SBP reserves climb to $17.26bn

Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) posted a slight increase during the week ending July 17. However, the country’s overall liquid reserves recorded a small decline as commercial banks’ holdings decreased.

According to the latest figures released by the central bank, SBP’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $33 million, taking the total to $17.26 billion. The increase reflects a gradual improvement in the country’s external financial position.

Despite the rise in the central bank’s reserves, Pakistan’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves slipped by $5.9 million to $22.67 billion. The decline was caused by a fall in the reserves held by commercial banks.

Commercial banks’ net foreign exchange reserves dropped by $38.7 million, bringing their total holdings to $5.41 billion. As a result, Pakistan’s total foreign reserves now provide import cover for nearly 2.5 months, highlighting the need for further improvement in external inflows.

The Pakistani rupee remained stable in the interbank market. It closed at Rs277.90 against the US dollar, compared with Rs277.91 a day earlier. The slight gain came as the US dollar also remained mostly steady in global markets despite continued geopolitical tensions.

Meanwhile, gold prices in Pakistan declined sharply after international bullion prices fell by more than two percent.

The price of 24-karat gold per tola dropped by Rs1,800 to Rs432,036. The price of 10 grams of gold fell by Rs1,543 to Rs370,401. Silver prices also moved lower, with the per tola rate declining by Rs33 to Rs6,370.

The decline followed a strong rally in the previous trading session when gold prices had increased significantly in the domestic market.

Internationally, gold prices fell after investors shifted their focus to rising oil prices and expectations that the US Federal Reserve may continue raising interest rates to control inflation. Spot gold traded near $4,047 per ounce, while US gold futures also recorded noticeable losses.

Global energy markets remained under pressure as Brent crude oil climbed to around $100 per barrel. Rising tensions in the Middle East and concerns over disruptions to oil supplies supported higher crude prices.

Analysts believe that increasing oil prices could push inflation higher around the world. This may encourage central banks, particularly the US Federal Reserve, to maintain a tighter monetary policy.

Higher interest rates generally reduce the appeal of gold because the precious metal does not provide any interest or fixed return to investors. As borrowing costs increase, investors often shift towards interest-bearing assets.

  • Lahore improves global traffic ranking, surpasses 149 cities

Lahore has registered a notable improvement in urban travel-time performance, emerging ahead of 149 major global cities, according to the World Traffic Index. The city is currently ranked 149th, reflecting a significant improvement in its relative travel-time position. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi, attributed the improvement to strengthened traffic management, enhanced enforcement, improved road infrastructure, digital surveillance and growing public compliance with traffic regulations. “The improvement in Lahore’s travel-time performance is the outcome of sustained traffic management measures, evidence-based enforcement, technological integration and greater public awareness of road safety,” the CTO said. He said Lahore Traffic Police has introduced a more structured and technology-driven approach to traffic management, including enhanced patrolling, camera-based monitoring and digital oversight. The development of underpasses and signal-free corridors, rationalization of U-turns and strict action against wrong-way driving have also contributed to improving traffic flow. According to the World Traffic Index, Lahore was ranked 120th in 2024 and 129th in 2025. The city’s current position at 149th represents further improvement in its travel-time performance. The index places several major international cities significantly higher on the ranking, indicating comparatively poorer travel-time conditions. Los Angeles is ranked 3rd, Sharjah 4th, New Delhi 5th, Dhaka 7th, Tehran 14th, Istanbul 20th, Moscow 29th, Bangkok 39th, Toronto 50th, Sydney 57th, Karachi 64th and Melbourne 65th. Other cities included in the ranking are Beijing at 76th, Dubai at 90th, London at 119th, Paris at 142nd and Tokyo at 145th. The report also indicates that Lahore’s travel-time performance is comparatively better than that of Karachi and Islamabad, while cities in Switzerland, Austria, Sweden and Germany feature prominently among those with stronger travel-time performance. CTO Lahore acknowledged that inadequate road infrastructure, insufficient parking facilities and encroachments continue to pose challenges to efficient traffic movement. He said coordinated efforts with relevant civic and administrative departments are being pursued to address these structural issues and further enhance mobility across the city. “No city can achieve sustainable improvement in its traffic system without active cooperation from its citizens,” Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi said, urging motorists and road users to observe traffic laws, adopt responsible driving practices and cooperate with traffic enforcement personnel. The CTO also appreciated the media’s role in promoting traffic discipline and road-safety awareness, saying that sustained public awareness is essential for achieving long-term improvements in urban mobility. He said the improvement in Lahore’s travel-time performance was an encouraging indicator of the city’s evolving traffic-management framework. Lahore Traffic Police, he added, remains committed to leveraging technology, enforcement, institutional reforms and public engagement to ensure safer, smoother and more efficient mobility for citizens. The detailed World Traffic Index report is available on the Numbeo website.

