PTI gears up for August 5 rally

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has stepped up preparations for its August 5 public rally, launching a mobilisation campaign to bring party workers together in Peshawar and other parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

PTI workers are holding meetings across the provincial capital, while banners and promotional material for the rally have begun appearing in different areas of the city. Party leader Zubair Ahmad Qureshi said workers from other provinces would also attend the gathering, which will take place near the Peshawar Motorway Plaza.

Qureshi called the event one of the biggest rallies in the province’s history and said PTI would observe August 5 as a “day of referendum.” He also said Chief Minister Sohail Afridi would make an important announcement about the party’s future strategy.

The PTI leader said party workers had prepared for a movement seeking the release of the party’s founding chairman and would not compromise on the demand. He added that the party had expanded its outreach campaign and started contacting members of the business community.

Qureshi said PTI would also observe August 5 as a Black Day and hold a strike. However, he stressed that the party would keep its protest peaceful.

He said he was informed about her transfer only after she had already been taken to the hospital. Responding to speculation about political contacts, Gohar denied having any communication with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi or PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He questioned the government’s handling of national affairs and urged authorities to explain what had led the country’s governance system into what he described as a “default mode.” Turning to the judiciary, Gohar argued that recent constitutional amendments had failed to improve the justice system despite the appointment of dozens of additional judges. He claimed public confidence in judicial institutions had declined and called for reforms based on consensus rather than political interests. The PTI leader further alleged that the ruling parties were considering administrative restructuring to weaken the opposition. He insisted that constitutional amendments should not be introduced without broad political agreement. Gohar also criticised the PPP, accusing it of remaining silent on national issues while focusing on political gains. He repeated PTI’s longstanding allegations regarding the 2024 general elections and challenged the PPP leadership to a public debate over disputed electoral seats, including constituencies in Karachi.       QUETTA: Independence Day celebrations continued across different parts of Balochistan as people from various communities came together to mark the country’s Independence Day with enthusiasm and national spirit.     SBP reserves fall $229m, gold prices rise

    The State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) foreign exchange reserves fell by $229 million in the week ending July 24, 2026, to $17.03 billion, mainly due to external debt repayments. Pakistan’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves stood at $22.4 billion during the week. The SBP held $17.03 billion, while commercial banks maintained net reserves of around $5.4 billion. Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee edged up against the US dollar, closing at Rs277.81 in the interbank market on Thursday compared with Rs277.82 a day earlier. The dollar remained stable in early Asian trading after the US Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged. Gold prices in Pakistan also increased, following gains in international markets. The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association said the price of 24-carat gold rose by Rs1,000 to Rs427,436 per tola. The price of 10 grams increased by Rs857 to Rs366,457. Internationally, spot gold gained 0.8% to $4,098.98 per ounce, while US gold futures for August delivery rose 1.4% to $4,097.70. The Federal Reserve maintained its current interest rates on Wednesday, while softer US inflation data reduced market expectations of a rate hike in September. Analysts, however, warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could put renewed pressure on inflation. Silver prices moved lower in the domestic market, declining by Rs76 to Rs6,215 per tola. Interactive Commodities Director Adnan Agar said the gold market remained range-bound. Bullion traded between $4,028 and $4,120 before settling near $4,107, which he described as a “danger zone.”

    The Peshawar High Court has rejected asylum petitions filed by two former Afghan military officers seeking temporary protection and permission to remain in Pakistan. The petitioners, Abdul Mujeeb Ghairat and Baryalai Sharifi, had approached the court after expressing fears for their safety if they were forced to return to Afghanistan. They requested permission to stay in Pakistan temporarily. They also sought extensions of their visas and protection from arrest, harassment and deportation. The former Afghan servicemen argued that returning to Afghanistan could expose them to serious threats to their lives because of their previous positions in the Afghan security establishment. According to court documents, Ghairat had worked as a special agent with the protective service of the former Afghan president. Sharifi had served as a general in the former Afghan National Army. The two petitioners submitted Afghan passports and other documents to support their requests. They also referred to their need for emergency medical treatment and temporary residence in Pakistan. Ghairat told the court that he had already submitted an online application seeking an extension of his Pakistani visa. After examining the petitions, the court ruled that the applicants had not established any violation of their fundamental constitutional rights. The court observed that fears about possible threats after returning to Afghanistan, without sufficient supporting evidence, could not by themselves justify intervention under Article 199 of the Constitution. The court also clarified that decisions concerning the stay of foreign nationals in Pakistan fall within the authority of the relevant government departments. It said matters involving the issuance, extension or cancellation of visas and immigration status are governed by applicable laws and are primarily handled by the executive authorities. The court therefore declined to grant the requested relief to the two former Afghan officers.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held separate meetings with the foreign ministers of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan. The meetings were held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting.The discussions focused on bilateral relations, trade, investment, regional connectivity and security. Dar met Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov and reviewed the progress of relations between the two countries.The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in several important areas. These include trade, investment, defence, agriculture, technology and workforce exchanges.They also discussed ways to strengthen economic ties and increase bilateral business activity. Pakistan and Belarus are also preparing for the next session of their Joint Ministerial Commission.The ninth session is scheduled to take place in Islamabad on August 11 and 12, 2026. The two countries are expected to use the meeting to explore new areas of cooperation.Dar and Ryzhenkov also discussed regional developments. The Belarusian foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to support dialogue and promote peace and stability in the region. Dar also met Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev.The two ministers reviewed the positive progress in relations between Pakistan and Kazakhstan. Tajikistan also expressed support for Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and the peaceful resolution of regional issues.Dar also met Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov. The two ministers reaffirmed the importance of the Pakistan-Uzbekistan strategic partnership. They reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation.Trade, investment, connectivity, energy, culture and people-to-people relations were among the key areas discussed. Dar and Saidov also stressed the importance of stronger links between the business communities of both countries. They said closer business engagement could help increase trade and investment.The two ministers also discussed the implementation of understandings reached during Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s recent visit to Pakistan. They agreed that existing agreements should be converted into practical projects through timely implementation.
