Pakistani Mountaineer Sohail Sakhi’s body shifte…

The body of Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, who lost his life in a tragic avalanche accident on Broad Peak, has been transported to Skardu by an Army Aviation helicopter.

Sohail Sakhi was among the climbers caught in a devastating avalanche that struck Broad Peak in the early hours of July 31. The incident occurred during the night between July 30 and 31, when a massive avalanche swept across the mountain, leaving 10 mountaineers missing, including nine foreign climbers.

Following the accident, rescue and recovery efforts were launched in the difficult and dangerous conditions of the Broad Peak region. The mountain, located in the Karakoram range of Gilgit-Baltistan, is one of the world’s highest peaks and is known for its challenging terrain, extreme weather and unpredictable climbing conditions.

Sohail Sakhi was among the climbers who could not survive the disaster. His body was recovered from the mountain and later transported to Skardu, an important hub for mountaineering expeditions in the region. The use of an Army Aviation helicopter helped facilitate the transfer of the body from the remote mountainous area.

The tragedy has caused grief among the mountaineering community in Pakistan and abroad. Broad Peak attracts climbers from different parts of the world every year, but the extreme environment can make rescue operations extremely challenging. Avalanches, sudden changes in weather, freezing temperatures and difficult terrain pose serious risks even to experienced mountaineers.

The July 31 incident involved 10 missing climbers, nine of whom were foreign nationals. Rescue teams and authorities continued efforts to locate and recover those affected by the avalanche. The recovery operation was complicated by the harsh weather and the dangerous conditions at high altitude.

The bodies of seven climbers who died in the accident had already been transported to their respective countries. Their repatriation was carried out after recovery operations and the completion of necessary procedures.

The transfer of Sohail Sakhi’s body to Skardu marks an important step in the process of returning the deceased Pakistani climber to his family. Further arrangements will be made for the transportation of his body to his hometown, where his family and friends are expected to receive him.

The incident once again highlights the risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering in the Karakoram. Despite advances in climbing equipment, communication systems and rescue technology, climbers continue to face life-threatening dangers when attempting some of the world’s highest and most difficult peaks.

Sohail Sakhi’s death is a significant loss for Pakistan’s mountaineering community. His passing has drawn attention to the courage and determination of climbers who undertake expeditions in some of the most challenging environments on Earth.

Authorities and rescue teams remain focused on recovery and repatriation efforts following the Broad Peak avalanche. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of high-altitude expeditions and the importance of safety, weather monitoring and coordinated rescue operations in mountainous regions.

Karachi aerial firing leaves dozens injured on eve…

Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations turned tragic in Karachi after celebratory aerial firing injured dozens of people across the city. According to rescue officials, at least 86 people were injured in separate incidents of aerial firing on the eve of August 14. The victims included 59 men, 17 children and 10 women, highlighting the serious danger posed by the unlawful practice. (Dawn) The injured were transported to several major hospitals in Karachi for immediate medical treatment. Rescue officials reported that 24 victims were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, while 35 were shifted to Jinnah Hospital. Another 26 people were transported to Civil Hospital. One additional injured woman was taken to a private hospital. (PakTribune) The incidents were reported from several areas of Karachi, including Lyari, Saddar, Korangi, Malir, Azizabad, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Orangi Town, Jamshed Quarters and Defence. The injuries occurred as residents gathered to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day. While Independence Day is traditionally marked with flags, decorations, patriotic songs and family gatherings, the use of firearms during celebrations has repeatedly turned festive occasions into dangerous situations. Authorities have consistently warned citizens against aerial firing. Despite these warnings and existing restrictions, celebratory gunfire continues to occur during major occasions such as Independence Day and New Year’s Eve. Police also launched a crackdown against people allegedly involved in aerial firing in different parts of Karachi. (Dawn) The danger of aerial firing is particularly serious because bullets fired into the air can travel significant distances before falling. People who are completely unaware of the firing can be struck while standing outside, travelling through the city or even staying inside their homes. The latest incident also comes after a similarly tragic Independence Day last year. In 2025, three people, including a minor girl, were killed and more than 100 others were injured in celebratory gunfire across Karachi. Authorities subsequently arrested suspects and recovered illegal weapons. (Dawn) The repeated incidents have renewed concerns about public safety and the enforcement of restrictions against celebratory firing. What some people consider a form of celebration can result in permanent injuries, loss of life and lasting trauma for innocent families. Independence Day is meant to celebrate Pakistan’s freedom and national identity. However, the injuries reported in Karachi serve as a painful reminder that celebrations should never put other people’s lives at risk. As authorities continue efforts to control aerial firing, citizens are also being urged to celebrate responsibly. Fireworks, flags, music and family gatherings can create a festive atmosphere without putting innocent people in danger. The Karachi incidents underline a simple message: patriotism should bring people together, not leave families rushing to hospitals. (Dawn)