Zelensky accuses Iran of direct role in Russia’s war against Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Iran of directly participating in the war against Ukraine through its continuous military support for Russia. Speaking on potential threats following a recent incident involving an Iranian vessel, Zelensky urged caution to prevent the opening of another front while stressing that Ukraine must remain prepared for all scenarios. He stated that Tehran became a direct participant by supplying Moscow with thousands of attack drones from the outset of the full-scale invasion and subsequently granting licences for local production. He added that both Iran and North Korea have effectively attacked Ukraine by supplying Russia with weaponry, including missiles, drones, and artillery ammunition. In response, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei rejected assertions that Tehran had sought negotiations with the United States to end hostilities, asserting that Iran will independently determine matters of war and peace. Baghaei added that Washington had initially expected an Iranian surrender within days of commencing attacks, yet months later, the United States continues to face severe challenges in the region.

Arab and Palestinian groups urge global action to protect Jerusalem and Al Aqsa Mosque

Fourteen Arab and Palestinian organisations have issued an urgent appeal calling for immediate international action to protect occupied East Jerusalem and the Al Aqsa Mosque, warning that recent Israeli measures are threatening the city’s religious heritage and historic identity. The groups said the situation has reached a critical stage and argued that stronger global intervention is needed to prevent further escalation. In a joint statement released on Wednesday, the organisations expressed concern over what they described as increasing Israeli actions aimed at changing the existing status of Jerusalem and its holy sites. They said recent developments have targeted not only Al Aqsa Mosque but also the Palestinian residents of Jerusalem and the city’s Arab, Islamic, and Christian character. Al Aqsa Mosque is considered Islam’s third holiest site. The same area is also revered by Jews as the Temple Mount, believed to be the location of two ancient Jewish temples. Israel captured East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab Israeli war and later declared the entire city its capital in 1980, a move that has not been recognised by most of the international community. According to the appeal, Israeli authorities have allowed an increase in visits to the Al Aqsa compound by Jewish groups under police protection. The organisations claimed these actions, along with restrictions placed on Muslim worshippers, are attempts to alter the long standing arrangements governing access to the holy site. The statement also raised concerns about attacks on worshippers, restrictions placed on religious leaders, and measures targeting guards responsible for protecting the mosque. The groups argued that these actions undermine freedom of worship and threaten the historical and legal status of one of Islam’s most important religious landmarks. Beyond the mosque itself, the organisations accused Israel of expanding settlements, demolishing Palestinian homes, revoking residency rights, carrying out excavations around the Old City, and increasing pressure on both Islamic and Christian religious sites. They warned that these policies are changing the city’s demographic and cultural landscape while placing Jerusalem’s diverse religious heritage at risk. The appeal also highlighted concerns over the city’s Christian community. It said restrictions affecting churches, religious institutions, and Christian leaders threaten the long established Christian presence in Jerusalem and weaken the city’s multicultural identity. The organisations argued that international statements of concern are no longer enough to address the situation. They called for coordinated political, legal, and human rights efforts to stop actions they consider violations of international law. They also urged governments and international institutions to ensure accountability and prevent further changes to the city’s status. The statement specifically called on Jordan, which holds custodial responsibilities for Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites, to intensify diplomatic efforts and encourage stronger international engagement. The groups said Jordan’s role remains essential in defending the religious and historical significance of the city’s sacred places. Describing Jerusalem as a shared historical, cultural, and religious responsibility, the organisations stressed that protecting the city requires practical measures rather than symbolic declarations. They said preserving the rights of its residents and safeguarding its holy sites should remain an international priority. The appeal was signed by several organisations, including the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, the Al Quds International Institution, the Arab National Congress, the European Palestinian Conference, and the Islamic National Conference. The statement comes as tensions continue to rise across the occupied West Bank, where Israeli military raids and settler related violence have increased since the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. Palestinian officials say thousands of people have been injured or arrested during this period, while violence has intensified further following recent deadly clashes near Nablus involving Palestinians, Israeli settlers, and Israeli forces.
