PDMA issues high alert as heavy monsoon rains claim lives, trigger flooding across country

Lahore: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a 24-hour high alert as torrential monsoon rains continue to batter large parts of Pakistan, resulting in loss of life, widespread flooding and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.

In Punjab, at least eight people were killed and 37 others injured after roofs and walls collapsed during heavy rainfall. Four fatalities were reported in Gujranwala, while a child drowned in an underpass in Kamalia after being swept away by accumulated rainwater. Three more people lost their lives in separate roof collapse incidents in Pakpattan and Sahiwal.
Torrential rains inundated streets, residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas in Sialkot, while low-lying areas of Faisalabad were submerged, major roads were flooded and traffic was severely disrupted. A woman and a young girl were also injured after the roof of a house collapsed in Faisalabad.
Heavy showers were also reported in Wazirabad, Kamalia, Hafizabad, Pindi Bhattian, Bhera, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Layyah and Dera Ismail Khan, leaving roads and streets submerged.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of flash floods in hill torrents and seasonal streams, while urban flooding remains a significant concern in Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara and Sahiwal over the next 48 hours.
According to official rainfall data, Gujranwala received 142 millimetres of rain, followed by Mandi Bahauddin with 133 millimetres, Narowal with 95 millimetres, Sialkot with 85 millimetres and Hafizabad with 70 millimetres.
In Lahore, two people were killed and two others, including a woman and a young child, sustained injuries when the roof of a house collapsed in (Kot Babu Khan) Raiwind. The roof, reportedly constructed with wooden beams, gave way during the heavy downpour.
Rainfall was also recorded across several areas of Lahore, including Lahore High Court, Kalma Chowk, Mall Road, Ring Road, Model Town, Hamdard Chowk, Gulshan Ravi and Samanabad, where the highest rainfall of 4.2 millimetres was recorded.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, at least 14 people have lost their lives and 19 others have been injured in rain-related incidents. The victims include six children and two women. According to the PDMA, six houses were completely destroyed, while 22 others sustained partial damage.
Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain visited the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), where NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider briefed him on preparedness measures and the risks associated with the ongoing monsoon season.
Authorities also reported low-level flooding in the Jhelum, Sutlej, Ravi and Chenab rivers, although water levels remain within their channels.
PMD official Dr. Irfan Virk said the weather advisory issued for July 18-25 had already warned of widespread monsoon activity. He said heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next two days, particularly in Mansehra, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Chitral, Battagram, Kohistan, Peshawar, Swabi, Mardan, Kurram, Kohat, Karak and Dera Ismail Khan.
Officials said the current weather system is expected to persist over central Pakistan for another two days before gradually weakening. Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone areas and follow official safety advisories due to the continued risk of flooding, structural collapses and other rain-related hazards.

    Capital one defends closure of Trump organization accounts

    Capital One Financial has responded to a lawsuit filed over its decision to close bank accounts linked to the Trump Organization, arguing that the move was based on internal anti-money laundering reviews rather than political or ideological motivations. The bank, in a legal filing submitted on Friday, stated that it closed the accounts following a detailed assessment conducted by its anti-money laundering (AML) specialists. The company argued that the decision was made after months of analysis and was consistent with its internal policies as well as regulatory requirements. The filing represents the first time a major bank has publicly connected concerns related to money laundering risks with its decision to end a banking relationship involving the Trump family business. However, Capital One clarified that it has never accused the Trump Organization of committing illegal money laundering activities. Instead, the bank said that the account closures were the result of routine compliance procedures. Capital One argued that documents presented in the case, along with the plaintiffs’ own claims, demonstrate that the decision was related to AML concerns rather than any attempt to discriminate against the company because of political beliefs. The dispute began after Capital One informed the Trump Organization in March 2021 that it planned to close more than 300 accounts associated with businesses connected to former U.S. President Donald Trump. The Trump Organization and Eric Trump, Trump’s son, later filed a lawsuit in March 2025 in a Florida federal court, claiming that the bank had unfairly “debanked” them because of political pressure and what they described as the company’s “woke” policies. The lawsuit alleged that Capital One’s decision was influenced by the political environment following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The plaintiffs argued that the bank wanted to distance itself from Trump and his supporters during a period of intense public and political scrutiny. A federal court in Miami has already dismissed two versions of the complaint but allowed the plaintiffs opportunities to revise and submit updated claims. Capital One argued in its latest filing that the amended complaint continues to contain the same weaknesses as earlier versions and fails to establish evidence of unlawful discrimination. The bank accused the Trump Organization of presenting selective information and relying on statements taken out of context. Capital One maintained that the allegations of political motivation were unsupported and ignored the broader circumstances behind the account closures. According to the bank’s filing, certain transaction patterns identified during its review matched types of activities that federal banking authorities commonly recognize as requiring additional examination. Capital One said its AML team followed established procedures before reaching the decision to terminate the accounts. The legal battle comes during a broader political debate in the United States over the issue of “debanking,” with some conservatives accusing financial institutions of unfairly targeting individuals and organizations because of their political views. During his second presidential term, Trump’s administration has criticized such practices and taken steps aimed at preventing what it describes as discriminatory banking decisions. The controversy has also involved other major financial institutions. Trump previously filed a lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, making similar allegations regarding political discrimination. During his first term in office, Trump also took legal action against Capital One and Deutsche Bank in an effort to prevent the release of his financial records to Congress.     Ukraine targets mid-2027 for prototype of new Euro…

