Systemic coronial delays finally end as remains of Bikram Lama are repatriated from Sydney

Eight months after his tragic death, the remains of thirty-two-year-old former international student Bikram Lama are finally being prepared for repatriation to his family in Makwanpur, Nepal. Bikram, who had been sleeping rough near Sydney’s Hyde Park, passed away unobserved in December, prompting widespread public outrage and intense scrutiny over the systemic failures that leave non-residents trapped in homelessness.

Following months of agonising waiting for his grieving seventy-one-year-old mother, Seti Maya Lama, the New South Wales coroner has released his body to a Sydney funeral service, allowing the family the opportunity to perform his final rites.

The prolonged delay in returning Bikram’s body was initially prolonged by mandatory DNA verification procedures, but persistent backlogs within the New South Wales coronial system extended the ordeal for months after testing was completed.

Legal experts and former judicial officials have highlighted the incident as evidence of flaws within the state’s coronial framework, citing a lack of dedicated police investigative units and poor inter-agency coordination.

With financial assistance provided by community organisations, international students, and the Nepalese government, Bikram’s family is preparing to receive his remains, while frontline advocates continue to push for a formal inquest to address the underlying homelessness crisis.

Lab report finds 176 substandard samples of oil, g…

ISLAMABAD: A laboratory assessment has found that 176 out of 491 samples of packaged edible oil, ghee and milk failed to meet national quality standards. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Planning, a total of 491 samples of packaged cooking oil, ghee and milk products were tested. Of these, 315 samples were found to comply with national standards, while 176 were declared substandard. The ministry said approximately 36% of the tested samples failed to meet the required quality standards. The assessment showed significant variations across different products. Of the 204 samples of vanaspati ghee tested, 98 were found to be below the required standards. Similarly, 40 out of 146 samples of blended cooking oil failed the quality assessment, while 26 of 104 samples of packaged liquid milk were declared substandard. The report also found quality concerns in milk powder, refined palm oil and refined canola oil. Eight of the 18 milk powder samples failed to meet national standards, while three of four refined palm oil samples were found to be substandard. In the case of refined canola oil, one out of 13 tested samples did not meet the required standards. The findings have highlighted concerns over the quality of commonly consumed food products and the need for stronger monitoring and enforcement to ensure that packaged edible oils, ghee and dairy products available in the market comply with national quality requirements.

Six Palestinians killed, 37 injured in fresh Gaza …

GAZA: At least six Palestinians have been killed and 37 others injured in fresh Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, adding to the mounting toll since the ceasefire in October 2025. The latest casualties were reported as attacks continued to affect different parts of the besieged territory. The deaths and injuries have once again raised concerns over the fragile situation in Gaza, where civilians continue to face the consequences of the prolonged conflict. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 4,000 wounded since the ceasefire began in October 2025. The ministry said that more than 800 bodies have also been recovered from various locations since the ceasefire. The figures highlight the scale of the devastation and the continuing challenges faced by emergency teams searching affected areas. The latest violence comes despite the ceasefire that was expected to reduce bloodshed and provide relief to Gaza’s population. The renewed casualties have added further uncertainty to an already fragile situation. Meanwhile, tensions have also continued in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian authorities said 66 Palestinians were arrested in different parts of the territory. The developments come as the humanitarian situation remains a major concern, with communities in Gaza continuing to deal with the aftermath of months of fighting, widespread destruction and loss of life. For families in the territory, every new round of violence brings fresh fear and uncertainty. The latest deaths have once again put the spotlight on the fragile ceasefire and the urgent need to prevent further escalation. As the death toll continues to rise, attention remains focused on whether diplomatic efforts can restore lasting calm and protect civilians caught in the conflict.

