Stray SpaceX rocket believed to have struck Moon

A discarded section of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is believed to have crashed into the Moon, giving scientists a rare opportunity to study the effects of a known impact on the lunar surface.

The object, a 4,000-kilogram upper stage left in space after a January 2025 mission, was expected to strike the Moon at around 07:35 BST after spending more than a year drifting through space. Scientists say the rocket stage gradually shifted onto a collision course due to the combined gravitational pull of the Earth, Moon and Sun.

The impact is not considered dangerous to Earth, according to NASA, which plans to analyse the event to improve its understanding of lunar geology and refine methods for tracking objects in space.

Although the collision itself was too faint to be seen with the naked eye, astronomers using powerful telescopes are monitoring the Moon for signs of a fresh crater and a plume of dust created by the impact. Researchers are now comparing before-and-after images of the lunar surface to identify the exact location of the strike.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Danuri lunar spacecraft are expected to capture images of the impact site in the coming days. Scientists say processing and analysing the data could take several days or even weeks before the first confirmed images are released.

Experts describe the incident as a valuable scientific experiment because the size, speed and mass of the object were known in advance. Unlike natural meteor impacts, the predictable nature of the collision allows researchers to better understand how craters form and how lunar material behaves after a high-speed impact.

However, astronomers also say the incident highlights the growing problem of space debris. Thousands of human-made objects now remain on or around the Moon, and experts warn that increasing congestion in space could pose challenges for future exploration missions if debris is not managed more effectively.

Meanwhile, SpaceX continues its regular launch operations. The company successfully launched another Falcon 9 rocket from Florida on a separate mission carrying satellites into orbit, underscoring the growing pace of space activity as agencies and private companies expand their exploration programmes.

OSLO: A 15-year-old Pakistani footballer has gone missing after reportedly leaving the Better Future Pakistan camp in Norway without informing team officials, prompting an immediate police search during the team’s stay in Oslo. According to a statement issued by Better Future Pakistan, the young player departed the camp on his own without seeking permission from the management. The organization said his whereabouts remain unknown despite ongoing efforts to locate him. Officials stressed that preliminary findings suggest the footballer left the camp voluntarily, with no evidence so far indicating foul play, kidnapping or coercion. They urged the public to avoid speculation while authorities continue their investigation. The camp management said police were notified within 20 minutes of the player last being seen. Norwegian authorities responded promptly, launching search operations and initiating the necessary legal procedures to trace the missing teenager. Better Future Pakistan stated that it is maintaining close contact with local law enforcement agencies and is fully cooperating with the investigation. The organization also said it is providing updates to the player’s family and relevant Pakistani authorities as new information becomes available. The incident occurred after the conclusion of the Norway Cup, one of the world’s largest international youth football tournaments, which was held in Oslo from July 25 to August 1. Better Future Pakistan had sent a group of young footballers to participate in the event as part of its youth development program. While the missing player’s disappearance has raised concern, officials confirmed that all other members of the Pakistani contingent have safely returned home following the completion of the tournament. Sistrology face backlash over Spider-Man movie outfits

Spider-Man fever has reached Pakistan, but a recent appearance by popular YouTube sisters Sistrology has sparked an online debate over fashion and modesty. With Tom Holland returning as Peter Parker in the latest Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the superhero has once again become a global pop culture sensation. The film has dominated conversations worldwide, drawing huge crowds to cinemas and inspiring fans to celebrate the iconic Marvel character in different ways. The excitement has also been felt in Pakistan, where moviegoers have flocked to theatres to watch the superhero adventure. As the craze continues to grow, many fans have embraced the theme by wearing Spider-Man-inspired outfits and accessories during cinema visits. Among those joining the trend were the members of Sistrology, the popular Pakistani YouTube sisters known for sharing lifestyle content, vlogs, and family moments. The younger sisters recently attended a screening of the film dressed in Spider-Man-themed outfits, documenting the experience in a vlog that quickly gained traction across social media platforms. While many viewers enjoyed the fun and playful costumes, others reacted negatively after clips from the vlog began circulating online. The sisters’ appearance soon became the subject of widespread discussion, with social media users expressing mixed opinions about their clothing choices. Critics argued that the outfits were not suitable and questioned whether they aligned with local cultural values. Some users claimed the costumes were too revealing, while others suggested the sisters should have opted for more modest attire. A number of comments focused on the contrast between international pop culture trends and traditional expectations surrounding public appearances in Pakistan. Several social media posts criticizing the vlog quickly went viral. One user questioned the absence of modesty, while another described the outfits as inappropriate. Others used humour and wordplay to mock the costumes, creating memes and jokes that spread across various platforms. Despite the criticism, the sisters also received support from fans who defended their right to express themselves through fashion. Supporters argued that the costumes were inspired by a globally popular superhero and were intended purely for entertainment. Many also pointed out that dressing according to a movie theme is a common practice at cinemas around the world and should not automatically become a source of controversy. The incident has once again highlighted how quickly social media can turn a lighthearted moment into a national discussion. Public figures and influencers often find themselves under intense scrutiny, with even casual fashion choices becoming topics of debate. As of now, Sistrology have not publicly responded to the criticism surrounding their Spider-Man-themed outfits. However, the discussion continues online, with users divided between those who believe the sisters crossed a line and those who feel they are being unfairly judged for simply participating in a global movie trend. The episode reflects the growing influence of social media in shaping public opinion, where viral moments can spark conversations about entertainment, culture, fashion, and personal expression within just a few hours.