Gal Gadot says motherhood turned her into a ‘lioness’

Gal Gadot is opening up about how motherhood has deeply shaped her latest on-screen role. The actress admitted becoming a mother gave her direct access to emotions she couldn’t have understood otherwise. The “Snow White” star, who is a mother of four, plays a woman whose son gets kidnapped in her upcoming film “The Runner.” She reflected on the emotional weight of the role in a new interview with Modern Luxury magazine. Gadot explained that becoming a mother essentially turns a woman into a protector, almost like a lioness. She said nothing matters more than the safety of one’s children, regardless of background or beliefs. According to her, that protective instinct is something virtually every parent shares. She described the fear of being unable to protect your child as one of the deepest fears any mother carries. Gadot said that exact fear defines her character Maia’s journey throughout the film. She explained that Maia is not portrayed as a superhero with all the answers. Instead, she said, Maia makes mistakes, doubts herself and often feels scared. Despite that, Gadot noted, her character keeps pushing forward regardless of the fear she’s carrying. She said that quality is what she personally finds most inspiring about the role. According to Gadot, real courage is not about being fearless, but about continuing forward even while afraid. The “Wonder Woman” star also spoke more broadly about how motherhood has shaped her as a performer. She described it as the deepest emotional well she has access to as an actress. Gadot explained that motherhood gives her emotional insight that simply can not be reached through logic or preparation alone. She said those feelings are something you can only truly access by living through them yourself. Her comments offer a personal look into how her real-life experiences as a mother are influencing her more emotionally driven roles. “The Runner” is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, giving audiences their first look at Gadot’s latest performance.

Karan Johar credits Shah Rukh Khan for filmmaking success

Indian filmmaker Karan Johar marked the occasion of Guru Purnima with an emotional tribute to two people he says transformed his life and career—superstar Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Aditya Chopra. Through a heartfelt social media post, Karan reflected on the guidance, encouragement, and unwavering faith they showed in him long before he became one of Bollywood’s most successful directors. Sharing nostalgic photographs with Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra, Karan looked back on the early days of his journey in the film industry. He recalled a life-changing moment when Aditya Chopra invited him to assist on the iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. At the time, Karan was planning to continue his studies, but Aditya convinced him to stay back and experience filmmaking from behind the scenes. According to Karan, Aditya spoke to him late one night and urged him to work on the film. More importantly, he encouraged Karan to become a director, insisting that he had the talent for it. Karan remembered Aditya telling him that avoiding this path would be one of the biggest mistakes of his life. Those words remained with him and eventually changed the direction of his future. The following morning, Karan discussed the opportunity with his father, the late producer Yash Johar. He asked for one year to work on a film set before making any long-term decisions. Karan shared that his father questioned whether he understood the responsibilities of working on a set. When Karan admitted he did not, Yash Johar offered advice that stayed with him forever. He explained that technical knowledge alone could make someone a producer, but becoming a director required genuine passion and commitment. Karan acknowledged that Aditya Chopra believed in his potential at a time when he lacked confidence in himself. That encouragement gave him the courage to step into filmmaking and eventually direct his first feature film. The filmmaker also reflected on another unforgettable moment involving Shah Rukh Khan. During a trip to Switzerland, the actor confidently told Karan that he would one day become a director and that Shah Rukh himself would star in his debut film. Karan admitted he did not take the promise seriously at the time, assuming it was simply a kind gesture. However, after returning to India, Shah Rukh Khan fulfilled that promise. He stood by Karan and supported him as he prepared for his directorial debut. That support eventually led to the creation of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the film that launched Karan Johar’s career as a director and became one of Bollywood’s biggest successes. Concluding his Guru Purnima message, Karan expressed deep gratitude to both Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra. He said their trust, mentorship, and belief helped him overcome self-doubt and pursue storytelling with confidence. Karan added that every success and failure he has experienced in his career has been possible because of the guidance and support they gave him. He described the two as the greatest influences on his journey and thanked them for making it possible for him to tell stories on the big screen.

