Thai PM Anutin Charnvirakul Approves Border Fence Plan for Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT — Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has approved in principle a border fence project in the southern province of Narathiwat aimed at curbing smuggling, illegal crossings and insurgent movements, with funding to be drawn from the central budget, according to a report by the Bangkok Post.

Speaking on Saturday, Anutin said the plan covers the districts of Tak Bai and Waeng in the far South and is intended to enhance security along Thailand’s porous southern frontier with Malaysia. The project seeks to prevent illegal crossings, improve law enforcement efficiency, reduce unrest and build confidence among local communities who have long suffered from the effects of cross-border crime and insurgency-related violence.

Authorities said detailed design and route alignment will be finalized before construction begins. Funding for the first phase is expected to come from the 2026 central budget, with further phases to follow until the project is completed. The fence would be the latest in a series of physical barriers erected along Thailand’s borders, following similar structures on the Cambodian and Myanmar frontiers.

Anutin, who also serves as director of the Internal Security Operations Command, stressed that political and military efforts must work in tandem to achieve lasting peace in the restive southern border provinces. He emphasized the importance of intelligence-led operations and strict law enforcement based on behavioral evidence to bring offenders to justice, signalling a shift toward more targeted counterinsurgency tactics rather than broad-based security sweeps.

Meanwhile, Fourth Army Area commander Lieutenant General Narathip Phoynok visited the Buketa Customs House in Waeng district to monitor operations and provide policy guidance. He was briefed on cross-border movements of people and goods and on existing screening measures against illegal activity. The general instructed military, police and administrative officials to coordinate closely with customs officers to strengthen efforts against smuggling, drug trafficking and insurgent movements. Officials said joint patrols and information-sharing would be expanded in high-risk areas along the border. The commander also commended officers working under harsh conditions and urged them to prioritize public welfare while ensuring transparent and fair border trade to support the fragile local economy.

Government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said drug suppression ranks high on Anutin’s agenda, noting that despite increased arrests of traffickers in southern border provinces, the spread of narcotics—particularly methamphetamine—remains a serious concern, especially among youth and young women. She said plans are underway to establish district-level rehabilitation centres by next year, tailored to local conditions and supported by families, religious institutions, schools, local authorities and security agencies.

In a separate development, authorities have made progress in the investigation into an attempted assassination of Prachachart Party MP for Narathiwat, Kamolsak Leewamoh. Four suspects have been arrested, with efforts continuing to apprehend at least one more individual believed to be involved in the attack. The MP survived the attempt, but the incident underscored the persistent threat of political violence in the region even as the government pushes forward with its security and development agenda. For Anutin, the border fence represents a tangible symbol of his administration’s commitment to restoring order in the deep South—but whether it will prove effective against determined insurgents and smugglers remains to be seen.

According to the ministry, Pakistan’s debt increased by only 7.7 per cent during 2025-26, compared with an average annual growth rate of around 16 per cent over the past 20 years. The ministry said the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio also improved, falling to 68.3 per cent from 75 per cent in fiscal year 2022-23. Between 2019 and 2021, the ratio had remained between 86 and 88 per cent. Pakistan’s external debt-to-GDP ratio also declined to 21.5 per cent, which the ministry described as the lowest level in nine years. The country’s foreign exchange reserves have meanwhile increased substantially, rising from $2.9 billion to $18.4 billion, according to the ministry. The Finance Ministry said Pakistan also repaid Rs4.72 trillion in debt ahead of schedule. It added that annual interest expenditure on government debt declined by nearly Rs2 trillion. The burden of interest payments on government revenue also fell sharply, from 61 per cent to 35 per cent, indicating an improvement in the government’s fiscal position. The ministry further said Pakistan has recorded a primary budget surplus for three consecutive years, reflecting continued efforts to strengthen fiscal management and control expenditure. Pakistan has also returned to international capital markets after a four-year gap. The country’s Panda Bond reportedly attracted demand nearly five times higher than the amount offered, indicating strong investor interest. The ministry also highlighted Pakistan’s improved credit outlook. S&P Global Ratings has maintained Pakistan’s rating at B with a stable outlook, with the ministry describing the current rating as the agency’s highest level for Pakistan in nearly nine years.

According to media reports, the Spanish wildfire has destroyed more than 43 homes, while approximately 19,000 residents living in mountainous areas west of Madrid were ordered to evacuate. More than 2,000 emergency personnel, supported by 10 firefighting aircraft, have been deployed to contain the flames. Officials warned that soaring temperatures, dry vegetation and strong winds have created ideal conditions for wildfires, making firefighting operations increasingly difficult.     Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has dismissed claims that Pakistan’s governance system has collapsed, while firmly opposing the creation of new provinces in Sindh and warning that no violence or bloodshed will be allowed over the issue. Speaking to reporters after attending the Mining Technical Conference 2026 in Karachi, the chief minister said the Constitution provides a clear legal mechanism for altering provincial boundaries. He stressed that any such move can only take place if the concerned provincial assembly approves it with a two-thirds majority. Murad Ali Shah said the Sindh Assembly has repeatedly passed unanimous resolutions opposing the creation of any new province in the province. He maintained that there has been no change in the assembly’s position and that the issue should be addressed only through constitutional and democratic procedures. The chief minister said public debate on administrative reforms is acceptable, but warned against creating unnecessary tensions or presenting the issue in a way that could provoke conflict. He said no one would be allowed to exploit the matter to create unrest in Sindh. His remarks came after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently suggested that Pakistan’s existing governance system was no longer capable of addressing national challenges and called for administrative reforms, including the creation of new administrative units. Responding to questions about public demonstrations, Murad Ali Shah said peaceful protest is a constitutional right but should be held in accordance with the law. He urged organisers to obtain permission from the relevant authorities before staging protests. The chief minister also highlighted the provincial government’s agricultural policy, saying arrangements have been made to procure one million tonnes of wheat to protect local farmers and stabilise the market. Speaking about economic development, he said Sindh continues to expand its mining and energy sectors. He announced that electricity generation from Thar coal is expected to increase from 2,640 megawatts to 3,000 megawatts in the near future. Murad Ali Shah said Thar’s coal fields are producing more than 15 million tonnes of coal annually, helping Pakistan reduce its dependence on imported fuel and saving more than $1.5 billion in foreign exchange each year.
