Sharmila Faruqui alleges AJK poll rigging

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharmila Faruqui has alleged that her party believes in the power of the vote, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) relies on other means to secure political success.

Speaking during a television programme on Monday, Faruqui claimed that an atmosphere of fear and intimidation was created in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), giving the impression that the election mandate had already been secured.

She argued that announcements of development initiatives, including Green Bus projects, before polling day amounted to pre-poll rigging. According to her, even if the PML-N succeeds in forming a government in AJK with the current mandate, it will struggle to effectively serve the people.

Faruqui also questioned the handling of polling in constituencies where the PPP traditionally enjoys strong public support. She alleged that polling staff arrived late in several such areas, raising concerns about the transparency of the electoral process.

Referring to the killing of a PPP worker, she claimed that the incident was initially described as resulting from either a push or a heart attack, despite the party maintaining that the worker had been deliberately targeted.

The PPP leader further said the AJK elections should not be viewed through the political lens of Lahore or Karachi, as the region has its own unique issues and priorities.

She maintained that the people of Azad Kashmir have a longstanding bond with the PPP and asserted that no other political party enjoys the same level of public support in the region.

The PML-N has not publicly responded to Faruqui’s allegations. Meanwhile, results from the second phase of the AJK elections continue to emerge, with the PML-N maintaining a clear lead according to unofficial results.

  • Dera police arrest alleged inter-provincial robbers after encounter

    Dera Ismail Khan: Police in the City Circle arrested an alleged inter-provincial robber and his accomplice in an injured condition following an exchange of fire during a police operation. According to police, DSP City Syed Sagheer Gillani received information that an alleged inter-provincial robber was travelling with an accomplice from Peshawar to Punjab via Dera Ismail Khan. Acting on the tip-off, the DSP, along with a police contingent, set up a checkpoint at Sheikh Yousaf Chowk. Police said that when officers signalled a suspicious vehicle to stop, one of the occupants allegedly opened fire on DSP Gillani with a pistol instead of complying. Police returned fire, injuring both suspects. Their vehicle reportedly went out of control, veered off the road and crashed into a nearby wall. After the exchange of fire ended, police searched the vehicle and identified the injured suspects as Safdar Ali and his accomplice, Ahsan, son of Sajjad, a resident of Faisalabad. According to the police spokesperson, the two suspects were wanted by police in Punjab and Dera Ismail Khan in connection with 51 serious criminal cases, including murder, robbery, theft and illegal arms trafficking. Police further stated that the suspects were also wanted in robbery and theft cases registered at City, Town and Paharpur police stations in Dera Ismail Khan. The injured suspects were taken to hospital for medical treatment after the completion of legal formalities, while further investigation is underway. Meanwhile, District Police Officer (DPO) Dera Ismail Khan commended the police team for the successful operation, stating that indiscriminate action against criminal elements would continue and that every possible measure would be taken to maintain peace and security in the district.

In a court filing, Reiner claimed that he was expected to receive half of the trust once he reached the age of 30. However, he said that the money had never been transferred to him. He is now seeking access to the funds, arguing that they are needed to pay his attorneys and support himself while incarcerated. His request reportedly includes money for his commissary account, which he said would allow him to purchase everyday necessities such as socks and personal hygiene products. The dispute over the trust comes shortly after prosecutors secured an indictment against Reiner in the deaths of his parents. On Wednesday, August 12, a Los Angeles grand jury reportedly indicted him on two counts of first-degree murder. The charges relate to the deaths of Rob and Michelle Reiner. Prosecutors presented evidence to the grand jury, which ultimately determined that there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed toward trial. The indictment also reportedly includes a special circumstance allegation of “lying in wait.” Prosecutors allege that Reiner deliberately waited for his parents before attacking them when they were vulnerable or unaware. The additional allegation could significantly increase the potential consequences if Reiner is ultimately convicted. Depending on how the case proceeds and the applicable sentencing rules, a conviction involving such circumstances could expose him to extremely severe punishment, including life imprisonment without parole or potentially the death penalty. For now, Reiner remains entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the allegations against him have yet to be proven in court.