Homenet Pakistan urges protection of democratic ma…

Lahore, July 2026: HomeNet Pakistan, in partnership with AwazCDS/PDA, organized a high-level policy dialogue with Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs), including members of the Standing Committee on Local Government, to discuss legislative reforms aimed at promoting a stronger, more inclusive, and constitutionally compliant local government system in Punjab. The dialogue brought together parliamentarians, civil society representatives, and governance experts to exchange views on the future of local governance and explore ways to strengthen democratic institutions at the grassroots level. The session focused on ensuring political continuity, enhancing public participation, and improving the effectiveness of elected local governments.   Opening the event, Mr. Zia ur Rehman, Chief Executive of AwazCDS-Pakistan, highlighted the constitutional importance of Article 140A, which requires the devolution of political, administrative, and financial authority to elected local governments. He stressed that an effective local government system is essential for democratic governance and improved public service delivery. He urged the Punjab Assembly to introduce legal and institutional reforms that would safeguard democratic continuity, ensure the timely conduct of local government elections, and strengthen the autonomy of elected local bodies.   During the session, Ms. Ume Laila Azhar, Executive Director of HomeNet Pakistan, presented a set of policy recommendations designed to reinforce democratic governance at the local level. She emphasized the need for a stable and party-based electoral framework for local governments, noting that frequent legislative changes have weakened institutional continuity. She referred to the replacement of the Punjab Local Government Act 2022 with the Punjab Local Government Act 2025 as an example of policy shifts that have contributed to delays in restoring elected local governments across the province. She called for legal safeguards to prevent repeated delimitations and unnecessary postponements of local government elections. HomeNet Pakistan also recommended a transparent and representative mechanism for filling reserved seats allocated to women, youth, minorities, workers, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. According to the organization, such measures would promote broader democratic participation and ensure that local governments better reflect the diversity of society.   In addition, the organization emphasized the importance of returning key municipal responsibilities—including water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, and local infrastructure development—to elected local governments. It proposed that provincial and district administrations should primarily provide technical guidance and institutional support rather than directly managing these essential services. The dialogue was attended by Ms. Sumbal Malik Hussain, Ms. Fizzah Maimona Rao, Ms. Somia Atta, Ms. Rukhsana Kausar, Ms. Farzana Abbas, Ms. Nasreen Riaz, and Ms. Attia Hanif, alongside representatives from civil society organizations and governance experts. Responding to the recommendations, the participating MPAs appreciated the constructive engagement and acknowledged the importance of strengthening democratic local governance. They reaffirmed the Punjab Government’s commitment to transparency, institutional reforms, and democratic accountability, expressing confidence that these principles would continue to guide the ongoing local government reform process. The parliamentarians informed participants that the delimitation process had made substantial progress, with geographical boundaries largely finalized. They stated that the remaining objections were expected to be addressed by the end of July 2026. Following the completion of the statutory process, they expressed optimism that the election schedule would be announced, paving the way for timely local government elections. The MPAs also committed to sharing the recommendations emerging from the dialogue with the Honorable Speaker of the Punjab Assembly and pledged to advocate for legislative reforms that promote constitutional compliance, political continuity, and an empowered local government system capable of responding effectively to citizens’ needs. Concluding the event, HomeNet Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with parliamentarians, government institutions, and civil society partners to advance democratic governance, strengthen inclusive representation, and support the timely restoration of empowered elected local governments across Punjab.