Rain forecast for several parts of Pakistan as flood risk rises

LAHORE: Rain is expected in several parts of Punjab, Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir on Sunday, with authorities warning of possible flooding in urban centres and watercourses following increased rainfall. According to the latest weather forecast, scattered showers are likely to affect different areas of the country, while parts of Punjab may experience intermittent rain during the day. The weather in Lahore turned pleasant on Sunday morning after rainfall was reported in various parts of the provincial capital. The early-morning showers brought temporary relief from the prevailing heat and humidity, with residents experiencing relatively cooler conditions. Rain was reported in several localities, adding to the likelihood of water accumulation on roads and low-lying areas if the spell continues. Meanwhile, the National Emergency Operation Center has warned that rainfall could lead to a rise in water levels and flows in major rivers across the country. The situation has prompted authorities to remain vigilant and closely monitor river channels, drains and vulnerable urban areas. Officials have also highlighted the possibility of low to moderate-level urban flooding in several Punjab cities, including Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Okara and Lahore. Heavy or persistent rainfall in these areas could result in water accumulating on roads, underpasses and other low-lying locations, potentially disrupting traffic and routine activities. Relevant departments have been advised to remain prepared to respond to any emergency arising from the weather system. The risk is not limited to Punjab. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, low to moderate flooding has also been forecast in rivers, streams and rain-fed waterways in Chitral, Upper Dir, Abbottabad, Shangla, Khyber, Orakzai, Kohat, Tank and North and South Waziristan. Authorities have urged local administrations and disaster-management agencies in vulnerable districts to maintain close coordination and monitor developments, particularly in areas located near rivers, streams and seasonal rain drains. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and stay informed about weather and flood alerts issued by the relevant authorities. The latest warnings come as the country continues to monitor the impact of the ongoing monsoon activity, which can cause sudden increases in river flows and urban flooding in areas receiving intense or prolonged rainfall.

Pipeline blast disrupts gas supply across Balochis…

QUETTA: Gas supplies to Quetta and several areas of Balochistan were suspended on Thursday after an explosion damaged a major gas pipeline in the Bolan region. Officials said the blast occurred near Gokurt. An 18-inch-diameter pipeline was damaged by an explosive device near its valve assembly. The damaged facility is located around 800 metres from the National Highway. The explosion disrupted gas supplies to Quetta, Kolpur, Mach, Mastung, Kalat, Pishin and Ziarat. Flames reportedly emerged from the damaged pipeline shortly after the blast. The area was secured to prevent further danger and allow authorities to inspect the site. The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) said repair teams would be sent to the location after security clearance is granted. Engineers and technical teams will assess the damage first. Restoration work will begin after the site is declared safe. The company has not yet announced when gas supplies will be fully restored. The suspension has caused concern among residents and businesses in the affected areas. Many households depend on the gas network for cooking and other daily needs. Businesses and commercial establishments may also face difficulties if the disruption continues for an extended period. Security authorities have started investigating the explosion. Officials are also examining the circumstances surrounding the damage to the pipeline. The incident highlights continuing security concerns surrounding energy infrastructure in Balochistan. Gas pipelines in the province have previously been targeted in similar attacks. A similar incident was reported in Balochistan earlier this year. In March, an 18-inch gas pipeline near the Western Bypass in Harnai’s Akhtarabad area was damaged in an explosion. Explosives had reportedly been planted beneath the pipeline. The blast destroyed a significant section of the infrastructure and disrupted gas supplies to several areas. The earlier incident affected parts of Quetta and upper Balochistan. Several localities, including Airport Road, Nawan Kali, Jinnah Town, Hazarganji, Kuchlak, Pishin and Ziarat, experienced disruptions. The March explosion also caused a major fire. Large flames were seen rising from the damaged pipeline, creating panic among people living nearby. Authorities are continuing their investigation into Thursday’s blast. Security officials will also determine the extent of the damage and assess the measures required to protect the pipeline network.

