COLOMBO: Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has reportedly withdrawn from the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026, bringing an early end to a turbulent campaign that was overshadowed by an administrative mix-up and below-par performances.

According to media reports, the 26-year-old informed his franchise, Kandy Royals, that he was leaving the tournament for personal reasons. Neither Afridi nor the franchise has disclosed further details, while Kandy Royals are yet to announce a replacement.

Afridi’s departure comes just days after he was at the centre of an unusual selection controversy. Reports claimed he had initially been listed as the team’s Impact Player for a match against Colombo Capitals, but was unable to feature after an administrative error left his name off the official team sheet.

The mistake reportedly occurred after Kandy Royals elected to bat first, with team officials later informing Afridi that an analyst had accidentally omitted his name from the final squad submitted before the match.

The incident prompted the Pakistan pacer to raise the issue with an official from the tournament’s Anti-Corruption Unit, after which the matter was referred to the match referee for review.

Franchise officials and tournament organisers later apologised to Afridi for the error. Reports suggested the left-arm fast bowler had briefly considered leaving the competition immediately after the incident but decided to stay with the squad following the apology.

Despite remaining in the tournament, Afridi struggled to make his usual impact with the ball. He claimed seven wickets in six matches, averaging 32.00, while conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.18, figures well below the standards expected from one of Pakistan’s premier fast bowlers.

Meanwhile, the LPL continues to see changes in team combinations, with two more Pakistani cricketers joining the competition as replacement signings.

Young batter Khawaja Nafay has been drafted by Jaffna Kings to replace Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran, while experienced all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed has signed with Dambulla Sixers as a replacement for Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Shaheen’s reported withdrawal marks another twist in an eventful LPL campaign and is likely to spark further discussion about player management and tournament administration as the competition heads toward its decisive stages.

      ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is expected to secure a two-thirds majority in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly after elections for the reserved seats. Speaking about the political situation in Azad Kashmir, Rana Sanaullah said that PML-N would form its government in the region with a clear majority. He stated that the party had secured victory on 25 seats and would achieve a two-thirds majority once the elections for reserved seats were completed. The prime minister’s adviser also expressed his appreciation for Sajid Iqbal, who was elected from LA-14. He thanked the newly elected lawmaker for deciding to support PML-N and said that Sajid Iqbal would work alongside the party for the development and improvement of Azad Kashmir. Rana Sanaullah said that the people of Azad Kashmir had given PML-N a mandate to improve the situation in the region and address the issues faced by its people. He emphasized that the party would fulfill the commitments it had made during the election campaign and would work to bring positive changes to the lives of citizens. He further said that the AJK Legislative Assembly would be allowed to function with its full constitutional powers. According to him, the new government would focus on governance, development and resolving the problems of the people instead of engaging in political confrontation. Commenting on the ongoing protests and sit-ins in Azad Kashmir, Rana Sanaullah said that the citizens participating in the demonstrations were their brothers and should not be viewed as opponents. He stressed that the people of Azad Kashmir were as much owners of Pakistan as citizens living in other parts of the country. However, he claimed that only a very small portion of the protesters, estimated at around one to one-and-a-half percent, might be influenced by elements attempting to create unrest or provoke violence. He maintained that the majority of the people participating in the protests were ordinary citizens expressing their concerns. Rana Sanaullah’s remarks come amid heightened political activity in Azad Kashmir following the recent elections. The expected formation of a PML-N government, along with the possibility of the party securing a two-thirds majority through reserved seats, could significantly strengthen its position in the AJK Legislative Assembly. The PML-N leadership has indicated that its priority will be to address governance and development-related challenges in Azad Kashmir. Rana Sanaullah reiterated that the party would honor its election commitments and work toward improving the region’s overall situation. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining unity between Azad Kashmir and Pakistan, saying that the people of the region have an equal stake in the country.     The superintendent of Adiala Jail has submitted a two-page report to the Supreme Court regarding the health of PTI founder Imran Khan and his meetings with family members while in prison. According to the report, Imran Khan and his wife have been meeting regularly every Tuesday under the applicable jail rules. The report states that a total of 84 meetings between the two have taken place so far. The jail superintendent also referred to proceedings related to a contempt of court case, stating that the matter had already been decided by a bench headed by the chief justice of the Islamabad High Court. The report also mentioned an undertaking given by Salman Akram Raja that the media would not be addressed inside the jail premises after meetings. The report claimed that the undertaking was allegedly violated when media interaction took place despite the court’s directions. It also referred to an Islamabad High Court single-bench ruling in the Sher Afzal case, in which Jail Rule 265 was declared unlawful. The jail administration further alleged that statements made during meetings at the prison were used to create public sentiment against the judiciary, foreign policy and law-enforcement institutions. Regarding Imran Khan’s health, the report said that prison medical officers examine him and monitor his food and water intake three times a day. It added that several government doctors have also examined him and that records of these medical assessments are available. The report said Imran Khan has also received treatment from an eye specialist. According to the jail superintendent, one of his eyes has now become almost normal following treatment. A summary of 39 medical examinations conducted by different specialists between November 4, 2023 and August 10, 2026, has also been attached to the report. The jail superintendent requested the Supreme Court to dispose of the case in light of the information provided in the report. Meanwhile, a three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed is scheduled to hear the case tomorrow, August 18.

