Shakira has expressed her support for Colombia after a powerful earthquake struck the country, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming numerous lives. The Colombian singer used social media to send a heartfelt message to those affected by the disaster while urging people to come together and support one another during the difficult time.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia at around 7:34 a.m. on Monday, August 10. The devastating tremor caused widespread damage across several areas, with the reported death toll reaching 132. Hundreds of people were also injured as buildings and infrastructure were damaged by the powerful quake.

Following the disaster, Shakira took to her Instagram Stories to address the situation and share a message of solidarity with her fellow Colombians. The singer, who has frequently spoken about her deep connection to her home country, offered her thoughts to the victims and families struggling in the aftermath of the earthquake.

“Beloved Colombia, my heart is with everyone who felt this earthquake today and with the families who are going through moments of anguish,” Shakira wrote in Spanish.

She further encouraged Colombians to remain united and help one another as emergency teams worked to respond to the destruction.

“In times like these, we Colombians know how to come together and support one another. All my strength and love for my homeland. Let’s embrace tightly and stay tuned to the instructions so we can help as soon as possible,” she added.

The earthquake reportedly injured at least 570 people, according to figures released by authorities. The epicentre was located near the village of San José del Palmar in Colombia’s Chocó province, where the impact was particularly severe.

The disaster also caused extensive damage to homes and public infrastructure.

Around 1,575 homes were reportedly damaged, while 61 buildings collapsed following the powerful tremors. Several essential facilities were also affected, including 18 health centres, 52 educational centres and 17 community centres.

As the scale of the destruction became clearer, authorities declared a state of emergency to strengthen rescue and relief operations. Emergency departments were mobilised to assist affected communities, assess damaged areas and provide support to people who had been displaced or injured.

Shakira was not the only Colombian celebrity to react to the devastating earthquake. Several prominent Latin music stars also used their social media platforms to express concern and help spread information about relief efforts.

Maluma, J Balvin and Karol G were among the entertainers who addressed the situation, using their large online audiences to raise awareness and share information related to assistance and resources.

The earthquake has prompted an outpouring of solidarity across Colombia, with public figures, emergency workers and ordinary citizens joining efforts to support those affected. As rescue and recovery operations continue, messages from stars such as Shakira have highlighted the importance of unity and cooperation during one of the country’s most difficult moments in recent years.

Following the latest revision, petrol will now cost Rs. 335.81 per litre, while high-speed diesel will be available at Rs. 388.38 per litre. Officials said the increase reflects fluctuations in international crude oil prices caused by renewed tensions in the Persian Gulf, which have affected global energy markets. The government continues to collect substantial taxes and duties on petroleum products. Consumers currently pay around Rs110 per litre in taxes and levies on petrol, while diesel carries approximately Rs96 per litre in taxes and duties. Fuel prices have remained volatile throughout the year. Diesel had previously reached a record Rs520.35 per litre in early April after rising sharply from Rs281 per litre during the escalation of the US-Iran conflict. Similarly, petrol climbed to a peak of Rs458.41 per litre after increasing from Rs266 per litre in early March. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik recently announced that fuel prices would now be reviewed daily instead of weekly. The decision aims to ensure domestic fuel prices better reflect international market trends, especially during periods of global uncertainty. Under the new policy, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) will determine daily fuel prices based on changes in international oil markets. However, the move has faced criticism from the All Pakistan Dealers Association, which has warned that it may launch protests against the daily pricing mechanism. Petrol is primarily used by private vehicle owners, motorcycles, rickshaws, and small transport operators. As a result, any increase directly impacts middle- and lower-income households. High-speed diesel is widely used in heavy transport, agriculture, power generation, and industrial sectors, meaning price hikes can also increase transportation and production costs, contributing to inflation. With monthly sales of 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes, petrol and diesel remain Pakistan’s largest petroleum products by consumption and are significant contributors to government revenue. As global oil prices continue to fluctuate, consumers should expect further adjustments in domestic fuel prices in the coming weeks.

    Government challenges SC order to shift Imran Khan…

    Islamabad: The federal government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court challenging its interim order directing the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital. In its petition, the government described the Supreme Court’s interim order as an overreach of legal authority. It argued that the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978, clearly prescribe the procedure for providing medical treatment to prisoners. According to the government, a prisoner can be shifted to a government civil hospital or a district headquarters hospital when necessary. However, it said there is no provision in the law for transferring a prisoner to a private hospital. The government also maintained that prison laws and the Prisons Act do not give a prisoner the right to receive treatment from a private doctor of his choice. The petition stated that Imran Khan’s case had been fixed for hearing for the first time and that he had not even been issued a notice. Despite this, the court issued an interim order regarding his medical treatment and transfer. The government argued that the court appeared to have reached the conclusion that Imran Khan’s health was deteriorating on the basis of a medical report. However, according to the petition, the report did not clearly indicate any such deterioration. It further stated that a medical board had examined Imran Khan several times. The government maintained that expert medical opinions should have been sought before making a decision on such a medical matter. The petition also challenged the use of Section 561-A of the Code of Criminal Procedure, arguing that the provision cannot be used to interfere in matters falling within the jurisdiction of prison authorities. The government further objected to the relief granted to Imran Khan at the interim stage. It said four requests were effectively granted through the interim order, including his transfer to Shifa International Hospital, access to personal doctors, meetings with family members, and provision of medical reports to his lawyers. According to the government, such relief at the interim stage amounted to granting final relief without completing the regular legal proceedings. The petition also warned that allowing a special facility for Imran Khan at a private hospital could set a precedent for other prisoners. It argued that other inmates could make similar demands under prison laws, potentially creating a large number of such requests. The government maintained that providing such special treatment would also conflict with the principle of equal treatment of prisoners.