    Punjab’s Rs 40bn centralized medical tender trig…

LAHORE: A Rs40 billion centralized procurement of surgical and medical disposables by Punjab has landed under the scanner after Minute Mirror examined official procurement documents. Managed directly by the Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education (SHC&ME) Department, this multi-billion-rupee initiative represents the province’s first centralized framework contract, effectively replacing the long-standing decentralized system under which individual public teaching hospitals and medical institutions conducted their own independent competitive bidding processes. While the primary objective of centralizing such a massive health department exercise was to leverage bulk purchasing power, lower overall market rates and enhance institutional transparency, an analysis of the purchase indicates sharp price increases, significant market distortions, and severely restricted commercial competition. According to documents available with Minute Mirror, out of 125 evaluated medical device categories, a staggering 50 items, representing 40 percent of the entire tender portfolio, attracted only a single responsive bidder. Furthermore, 45 item categories yielded just two responsive bidders, while 22 categories managed to attract three bidders. Procurement specialists and governance experts point out that although provincial procurement rules do not strictly prohibit single-bidder contract awards, relying on sole suppliers for such a vast portion of a multi-billion-rupee contract severely undermines competitive price discovery, weakens public sector bargaining power and risks creating artificial vendor monopolies across public sector healthcare facilities. Rather than securing bulk-buying discounts for taxpayers, the comparative statement demonstrates widespread price inflation when measured against established benchmark prices from the Director General Health Services (DGHS). Out of 23 medical disposables with available DGHS reference rates, 18 items, nearly 80 percent, registered dramatic price escalations. According to documents, the rate increases are most glaring among routine, high-volume surgical supplies used daily across hospital emergency rooms and operating theaters. Surgical blades across sizes 11, 15, 22, and 23 witnessed a steep 470 percent surge, rising from the benchmark rate of Rs 13.67 to Rs 78 per piece. Black braided silk sutures saw price hikes of up to 275 percent, jumping from Rs 77 to Rs 289 per unit. Similarly, essential 24G IV cannulas climbed 154 percent from Rs 96.30 to Rs 245 each, while standard blood transfusion sets increased by 40 percent, escalating from Rs 105 to Rs 147.56 per unit. The financial evaluation has also drawn strong criticism from participating firms for appearing inconsistent with earlier proceedings conducted by the Grievance Redressal Committee (GRC). During those formal hearings, several bidding vendors submitted extensive technical objections regarding bidder qualification criteria, product specification compliance, and regulatory eligibility. Stakeholders argue that the comparative evaluation sheet reflects financial outcomes that directly diverge from the issues debated and documented before the grievance committee. Legal experts contend that any apparent divergence between grievance proceedings and financial outcomes must be clearly explained through detailed, reasoned written orders to maintain public trust, uphold administrative fairness, and withstand prospective judicial scrutiny. Given the immense scale of public spending and the critical reliance of public teaching hospitals on these vital medical supplies, transparency advocates and healthcare commentators urged the provincial authorities to ensure institutional accountability, preserve regulatory compliance, and safeguard the overall integrity of Punjab’s largest public healthcare procurement exercise.

Pete Davidson, Elsie Hewitt set differences aside to co-parent daughter

Pete Davidson and Elsie Hewitt have chosen to move past their differences. Their focus now is on their daughter, Scottie. The former couple has confirmed a formal co-parenting arrangement following their breakup. PEOPLE recently reported on the development. According to the outlet, the 32-year-old comedian and 30-year-old model have reached an understanding. This arrangement covers how they will raise their seven-month-old daughter together. The pair addressed the situation in a joint statement. “We are cooperatively co-parenting our daughter, whose well-being remains our top priority, and we are fully committed to working together to give her love from both of us,” they said. Scottie was born in December 2025. Davidson and Hewitt named her in honour of the Saturday Night Live alum’s late father, Scott Matthew Davidson. The couple’s relationship, however, did not last much longer. They separated just months later, in May 2026. Since the breakup, Hewitt has reportedly taken on much of the parenting responsibility herself. She has also continued working during this time. Speaking about a TikTok post where Hewitt opened up about staying focused on her priorities, an insider offered more context. The source explained that Hewitt has been managing daily parenting duties largely alone. At the same time, she has been trying to build stability for both herself and her daughter. The insider also touched on the couple’s past struggles. According to them, relationship challenges had been building for some time. This reportedly caused significant stress for Hewitt. The source added that she currently carries much of the emotional and mental weight of raising their daughter. Before their split, Davidson spoke fondly about becoming a father. In March 2026, he praised Hewitt’s parenting as well. “Dad life is awesome. It is exhausting and rewarding and cute. And I am very lucky because Elsie is a fantastic mom, and I can’t stress enough how lucky I am,” he said at the time. Despite reports of strain within the relationship, another source close to Davidson offered a different perspective. Speaking to the outlet in May 2026, the insider said Davidson had continued supporting both Hewitt and Scottie financially. The source added that Davidson wanted the best possible outcome for them both. Davidson and Hewitt reportedly began dating in March 2025, first spotted together during a trip to Palm Beach. They later confirmed their relationship on Instagram, announced Hewitt’s pregnancy in July, and welcomed daughter Scottie Rose Hewitt Davidson that December.