    Ukraine is pushing to have a working prototype of a European anti-ballistic missile system, codenamed Freyja, ready by the middle of next year, as Kyiv presses its allies to accelerate development of a weapon capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. Davyd Aloian, deputy secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council and the official overseeing the Freyja project, said an international steering committee responsible for estimating research and development costs is set to meet for the first time soon. The project was formally launched two weeks ago at a summit in Paris, where leaders from ten European nations, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, joined roughly a dozen defense manufacturers to establish the anti-ballistic coalition. Aloian said the tight timeline reflects an ambitious target. He described the goal as producing a minimum viable product within the first half of next year, meaning a prototype capable of demonstrating early practical results. Ukraine currently relies heavily on American made Patriot systems, which remain the only weapon in its arsenal able to reliably shoot down Russia’s ballistic missiles, capable of traveling at multiple times the speed of sound. Deliveries of Patriot systems have been hampered by shifting political circumstances, limited stockpiles and lengthy manufacturing timelines. Russia has intensified ballistic missile strikes this month on Kyiv and the southern port city of Odesa, launching dozens of missiles that Ukraine was largely unable to intercept due to a shortage of interceptor missiles. Ukraine has offered to contribute a launcher and an interceptor missile to the Freyja project, which Zelenskiy said this month essentially needs testing at this stage. He has said he hopes to see the system operational within a year. Kyiv is counting on its allies to supply key technology, including modern radar systems, sensors and expertise in missile guidance and control electronics. Defense companies that have joined the initiative so far include Eurosam, maker of the SAMP-T interceptor, along with Leonardo, Thales and Saab. Ukrainian missile and drone manufacturer Fire Point, known for developing the Flamingo cruise missile, has said it will serve as the lead industrial partner on the project and recently struck a deal with German firm Hensoldt to supply radar technology. The Freyja system is designed as a lower cost alternative to the Patriot, a system many European nations also depend on. Other existing air defense platforms, including the Franco Italian SAMP/T and Germany’s IRIS-T, have not yet demonstrated the ability to down ballistic missiles. Zelenskiy has compared the Freyja coalition to a Lego set, describing it as a system built by combining components supplied by different defense industry leaders. Aloian said manufacturers have been asked to build a framework that allows interchangeable parts from different countries. He explained that the system’s open architecture means individual nations can select their preferred components, whether that means Denmark opting for a Danish made Weibel radar or Sweden choosing Saab’s technology. Organizers are also considering setting up a dedicated body, potentially structured as a fund, to manage contributions and ensure the project receives stable financing over time. Aloian said involving private companies directly alongside governments should help cut through bureaucratic delays, adding that the coalition is meant to function as a practical effort rather than a political one. The push for a homegrown European missile defense capability reflects a broader shift underway across the continent, as governments reassess their reliance on American weapons systems amid growing pressure to build independent defense industrial capacity in the face of a prolonged war on Europe’s eastern border.
