PTI leadership backs Sept 27 long March as KP CM r…

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership and the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) alliance are fully supporting the planned long march towards Islamabad on September 27.

Afridi said the date for the protest was finalised after consultations among PTI’s central and provincial leadership as well as its allied group. He stressed that the decision had been taken collectively and that the party’s leadership across the provinces was on board with the plan.

Afridi’s comments came after reports that Aleema Khan, the sister of PTI founder Imran Khan, had questioned why the long march was scheduled for September 27 instead of an earlier date. Responding to the concerns, Afridi described Aleema as a non-political person who was speaking in her capacity as Imran Khan’s sister. He said he was confident that he could satisfy her concerns by explaining the reasons and circumstances behind the decision.

The KP chief minister also rejected allegations made by some PTI leaders based abroad that he had agreed to the September 27 date as part of a secret deal with the government. Afridi said those making such accusations should have contacted him directly before discussing the matter publicly.

He said such allegations could mislead PTI supporters and create unnecessary confusion. According to Afridi, individuals who were genuinely sincere with Imran Khan and the party should first seek clarification before making accusations against fellow party leaders.

Responding to a specific allegation that he had met Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and another government official on August 4 before announcing the date of the long march, Afridi categorically denied the claim. He described the allegation as completely baseless and said he had been present at the KP House in Islamabad from noon until around 4:30pm that day.

Afridi explained that he had been attending meetings related to the province’s Pado KP and telemedicine initiatives during that period. He also rejected the suggestion that the alleged meeting had taken place in Peshawar, reiterating that he was in Islamabad at the time.

The controversy comes as PTI prepares for what its leaders describe as a major mobilisation aimed at securing the release of Imran Khan. A day earlier, PTI leader Shafi Jan said the party had no option left except to launch the long march, which he described as its “last option”.

Jan said PTI workers were protesting because they believed their concerns were not being heard. He claimed that the party would march from Peshawar towards Islamabad with around two million people and said the demonstration would have an impact across the country.

Imran Khan, 73, has remained in prison since August 2023 following convictions in several cases. PTI has repeatedly rejected the allegations against its founder and described the legal proceedings as politically motivated.

Since his removal from office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022, Imran Khan has faced numerous legal cases, including those involving state gifts and his marriage. Although some of his convictions have been suspended or overturned, several appeals are still pending before higher courts. Imran Khan and PTI continue to deny any wrongdoing and maintain that the cases against him are politically driven.

Nearly 100 children wrongly detained as adults under UK-France migration deal

At least 94 children were mistakenly identified as adults and held in immigration detention under Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s “one in, one out” agreement with France, according to details disclosed in a letter from the Independent Monitoring Boards (IMB). Between August 2025 and May 2026, Home Office officials recorded 304 age-disputed cases arising from the scheme, officially named Operation Hillmore, with 31% ultimately confirmed to be minors. Standard UK policy strictly prohibits the detention of unaccompanied minors beyond 24 hours. The critical findings, sent to Home Office Minister Anna Turley by interim IMB chair Jane Leech, highlighted severe safeguarding and procedural failures. Age assessments at immigration removal centers took up to 40 days to resolve in certain instances, while some individuals faced deportation delays of up to 27 weeks, far exceeding the scheme’s 28-day target. Additionally, detainees were slated for removal despite requiring urgent hospital care or suffering from active tuberculosis. The Refugee Council condemned the findings, urging the government to rely on social-worker-led assessments rather than administrative border checks. In response, a Home Office spokesperson stated that age assessment procedures are being modernized, including plans to roll out AI tools next year to support determinations.

