Sunny Deol’s ‘maternal aunt’ remark on Pakistan sparks online storm

Bollywood actor Sunny Deol found himself at the center of controversy on Sunday. He was speaking to Indian media during a promotional event for his upcoming film Batwara 1947.

Deol, joined by his son and co-star Karan Deol, was asked about “Pakistan as a nation” and its “atmosphere” by a journalist present at the event. Rather than answering directly, he chose to quote his late father, veteran actor Dharmendra.

He said the two countries could not really be separated in feeling, since they were once one. Quoting his father, he called India “mother” and Pakistan “maternal aunt.” He added that everyone already knows the two nations remain connected in some way.

Dharmendra passed away last November. He had long supported warmer ties between India and Pakistan throughout his life.

Deol chose not to elaborate further on Pakistan. Instead, he stressed his role as an actor rather than a political voice. He said actors and filmmakers exist to tell stories, not to push political agendas.

Despite this attempt to stay neutral, his history tells a different story. Deol has built much of his career on hyper-patriotic films like Border and Gadar. He has also served as a BJP politician in the past. This contrast between his politics and his softer comments did not sit well with many online.

One social media user accused him of relying on “nationalistic jingoism” during his past election campaigns. Others called him “opportunistic” for echoing his father’s peace-leaning stance now. A wave of users criticized what they saw as sympathy toward Pakistan.

Tensions between the two countries have remained high for years. They escalated further after a four-day military conflict in May 2025. India responded by restricting Pakistani entertainment content online, banning YouTube channels and Instagram accounts of several celebrities. Streaming platforms like Spotify also removed related songs and imagery.

Given this backdrop, the backlash against Deol’s comments was almost inevitable. His film, Batwara 1947, is set during Partition. It follows a Muslim family who flee to Pakistan amid the violence of that era, only to find a Hindu woman already living in the home they were allotted in Lahore.

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film also stars Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh. It is slated for release on August 14.

When it became clear that the senior officials would arrive late, instructions were given to start the programme so that citizens would not have to wait any longer. Naqvi explained that the horse carriage had originally been arranged for the chief guest. However, due to the delay, it was used by the CDA chairman and Islamabad police chief to proceed with the programme. The minister also said both officers had initially been reluctant to begin the event in the absence of the chief guest and himself. He maintained that they proceeded only after receiving specific instructions. Despite the explanation, criticism continued online. Former federal minister Shireen Mazari shared the video and questioned the decision, while digital rights activist Usama Khilji criticised what he described as behaviour inappropriate for senior government officials. Several journalists and public figures also reacted strongly to the footage. Journalist Farzana Ali questioned the appropriateness of such a display at a time when ordinary citizens are facing economic difficulties. Journalist Zarrar Khuhro described the scene as embarrassing, while researcher Ammar Rashid criticised what he viewed as the growing distance between government officials and the public. Former Pemra chairman Absar Alam also condemned the incident, calling it an example of an outdated bureaucratic mindset.     Pakistan’s security forces continued Operation “11 Garaj” with multiple intelligence-based operations in different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The latest actions targeted militants belonging to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also referred to by the state as Fitna al-Khawarij. According to security sources, two militants were killed during an operation in the Shakro area of Bajaur district. The militants had allegedly established hideouts inside mosques and were using them as operational bases. Security forces launched the operation after receiving verified intelligence about their presence in the area. In another intelligence-based operation, security forces targeted militant hideouts in the Darbi Khel and Battan areas of Khyber district. Eight more TTP militants were killed during the operation. The actions were carried out after security agencies gathered confirmed intelligence regarding militant activities in the region. Officials said all the operations were based on credible intelligence and were aimed at dismantling terrorist networks operating in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The operations form part of the ongoing campaign under Operation “11 Garaj” to eliminate militant threats and prevent terrorist attacks. Security officials said the purpose of these operations is to clear the affected areas of terrorist elements, strengthen law and order, and ensure lasting peace for local communities. They added that intelligence-based operations will continue wherever the presence of militants is confirmed.

The body reportedly remained at the scene until approximately 1:45 p.m., before rescue personnel shifted it to Jinnah Hospital shortly before 2 p.m. The sources said that the Crime Scene Unit did not reach the location on the day the body was discovered. Instead, the unit reportedly received information about the body through social media at around 3:11 p.m. According to the initial investigation, the Crime Scene Unit had allegedly been instructed not to visit the location on the day of the incident. The team eventually arrived at the scene the following day. Investigators have raised questions over the delay, particularly because preserving a crime scene is crucial for collecting physical evidence and determining what may have happened. The delay in reaching the location could have affected the availability or condition of potential evidence. Sources further said that personnel responsible for tracking or searching for the device associated with the case were informed approximately 15 minutes after the discovery of the body. However, they reportedly did not reach the location at that time either. The Crime Scene Unit has since visited the site five times as part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body and attempting to establish a clear timeline of events. The investigation has also revealed another development concerning the police response before the body was discovered. According to investigative sources, police had received information about a robbery in Gulistan-e-Johar before receiving information regarding the body. Sources said that instead of being directed toward the location where the body was eventually found, police personnel were instructed to remain at the reported robbery site in Gulistan-e-Johar Block 7. The initial investigation suggests that the absence of local police personnel at the location where Mir Raza’s body was found may have contributed to the loss or disturbance of important evidence. Investigators are now examining whether the police response and the delay in the arrival of relevant units affected the collection of forensic material. The sequence of events has raised questions about the handling of the case during the crucial early hours. The period immediately following the discovery of a body is particularly important because physical evidence can be disturbed, removed or contaminated if the area is not properly secured. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s death.