The judge ordered that Aguirre remain held in a maximum-security prison pending trial. The indictment represents one of the most prominent legal developments in the case since the 2022 arrest of former federal Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam. Of the 43 trainees abducted on 26 September 2014 after commandeering buses for a protest, the remains of only three have been positively identified.

    Weekly inflation rises 0.15% in second week of August

    ISLAMABAD: Weekly inflation increased by 0.15% during the second week of August 2026, pushing the year-on-year inflation rate to 9.11%, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks changes in the prices of essential consumer goods, showed a mixed trend during the week. Prices of several food and household items increased, while consumers received some relief from lower prices of petroleum products and selected food commodities. According to the PBS report, prices of 20 out of 51 essential commodities increased during the week under review, while prices of nine items declined. The prices of the remaining 22 commodities remained unchanged. Onion prices surge sharply Among the major price increases, onions recorded the most significant weekly jump, becoming 24.68% more expensive compared with the previous week. The increase is likely to add further pressure on household food budgets, particularly for low-income consumers who are more exposed to fluctuations in basic food prices. The price of gram pulse increased by 3.35%, while chicken became 2.45% more expensive during the week. LPG prices also edged up by 0.67%. Other commodities that recorded weekly price increases included tea, mustard oil, yoghurt and masoor pulse, adding to the overall upward movement in the weekly inflation indicator. Petroleum prices provide some relief The weekly inflation reading was partly offset by declines in the prices of petroleum and several food items. Petrol prices decreased by 2.35% during the week, providing some relief to consumers and transport users. Tomato prices fell by 1.26%, while potatoes became 0.73% cheaper. Diesel prices also declined, though marginally, by 0.29%. Prices of bananas, moong pulse, eggs and sugar also recorded weekly decreases. Despite these reductions, the increase in the prices of several essential food items, particularly onions, pulses and chicken, kept overall weekly inflation in positive territory. Food prices remain major source of annual pressure The year-on-year comparison presents a more pronounced picture of price pressures in several essential commodities. Tomatoes recorded the largest annual increase, with prices rising by 143.77% compared with the same period last year. Onion prices were 125.75% higher, while wheat flour became 77.41% more expensive. LPG prices increased by 55.41% on an annual basis, while diesel recorded a 34.05% increase. Petrol prices were also 23.02% higher than a year earlier. The sharp annual increases in basic food items indicate that consumers continue to face significant pressure in meeting everyday household expenses, even though some commodities have become cheaper compared with last year. Several commodities become cheaper annually The annual data also showed declines in the prices of a number of commodities. Potato prices dropped by 30% compared with a year earlier, marking the largest annual decline among the commodities listed in the report. Sugar prices fell by 17.93%, while chicken became 17.45% cheaper on an annual basis. Gram pulse, eggs and moong pulse also recorded year-on-year declines. The contrasting movements highlight the uneven nature of inflation, with some essential commodities witnessing substantial annual increases while others have recorded notable reductions. The latest PBS figures suggest that although overall inflation remains elevated, price movements continue to vary considerably across different categories. Food, energy and other essential commodities remain key factors influencing household expenditure and the broader cost-of-living situation.