Gracie Abrams shuts down Taylor Swift feud rumours

Gracie Abrams has addressed speculation about an alleged rift with Taylor Swift, making it clear that there is no bad blood between the two singers. The 26-year-old singer spoke about Swift during a recent appearance on comedian Jake Shane’s podcast. Abrams was promoting her new album Daughter From Hell when the conversation turned to rumours surrounding her relationship with the global pop star. Rather than confirming reports of a disagreement, Abrams praised Swift and spoke warmly about the experience of working alongside her during the Eras Tour. Abrams described watching Swift manage the massive tour as a remarkable professional experience. She praised the singer’s ability to create a memorable experience for audiences, performers and everyone involved in the production. The singer also highlighted Swift’s professionalism and dedication. According to Abrams, the tour taught her that a major performance continues regardless of personal circumstances. Abrams said Swift’s commitment to her work was particularly impressive because audiences would not necessarily know if she was unwell or dealing with personal difficulties. She praised Swift for continuing to perform with warmth, grace and determination. She went on to describe Swift as an exceptionally talented and unique artist while also emphasising her human side. Abrams’ comments come after social media users began speculating about a possible disagreement between the two singers. The rumours gained momentum after Abrams shared photographs connected to a high-profile wedding celebration in July. Fans noticed that the photographs also featured Joe Alwyn, Swift’s former boyfriend. This led some social media users to speculate that Abrams may have been caught up in an alleged disagreement involving Swift and Alwyn. The speculation intensified further after fans linked Abrams’ recently released song Death Wish to the alleged fallout. However, there has been no confirmation that the song was written about Swift or any personal dispute between the singers. Abrams and Swift have previously shared a professional connection through the Eras Tour, where Abrams gained additional exposure while performing as an opening act. The latest comments from Abrams appear to put the online speculation into perspective. Instead of criticising Swift, she used the opportunity to praise her work ethic, professionalism and approach to performing. The singer’s remarks also suggest that much of the alleged feud may have been driven by fan speculation rather than any confirmed disagreement between the two artists.