UK border crisis: new record as 230 migrants cross…

The UK’s ongoing small boat crisis has come under renewed scrutiny after around 230 migrants crossed the English Channel and arrived in Britain, raising fresh questions about the government’s efforts to tackle irregular migration. The latest arrival comes just 17 days after 165 people crossed the Channel in a single day, according to reports. The new figure has added to growing political pressure on the UK government as ministers face continued challenges in preventing dangerous journeys across one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. Hundreds of people are believed to have reached the UK by small boats during the current week, with reports putting the number at more than 900. The continued crossings have become a major political issue, with the government under pressure to demonstrate that its border policies can reduce the number of people making the journey. People-smuggling networks are believed to charge migrants thousands of pounds for the dangerous passage. Critics say the criminal gangs running these operations make substantial profits while placing migrants’ lives at serious risk by using overcrowded and often unsuitable boats. The latest development follows an incident last week in which a small boat caught fire while attempting to cross the Channel. A total of 173 people were reportedly rescued following the incident, highlighting the dangers faced by those attempting the journey. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticized the French authorities over the continued crossings. He argued that French officials could have prevented boats of this size from entering deeper waters but failed to do so. The issue has also drawn strong criticism from Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. He has called for small boat crossings to be treated as a national security emergency, reflecting the increasingly prominent role of immigration in Britain’s political debate. The UK government has repeatedly pledged to tackle illegal immigration and disrupt the criminal networks responsible for organizing Channel crossings. However, the continued arrival of boats demonstrates the difficulty of stopping the journeys despite increased enforcement measures and cooperation with French authorities. The small boat crisis has become one of the most contentious issues in British politics, with politicians divided over how best to address irregular migration. While supporters of tougher policies argue that stronger border controls are urgently needed, others have stressed the need to address the criminal smuggling networks and the wider factors driving people to attempt dangerous crossings. With hundreds more people arriving in Britain, pressure on the government is likely to remain intense as it seeks to reduce Channel crossings and restore public confidence in its immigration strategy.

Sabalenka targets strong comeback at Toronto Open

TORONTO: World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is aiming to rediscover her best form as she begins her campaign at the WTA 1000 Canadian Open in Toronto, with the top ranking and momentum ahead of the US Open at stake. The Belarusian has enjoyed an outstanding hard-court season, winning 23 of her 24 matches on the surface in 2026. Her only defeat came against Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open final. Despite her dominance on hard courts, Sabalenka struggled to produce similar results during the clay and grass-court seasons. She was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the French Open before suffering a fourth-round exit at Wimbledon against Japan’s Naomi Osaka. The Toronto tournament could have a significant impact on the WTA rankings. Sabalenka risks losing the world No. 1 position if she fails to reach the round of 16 and Rybakina goes on to win the title. Although Sabalenka has never progressed beyond the semi-finals at the Canadian event, she believes she is mentally refreshed after taking a short break following Wimbledon. The 27-year-old spent several days on the Greek island of Mykonos before returning to training with renewed motivation. Speaking ahead of the tournament, Sabalenka said the time away from tennis allowed her to recover physically and mentally. She admitted that some adjustments made during the clay and grass seasons did not deliver the desired results but expressed confidence that returning to her usual approach would help her regain consistency. The tournament draw presents another tough challenge for the top seed. Sabalenka leads the upper half, which also features two-time champion Jessica Pegula, Amanda Anisimova and Poland’s Iga Swiatek, who is looking to bounce back after an early Wimbledon exit. Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina heads the bottom half of the draw alongside Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka and newly crowned Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova. Noskova, who recently captured her maiden Grand Slam title, enters the tournament with growing confidence and could face rising Philippine star Alexandra Eala in the third round. Several notable players will miss the tournament. Wimbledon runner-up Karolina Muchova remains unavailable while recovering from minor surgery, while defending champion Victoria Mboko is also sidelined with the knee injury that forced her to withdraw from Wimbledon.
