The government has announced a slight reduction in the price of petrol while increasing the price of high-speed diesel in Pakistan. The new petroleum prices will take effect from August 12, 2026, according to an official notification.

Under the latest revision, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs1.70 per litre. Following the decrease, the new petrol price has been set at Rs325.92 per litre.

At the same time, consumers using diesel will face a price increase. The government has raised the price of diesel by Rs1.39 per litre, taking the new rate to Rs382.25 per litre.

The notification was issued by the Ministry of Energy following the latest price recommendations under the petroleum pricing mechanism. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) determines petroleum price calculations under the mechanism established by the federal government.

The latest adjustment means petrol consumers will receive a modest reduction, while diesel users will have to pay more from August 12.

Before the latest revision, petrol was priced at Rs327.62 per litre, while diesel was available at Rs380.86 per litre. The new rates therefore represent a Rs1.70 reduction in petrol and a Rs1.39 increase in diesel.

New petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan

According to the notification, the revised rates are:

  • Petrol: Rs325.92 per litre, down Rs1.70
  • Diesel: Rs382.25 per litre, up Rs1.39

The revised prices will apply from August 12, 2026, under the government’s petroleum pricing mechanism.

Petroleum prices remain closely watched in Pakistan because changes in fuel costs can affect transportation expenses and the prices of goods and services. Diesel prices are particularly important for commercial transport, agriculture and other sectors that depend heavily on diesel-powered machinery and vehicles.

The latest decision comes as consumers continue to monitor fuel prices amid changing international oil market conditions and domestic pricing adjustments.

For motorists, the petrol reduction provides limited relief at fuel stations, while the diesel increase could add to operating costs for transporters and businesses.

The government’s latest notification has therefore resulted in a mixed adjustment for consumers, with petrol becoming slightly cheaper and diesel becoming more expensive.

The new Pakistan petrol price of Rs325.92 per litre and diesel price of Rs382.25 per litre will remain applicable from August 12, subject to any subsequent government revision under the petroleum pricing mechanism.

JI leaders criticised the government over the growing financial burden on ordinary citizens. They argued that higher fuel-related charges have contributed to increased prices of essential goods and made household expenses more difficult to manage. In Karachi, a JI demonstration was held outside the Governor House. Party leaders accused the government of relying excessively on petroleum levies and taxes to generate revenue. JI Karachi women wing leader Javed Fahim called on the government either to withdraw what she described as unnecessary financial burdens or face stronger public resistance. She warned that the party could expand its sit-ins to major roads across Karachi if its demands were not accepted. JI Karachi Emir Monem Zafar Khan said the party’s demands included a reduction in fuel prices and a forensic audit of independent power producers (IPPs). He said controlling inflation should be among the government’s top priorities and argued that ordinary citizens were bearing the impact of rising fuel costs, electricity bills and prices of daily-use commodities. The protests come after the government recently increased the petroleum levy on diesel by Rs1 per litre, taking it to Rs77.28. The levy on petrol remained at Rs80 per litre, while the levy on kerosene was unchanged at Rs20.36 per litre. JI leaders said they would continue mobilising supporters across the country and would consider further expanding the protest movement if their demands were not met.

    Lahore police have decided to conduct a polygraph test on an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in connection with allegations that a young woman was sexually assaulted at Ghaziabad police station. According to police sources, ASI Imran, who is currently in custody, will undergo the test as investigators continue examining the allegations and conflicting accounts surrounding the incident. Police said the alleged victim has already undergone a psychiatric assessment. The report from the assessment is expected to be received on August 18, while additional medical and forensic examinations have also been conducted. According to the police, ASI Imran has denied the allegations. He reportedly told investigators that he had brought the woman to the police station because she was allegedly involved in begging. He claimed that he did not assault her and instead provided her with food and counselled her before sending her away. Investigators said the initial medical report contains some ambiguity regarding the allegations of sexual assault. Police officials said a detailed report from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) is expected to provide further findings that could help investigators establish what happened. The case is being closely monitored by DIG Investigation Lahore Zeeshan Raza, who said he is personally supervising the investigation. He assured that anyone found responsible would be punished according to the law. Police sources said further tests of the alleged victim have also been conducted, but their results are still awaited. Investigators are expected to consider the medical evidence, forensic findings, statements and other available material before reaching conclusions about the case. The investigation is being conducted under the direction of DIG Investigation Lahore. A team comprising Ghaziabad Investigation Incharge Inspector Nasir Hameed, Gender Cell Incharge Inspector Fatima and Investigation Officer Faryal is working on the case. The decision to conduct a polygraph test on the detained ASI comes as investigators attempt to establish the facts surrounding the allegations. However, the reported initial medical ambiguity means that the final medical and forensic findings will be important in determining the direction of the investigation. Authorities have said that the investigation remains ongoing and that legal action will be taken on the basis of the evidence collected.
