Russia condemns EU’s 21st sanctions, warns of consequences

Russia has sharply criticized the European Union after the bloc approved its 21st package of sanctions, saying the new measures will damage European economies more than Russia and further increase tensions between Moscow and Brussels.

In a statement released by Russia’s Permanent Mission to the European Union, officials said the approval process for the latest sanctions exposed growing divisions within the EU. According to Moscow, many member states were reluctant to support additional restrictions because of the economic burden they are already facing. Russia claimed the lengthy negotiations reflected increasing concern among European governments over the impact of sanctions on businesses, energy supplies and overall economic growth.

The Russian mission accused the European Union of continuing a policy of confrontation despite rising economic challenges across Europe. It said EU leaders were ignoring the financial costs of sanctions while pursuing what Moscow described as a political campaign against Russia. The statement also referred to comments by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, who indicated that further sanctions could be introduced in the future.

According to Russia, discussions on new sanctions have become a political ritual aimed at showing unity among EU member states rather than achieving practical results. Moscow argued that the restrictions have failed to weaken Russia in the way European leaders had expected. Instead, it claimed that European citizens and businesses are paying the price through higher energy costs, inflation and slower economic growth.

The statement further argued that Europe’s economic difficulties have been intensified by the EU’s decision to reduce imports of Russian energy, continued financial and military support for Ukraine, and instability in global energy markets caused by ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Russian officials also pointed to a recent assessment by the European Central Bank, which highlighted geopolitical conflicts and energy market uncertainty as major risks to the European economy. Moscow said this assessment supports its argument that continued sanctions are creating additional pressure on European countries.

Using a road journey as a comparison, the Russian mission said the European Union was following a path that could lead its economy into serious difficulties. It argued that EU policymakers should reconsider their current strategy instead of introducing more restrictions that, in Russia’s view, have produced limited results while increasing costs for Europe.

The statement concluded by reaffirming that Russia considers the EU sanctions to be illegal unilateral measures. Moscow warned that any additional restrictions imposed by the European Union would receive what it described as an effective and appropriate response from Russia.

Hajj applications go digital as Pakistan lets pilg…

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf has announced that Pakistan’s Hajj application process has been fully digitized, allowing prospective pilgrims to apply from the comfort of their homes without visiting offices or standing in long queues. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, the minister said the digital system had been introduced to make the Hajj registration process easier and more convenient for pilgrims. Around 400,000 registered applicants will be able to submit their applications online. Under the new system, applicants will have several options for paying their Hajj expenses. Payments can be made through credit cards or PSID, while those wishing to pay in cash can print a challan and deposit the required amount. Yousaf said 107,526 pilgrims are eligible to perform Hajj under the government scheme. The collection of the first installment of Hajj expenses will begin on August 17, while the second installment is scheduled to be collected in October. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, with registration closing once the government’s allocated quota is reached. The minister also said pilgrims opting for the private Hajj scheme would be able to select a private operator through the Pak Hajj application. However, he cautioned pilgrims against making direct payments to private Hajj operators.

Time-restricted eating may boost brain health

A recent study suggests that limiting daily meals to an eight- to nine-hour eating window may help support brain health, particularly in older women. The findings were presented at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, and are currently considered preliminary because the research has not yet been peer-reviewed. Scientists from Rutgers University found that women aged 50 to 79 who followed time-restricted eating while maintaining a calorie deficit performed better on certain cognitive tests than those who spread their meals over a typical 12-hour period. The six-month study included 47 overweight or obese women, all of whom reduced their daily calorie intake by about 500 calories. Of the participants, 26 consumed all of their meals within an average 8.2-hour window, while the remaining women ate over an average 12.3-hour period. Both groups lost nearly 15 pounds on average by the end of the study. However, the women who followed the shorter eating window performed better in spatial planning and problem-solving tasks. They also made fewer errors on learning and memory tests, although those improvements were not statistically significant. Researchers found no noticeable differences in reaction time or multitasking abilities. Lead researcher Dr. Sue Shapses, a professor at Rutgers University and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, said the findings suggest that meal timing may provide additional cognitive benefits beyond weight loss alone. She explained that finishing meals about four hours before bedtime and limiting eating to an eight- or nine-hour daily window may help reduce age-related cognitive decline. Researchers believe these benefits could be linked to the body’s circadian rhythm, metabolism, inflammation, and nutrient-sensing pathways, although more research is needed to confirm these effects. Experts cautioned that the findings should be interpreted carefully because the study involved a relatively small number of participants and has not yet undergone peer review. The researchers emphasized that larger and longer-term studies are needed to determine whether time-restricted eating can significantly improve long-term brain health and cognitive function. Until further evidence becomes available, the results provide encouraging but preliminary insights into how meal timing may influence healthy brain aging.