YDA Sindh pushes healthcare reform agenda

KARACHI: The Young Doctors Association, YDA, is often seen by the public as violent, irresponsible doctors who take to the streets. But rarely does anyone see the other side of the coin. Behind the protests is a group of young doctors — the young blood of our healthcare system — fighting for their basic rights and for better patient care. Like whistleblowers in every society, they are rarely welcomed when they speak the truth. The Young Doctors Association is no exception. To the common man, YDA means protests, strikes, and chaos in hospitals. What often goes unnoticed is the reason behind it. These are young doctors, the backbone of emergency wards in Sindh, who are demanding dignity, security, and resources. In this context, Chairman of the Young Doctors Association Sindh Chapter, Dr. Farrukh Rauf paints a realistic picture of a system buckling under patient load, with too few specialists and even fewer resources to go around. From JPMC Member To Sindh Chairman YDA was formed in 2013 following an incident in which a female doctor was injured by relatives of a patient who had died. Since then, Dr. Farrukh Rauf has been associated with Young Doctors Association. He started as a member, was later elected General Secretary and then President of the JPMC unit, served as Senior Vice President of YDA Sindh, and is now serving as Chairman of the Sindh chapter. Dr. Farrukh Rauf, Chairman YDA Sindh, is a consultant orthopedic surgeon at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. He is currently the only surgeon at JPMC who performs orthopedic tumor and cancer surgeries — a super-specialty that only 4 to 5 surgeons practice across Karachi. Surgeons with his expertise in the private sector often draw salaries of over Rs. 20 lakh, but he continues to serve at a public institution out of commitment to suffering humanity. Dr. Rauf has been associated with JPMC for the last 17 years, where he also completed his post-graduation. He serves as General Secretary of the Pakistan Orthopedic Association and is an internationally certified trainer/instructor for HOPE – Hospital Preparedness for Emergencies — a certification he received from Nepal. There are only 4 to 5 such certified trainers in all of Sindh. “Condition Is Still Very Critical” Dr. Farrukh Rauf said that despite the Sindh government’s interest in the healthcare sector, the condition is still very critical, which is truly reflected in the overcrowded corridors of JPMC, Lyari and Civil Hospitals, where patients lie on floors and doctors work 36-hour shifts. On the issue of shortages at Civil, JPMC, and NICVD, Dr. Farrukh offers a mixed assessment. “There is no shortage of life-saving drugs,” he said. “Yes, ICU facility is very limited owing to patient burden. Seeing the overflow of patients, more equipment is needed.” He acknowledged the Sindh government’s efforts but stressed the scale of the problem. “Though the Minister of Health, Dr. Azra Pechuho, is addressing the concerns, however, there is a huge gap and lack of equipment for patients.” At tertiary hospitals like JPMC and Civil, where critical cases from across Sindh land every day, the mismatch between patient inflow and available ICU beds and machines remains a key pressure point for young doctors on duty. He traced the problem back to medical education itself. “The number of medical colleges has increased manifold in the last 10 years, but the standard of education has deteriorated. There is a dearth of quality doctors.” YDA’s Key Milestones According to Dr. Farrukh Rauf, Chairman YDA Sindh, the situation in government hospitals across Sindh, especially in Karachi, has improved only because of constant struggle. “Owing to YDA’s struggle and efforts, salaries of young and mid-career doctors were revised. Previously, they were lower than in all other provinces,” he said. He added that security was one of the biggest issues YDA flagged early on. “Doctors were facing serious security issues. There was no health risk allowance, which is being introduced now owing to the YDA movement.” The gains, he notes, came after years of protests at JPMC, Civil Hospital Karachi, and other tertiary centers where patient load far exceeds available staff and basic facilities. YDA Beyond Protests And Karachi The Young Doctors Association, once seen as a Karachi-centric pressure group, now claims a presence across the province. “I had established YDA units in all districts of Sindh including Umerkot, Thar, Ghotki. Now almost in twenty districts YDA is active for the rights of doctors and patients,” Dr. Farrukh said. In Karachi, the association is active in Civil, Lyari, JPMC and NICH. “We seek and welcome active participation from other government hospitals,” he added. The work has expanded beyond protests. YDA runs a welfare committee that coordinated flood relief last year, and an academic committee that offers career counseling, FCPS guidance, and surgical workshops. “We have constituted a welfare committee which offers coordinated help on disasters like floods last year. There is an academic committee which offers career counseling, how to give high-level exams, and workshops on surgical procedures,” he said. On training, Dr. Farrukh said YDA is pushing for reforms in the PGT system. “We are trying to get PGT seats equal in number to the number of graduates.” Violence And Security Gaps For Dr. Farrukh Rauf, the frustration in wards often boils over into violence against doctors. But he says the anger has a root cause. “Most of the people get provocative owing to the absence of ICU or urgent facility for their patient,” he said. “It is necessary to expand ICUs and facilities to handle the high influx of patients which overburdens doctors.” He was blunt about administrative failures too. “There are security lapses also on the part of the administration.” The Way Forward Dr. Farrukh argues the solution is not in Karachi’s tertiary hospitals alone, but in strengthening the entire pyramid. “We need a proper primary healthcare network across the province, like in developed countries,” he said. “Patients who can be treated at the UC or Tehsil level should not be coming to

Iran, Oman make progress on Strait of Hormuz shipping talks

Iran and Oman have reported progress in discussions aimed at ensuring safer shipping through the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing regional conflict. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said senior officials from both countries held talks in Tehran over two days to discuss arrangements for managing maritime traffic through the strategic waterway. According to Baghaei, the discussions focused on common principles and practical measures to maintain safe shipping while respecting the sovereignty of Iran and Oman, the two countries bordering the strait. He described the talks as useful and said progress had been made. Further political and technical consultations are expected to continue between the two sides. Baghaei also said there had been no change in the current traffic situation in the Strait of Hormuz. The development comes as tensions remain high between Iran, the United States and Israel. The waterway has become a major focus of the conflict because it is a critical route for global energy shipments. Iranian army spokesman General Abolfazl Shekarchi separately claimed that Washington had failed to achieve its objectives in the Strait of Hormuz and in weakening Iran. He described the situation for the United States as “chaotic and undesirable” and said Washington was apparently considering a new strategy. Shekarchi also suggested that any possible US withdrawal from the conflict could depend on Israel’s approval. Meanwhile, tensions have spread beyond the immediate battlefield. Iran summoned Ukrainian diplomats after Kyiv reportedly struck an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, killing at least one sailor and injuring another. Ukraine said the operation targeted Russian vessels allegedly carrying military cargo linked to Iran. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also accused Russia of supporting Iran during the ongoing conflict.
