Pakistan’s Muhammad Zubair stuns Tekken 8 world championship in Paris

PARIS: Pakistan’s Muhammad Zubair has pulled off a remarkable victory at the Esports World Cup in Paris, defeating South Korea’s LowHigh to claim the Tekken 8 world championship and put Pakistan firmly in the global esports spotlight.

Zubair completed a dominant run at the tournament, held from August 5 to 8, despite narrowly surviving the early stages. His breakthrough came when the competition entered its decisive phase, where he produced one impressive performance after another.

In the second group stage on Friday, Zubair defeated fellow Pakistani star Arslan “Ash” Siddique, one of the biggest names in the international Tekken scene.

The two met again in Saturday’s semifinal, producing a tense battle that went down to the wire. Zubair eventually edged Ash 5-4, earning his place in the grand final.

But the final proved to be a completely different story.

Facing LowHigh, Zubair showed little sign of nerves and delivered a commanding 5-0 sweep to secure the championship. The emphatic victory transformed what had initially looked like an unlikely run into a memorable world title.

The Esports World Cup celebrated the upset on social media, posting: “He came out of nowhere and took the crown!”

Zubair’s victory also came with a substantial financial reward. The newly crowned world champion received $250,000 in prize money.

For Arslan Ash, the tournament ended with a fourth-place finish after he lost the third-place decider against Australia’s Yagami. Despite the disappointment, Ash remains one of Pakistan’s most celebrated esports players.

The Lahore-born star had entered the EWC after winning the 2026 Evo championship in Las Vegas in June. The victory marked his fourth consecutive Evo title, further cementing his status as one of the world’s leading Tekken competitors.

Zubair’s triumph now adds another major chapter to Pakistan’s growing esports story. His victory against two established international names — and particularly his semifinal win over Ash — demonstrates the depth of Pakistan’s talent in competitive fighting games.

The Esports World Cup features some of the biggest titles in competitive gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, League of Legends, Street Fighter and Valorant.

For Pakistan, however, the biggest moment in Paris belonged to Zubair.

After surviving the early rounds, overcoming his country’s biggest Tekken star and then sweeping a world-class South Korean opponent, Muhammad Zubair left the tournament not merely as a contender — but as the new Tekken 8 world champion.

    QUETTA: A targeted anti-polio vaccination campaign will begin on Monday across 62 high-risk union councils in 13 districts of Balochistan as health authorities intensify efforts to stop the spread of the poliovirus and protect children from lifelong disability. According to the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), the campaign will cover 209,557 children under the age of five. Trained vaccination teams will visit homes and designated centres to administer oral polio vaccine free of charge. Officials said 862 mobile vaccination teams have been deployed to conduct the campaign. In addition, 61 fixed vaccination centres and 72 transit vaccination points have been established to ensure that children travelling with their families or living in hard-to-reach areas are not missed. The EOC said the campaign is focused on high-risk union councils where the threat of poliovirus transmission remains significant. Health authorities noted that the virus continues to circulate in some parts of the province, making regular vaccination campaigns essential to prevent new infections. Officials stressed that polio is an incurable disease that can cause permanent paralysis, but it is completely preventable through timely vaccination. They urged parents to cooperate with vaccination teams and ensure that every eligible child receives polio drops during the campaign. The EOC warned that every child who remains unvaccinated increases the risk of virus transmission within the community. Officials said even a small number of missed children can allow the virus to continue circulating and endanger other children. The campaign will be carried out in Barkhan, Dukki, Jaffarabad, Jhal Magsi, Loralai, Qila Saifullah, Nasirabad, Sherani, Sohbatpur, Usta Muhammad, Zhob, Ziarat and Mastung. Special arrangements have been made in these districts to achieve maximum vaccination coverage. Health authorities said supervisors and monitoring teams will oversee the campaign to ensure transparency, improve performance and address any operational challenges. Officials added that vaccination teams have been instructed to reach every household in the targeted areas.

    Pakistan’s trade deficit widens 26% in July as imports surge

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s trade deficit increased by 26% during the first month of the fiscal year 2026-27, mainly driven by a sharp rise in imports, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The widening gap between imports and exports highlights growing pressure on the country’s external trade position at the beginning of the new fiscal year. Imports increased by around 19% in July, with higher purchases recorded across several major categories, including food products, machinery, transport equipment, textiles, agricultural inputs and metals. According to the PBS data, the country’s food import bill reached $805.4 million in July 2026, equivalent to more than Rs224 billion. The increase reflects continued reliance on imported food products and essential raw materials to meet domestic demand. Among food items, imports of milk, cream and food products prepared for infants rose by 25% to $18.7 million. Pakistan also imported significant quantities of spices, soybeans, palm oil and pulses during the month. Sugar imports were also recorded during July, with the country importing around 112 metric tonnes, adding to the overall food import bill. Machinery imports rise sharply Machinery emerged as one of the major contributors to the increase in the import bill. Machinery imports jumped by 41% to $1.31 billion during July compared with the corresponding period. The increase covered a wide range of equipment used in key sectors of the economy. Imports included machinery for power generation, offices, textile manufacturing, agriculture, construction and telecommunications. The rise in machinery imports could indicate increased demand for equipment and investment-related goods across different industries, although it also contributed significantly to the expansion of the overall trade gap. Vehicle imports register strong growth Imports of transport equipment, including vehicles, also witnessed substantial growth during the month. The import bill for the category increased by 40% to $420 million. The increase in vehicle and transport-related imports added further pressure to the country’s import expenditure, particularly as several other major import categories also recorded double-digit growth. Textile-related imports increase Pakistan’s textile sector also recorded higher imports during July. Imports of textile-related products, including raw cotton, increased by 15% to $680 million. The rise in raw cotton and other textile inputs indicates continued demand from the country’s large textile manufacturing and export industry. Since the textile sector remains a major contributor to Pakistan’s exports, higher imports of production inputs can also be linked to industrial activity. Agricultural inputs and chemicals Imports of agricultural machinery, equipment and chemicals increased by 23%, taking the combined import bill for the category to more than $1 billion. The increase comes as demand remains high for inputs and equipment required by the agriculture sector. Higher imports of such goods can support domestic production but simultaneously add to the country’s foreign exchange requirements. Metals import bill also rises The country also witnessed a significant increase in imports of metals, including gold, iron and steel. Imports under the category increased by around 23%, while the import bill for precious metals alone crossed $730 million. The broad-based rise across food, machinery, transport, textiles, agricultural inputs and metals suggests that the increase in imports was not confined to a single sector. The latest figures indicate that controlling the trade gap will remain an important challenge for policymakers during the new fiscal year. While higher imports of machinery, industrial inputs and agricultural equipment may support economic activity, a sustained increase in imports without a corresponding rise in exports could place additional pressure on Pakistan’s external account.
