Songkran Road Toll Climbs to 154 as Holiday Travel Enters Fourth Day

BANGKOK — The first four days of the Songkran holiday’s “seven dangerous days” have claimed 154 lives and left 705 people injured in road accidents across Thailand, with Bangkok recording the highest number of fatalities, authorities reported on Tuesday.

Songkran Holiday Road Death Toll Rises to 95 After Three Days

While the toll remains deeply troubling, the overall number of accidents has dropped significantly compared with the same period last year. A total of 755 road crashes have been recorded, representing a decline of nearly 25 percent from the 1,002 accidents reported during the first four days of Songkran in 2025, when 144 people died and 999 were injured. On Monday alone, 237 accidents occurred nationwide, resulting in 224 injuries and 51 deaths, according to Yossapol Wenukoset, head of the Road Safety Centre. The government’s annual safety awareness and enforcement campaign, themed “Drive Safely, Reduce Speed, Prevent Accidents,” runs from April 10 to 16.

Speeding continues to be the deadliest factor on Thailand’s roads, responsible for 41.8 percent of all accidents between April 10 and 13. Drink driving followed closely, accounting for 27.4 percent of crashes. Motorcycles remain the most vulnerable vehicles, involved in nearly 71 percent of all accidents. The vast majority of crashes, 75.5 percent, occurred on straight roads, with those under local tambon administrative organisations and in villages making up the largest share at 36.3 percent. The most dangerous time of day has been the late afternoon period between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., when 20.25 percent of all accidents took place. Young adults and middle-aged travellers have been the hardest hit, with those aged 20 to 29 and 30 to 39 each accounting for 17.8 percent of injuries and fatalities.

Songkran Road Toll at 71, With 317 Injured After Two Days

Lampang province in the north has seen the highest cumulative number of accidents with 33 cases and the highest number of injuries with 34. Bangkok, however, has recorded the highest death toll with eight fatalities. On a more positive note, 22 provinces have reported zero road deaths during the four-day period. Thiraphat Khatchamart, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said traffic volumes remained heavy on Tuesday as many people were still travelling to Songkran celebrations while others had begun making their return journeys to Bangkok or their workplaces in an effort to avoid the severe congestion expected on Wednesday. He added that the Road Safety Centre has instructed all relevant agencies to manage traffic according to local conditions, with special attention being paid to major routes where construction is underway. Checkpoints and service points are being set up in suitable locations to help prevent drowsy driving and rear-end collisions, Thiraphat added.

Four people were killed in the shooting. According to the FIR, the victims included the suspect’s wife, his father-in-law, mother-in-law and brother-in-law. The complainant alleged that the suspect carried out the killings with the involvement or encouragement of his father and brothers. The victim’s brother told police that the family had previously registered a kidnapping case against the suspect at Sunder Police Station. He alleged that the case was filed after his sister was allegedly abducted. Police identified the suspect as Imran Shaukat. According to officials, he had married the woman around six months ago. The shooting took place in the Chuhng area, where the suspect allegedly targeted members of his wife’s family. The incident left four people dead and caused panic in the area. Police said the suspect fled or moved away from the scene after the shooting before turning the weapon on himself. He died from the gunshot wound. Investigators have registered a case and begun examining the circumstances surrounding the killings. Police are also looking into the allegations contained in the FIR regarding the suspect’s family members and the earlier kidnapping case. Officials said further investigation would determine the exact motive behind the incident and establish the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting. The case has raised concerns about a possible dispute between the two families following the marriage. Police are expected to question relatives and examine available evidence as part of the investigation.

    LHC sets judges’ schedule from August 10

    The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued the judges’ roster for the sixth week of its summer vacation. The new roster will come into effect from August 10. It will cover proceedings at the principal seat in Lahore and the court’s regional benches. According to the roster, two division benches at the Lahore Principal Seat will hear appeals from Monday. Four judges will also work as single benches and hear cases of different categories. A two-member division bench headed by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum will hear appeals of all types. Another two-member division bench headed by Justice Sadiq Mahmood Khurram will also hear appeals in different categories. Chief Justice Aalia Neelum will also hear petitions as a single bench. She will deal with applications and petitions of various kinds during the week. Justice Shahid Karim will hear civil matters. Justice Sadiq Mahmood Khurram will deal with criminal petitions. Justice Syed Ahsan Raza Kazmi will hear civil petitions of different categories. The arrangement has been made to ensure that important cases continue to be heard during the summer recess. The roster also includes arrangements for the LHC’s regional benches. Justice Ahmad Nadeem Arshad will hear cases as a single bench at the Bahawalpur Bench. Justice Khalid Ishaq will perform the same role at the Multan Bench. At the Rawalpindi Bench, Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan will hear cases as a single bench. The issuance of the roster will allow the high court to continue judicial proceedings during the sixth week of summer vacations. The scheduled benches will hear appeals, petitions and other cases according to their assigned jurisdictions.

The PML-N, however, claimed that Younus had been involved in its election campaign . PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari expressed grief over the death, stating that Younus had been “martyred in Mirpur’s Nakyal” in “firing by” the PML-N candidate . “Where are the relevant authorities? What is the Election Commission doing?” he demanded . The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and the National T20 Cup will now feature 20 teams after the addition of teams from Sialkot and Peshawar, with Lahore and Karachi fielding four teams each. The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy will begin on November 1 and will be split into Gold and Silver divisions, with both running simultaneously. The Gold division will have eight teams, while the Silver Division will feature 12 teams, including the new sides from Sialkot and Peshawar. The format of Pakistan’s premier first-class tournament has changed again, with last season featuring 10 teams and 18 teams competing in the 2024-25 season. The Hanif Mohammad Trophy, a non-first-class three-day tournament introduced in 2023-24 for lower-ranked regional teams, has been discontinued. Before the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy commences, the President’s Trophy first-class tournament for eight departmental teams and the non-first-class President’s Trophy will be played concurrently from September 12. The domestic season will conclude with the National T20 Cup, played in February and March, with its Silver division featuring 12 teams preceding the Gold division, which will run from February 23 until March 6. The introduction of the National Champions Cup reflects the PCB’s commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s ODI talent pool ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
