. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore on Sunday, Malik said Pakistan currently imports nearly 90% of its energy needs. Domestic oil production stands at around 70,000 barrels per day, while the country’s daily demand is close to 500,000 barrels. The minister stressed the need to speed up oil and gas exploration within the country to reduce dependence on costly energy imports. Malik said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir had tasked an international company with developing a comprehensive roadmap for Pakistan’s energy sector. The plan is expected to reach the national leadership in the coming months. He also said the government had stopped the flow of circular debt and was working to settle outstanding liabilities accumulated under previous governments. The minister announced that LPG tenders would open on Monday and said the government had also made arrangements to issue new gas connections to consumers. Malik said Pakistan’s next priority after recent strategic and diplomatic achievements was sustainable economic growth. He described the Makkah defence agreement as a source of national pride and said Pakistan had strengthened its position as a regional security provider. He added that cooperation among Saudi Arabia’s economic strength, Turkiye’s technological expertise and Pakistan’s defence capabilities could help promote regional stability. Discussing global energy pressures, Malik said the Iran-US conflict had created major challenges for international energy markets and pushed crude oil and petroleum product prices to unprecedented levels. Despite the pressure, he said the government maintained uninterrupted fuel supplies across the country and took steps to shield consumers from the full impact of higher international prices. Malik reiterated that the government would continue efforts to provide maximum relief to the public while working with limited financial resources.

Field Marshal Asim conveys US offer to Iran for Hormuz reopening

TEHRAN: The United States has reportedly conveyed a proposal to Iran under which Washington would ease its economic pressure and blockade measures in exchange for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to attacks by Iran-linked groups. According to a report by Al Arabiya English, the proposal was conveyed to Iranian officials during Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s recent visit to Tehran. The report attributed the details to a senior source and said the message was delivered as Pakistan continued its diplomatic efforts to help end the conflict. The source said Munir held a meeting with Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The meeting was described as “clear and decisive”. During the discussions, Munir reportedly called on Iran to stop attacks carried out by groups linked to Tehran. The Pakistani military chief also conveyed the US position on the need to restore conditions that could allow broader diplomatic engagement. According to the report, Munir also urged Tehran to resume implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding reached between Iran and the United States in June. He reportedly told the Iranian side that both Washington and Tehran had played a role in disrupting the implementation of the understandings reached under the agreement. The reported US proposal comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of the confrontation. The strategically important waterway is a major route for global energy shipments, and disruptions to maritime traffic have already contributed to higher oil prices and increased concerns about energy supplies. Washington’s reported offer links the reopening of the waterway with broader steps aimed at reducing military escalation. The proposal would also involve easing the economic restrictions and blockade measures imposed on Iran. Iran has repeatedly rejected demands that it reopen the strait without corresponding commitments from the United States. Tehran has maintained that sanctions and restrictions must be addressed as part of any sustainable settlement. The June understanding also became a key element in subsequent diplomatic efforts. However, disagreements over its implementation reportedly prevented the arrangement from developing into a lasting agreement. Iranian officials have accused Washington of failing to fulfil its commitments, while the United States has continued to pressure Tehran over regional security and maritime access. Munir’s visit to Tehran therefore comes against the backdrop of a difficult diplomatic environment. Pakistan has sought to use its relations with both Iran and the United States to encourage dialogue and push for a peaceful resolution to the wider regional crisis. The reported meeting with Rezaei could be significant because of his position within Iran’s national security structure and his links to the country’s senior leadership. The discussions also highlight Pakistan’s growing diplomatic role in attempts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran. Islamabad has consistently called for a peaceful, sustainable and comprehensive settlement rather than prolonged military confrontation. The reported US offer has not, however, been publicly confirmed in full by Washington or Tehran. The details were attributed to a senior source by Al Arabiya English, and the next steps will depend on whether the two sides can agree on reciprocal measures. With the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions and attacks by Iran-linked groups remaining major points of contention, the reported proposal could provide a framework for renewed negotiations if both sides are prepared to make reciprocal concessions.
