Thai Prime Minister Anutin Begins Official Visit To France To Strengthen Bilateral Ties

PARIS, France — Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has commenced an official visit to France at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, marking a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, transport, and cultural exchange, according to government spokesperson Ratchada Dhnadirek.

Thai PM Anutin Says Koh Kood Remains Thai

The visit, which spans one week, coincides with the 170th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Thailand and France, providing a symbolic backdrop for discussions focused on elevating the relationship to a strategic partnership. Prime Minister Anutin is scheduled to meet with President Macron during a working dinner, where leaders are expected to address opportunities for enhanced economic collaboration and mutual investment.

A central component of the agenda involves energy security cooperation, with the Prime Minister planned to hold discussions with the director of the International Energy Agency. These talks are intended to explore avenues for sustainable energy development, technology transfer, and regional energy resilience, areas of growing importance for both nations amid global transitions toward cleaner energy systems.

Cultural diplomacy also features prominently in the visit’s objectives. Prime Minister Anutin is scheduled to meet with the director-general of UNESCO to follow up on previous discussions and to advance efforts to promote Thai culture on the global stage. The Thai government has indicated plans to pursue the registration of the “Thai costume” as an item of intangible cultural heritage later this year, a move designed to enhance international recognition of Thai traditional attire and generate added value for the country’s creative economy, including fashion, handicrafts, tourism, and soft power initiatives.

Beyond bilateral meetings, the Prime Minister’s itinerary includes engagements with senior representatives of international organizations based in France, reflecting Thailand’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and global governance issues. These discussions are expected to cover topics such as public health, education, and sustainable development, areas where Thailand and France have previously collaborated.

The visit underscores Thailand’s broader foreign policy orientation toward deepening partnerships with European nations while advancing economic diversification and cultural diplomacy. France, as a leading European economy and permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, represents a significant partner for Thailand in areas ranging from aerospace and transportation to education and innovation.

Trade and investment form a key pillar of the bilateral relationship. Thailand and France have maintained growing commercial ties in recent years, with French companies active in sectors including energy, infrastructure, luxury goods, and tourism in Thailand, while Thai exports to France encompass automotive parts, electronics, agricultural products, and processed foods. Both governments have expressed interest in expanding these exchanges through streamlined regulatory frameworks and enhanced business matchmaking initiatives.

Transport connectivity represents another area of potential cooperation, with discussions expected to address aviation links, logistics infrastructure, and sustainable mobility solutions. Given Thailand’s strategic position in Southeast Asia and France’s expertise in transportation technology, collaborative projects in this domain could yield mutual benefits for trade facilitation and regional connectivity.

As the visit progresses, official statements and joint announcements are anticipated regarding specific agreements or memoranda of understanding resulting from the discussions. The Thai government has emphasized that outcomes from the visit will be communicated through verified channels to ensure accuracy and transparency.

For observers of international relations, the Anutin-Macron engagement reflects broader trends in ASEAN-Europe diplomacy, as Southeast Asian nations seek to diversify partnerships and European countries pursue deeper engagement with dynamic Asian economies. The 170th anniversary of Thai-French diplomatic relations provides a meaningful occasion to reflect on historical ties while charting a course for future collaboration.

JI seeks Rs1 billion damages from former FBR chief

KARACHI: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has served a legal notice on former Federal Board of Revenue chairman Shabbar Zaidi. The party is seeking Rs1 billion in damages over remarks it says harmed its reputation. The notice relates to allegations made by Zaidi about the political party and its role in public protests. JI said the former FBR chief made the remarks during a podcast and later repeated them on different social media platforms. According to the party, the notice was issued on July 27 through Advocate Tahir Iqbal Malik. It was sent on the instructions of JI Karachi General Secretary Taufiquddin Siddiqui. JI has accused Zaidi of making serious and damaging claims. The party says the allegations suggested that it had received money to weaken or suppress public protests and political issues. The party also objected to comments in which Zaidi allegedly described JI as an “establishment firewall”. According to JI, the remarks created an impression that the party was working to dilute public concerns and protests. The legal notice claims that the statements included allegations of secret funding, bribery, corruption and political misconduct. It also alleges that the remarks suggested coordination between the party and state institutions. JI has demanded that Zaidi provide evidence to support his claims. The party has asked him to identify the person who allegedly made the payment and the individual who supposedly received it. The notice also seeks details about the alleged amount, including when and where the payment was made. JI has asked for information about the method of payment and any bank records or financial documents linked to the allegation. The party has further demanded evidence concerning the alleged protest or public issue. It has asked for the names of witnesses and any documents, recordings or other material that could support the claims. JI also wants Zaidi to disclose the source of the information on which his allegations were based. The party has said the claims should be backed by verifiable evidence. When approached for a response, Zaidi said he had forwarded the legal notice to his lawyer. He said he would seek legal advice on the matter. The dispute could now move into a legal phase if the former FBR chairman does not respond to the notice in the manner demanded by the party.

PTI seeks LHC order for August 5 Minar-e-Pakistan …

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has moved the Lahore High Court (LHC), seeking judicial intervention after the Lahore district administration allegedly failed to decide its application for permission to hold a public rally at Minar-e-Pakistan on August 5. The constitutional petition, filed by PTI Lahore President Mian Usman Akram through legal counsel, names the Deputy Commissioner Lahore and other relevant government authorities as respondents. The party argues that the delay has created uncertainty over one of its planned political gatherings at a time of increasing political activity across the country. According to the petition, PTI submitted its application to the Deputy Commissioner’s office on July 22, requesting official permission to organize a peaceful public rally at the historic Minar-e-Pakistan. However, despite the passage of several days, the district administration has neither approved nor rejected the request. The petitioner contends that the prolonged silence from the authorities amounts to an arbitrary exercise of power and effectively prevents the party from exercising its constitutional rights. It argues that every citizen and political party is entitled to hold peaceful public meetings and political gatherings, subject to reasonable restrictions imposed by law. PTI maintains that administrative authorities cannot deny constitutional freedoms simply by delaying decisions on lawful applications. The petition states that the failure to issue a timely decision has deprived the party of sufficient time to make arrangements for the proposed gathering and has created unnecessary legal uncertainty. The petition further argues that public assemblies are an essential component of a democratic society, allowing political parties to communicate with supporters and present their views peacefully. It says government officials are legally required to act fairly, transparently, and within a reasonable timeframe while deciding such applications. Seeking judicial relief, PTI has asked the Lahore High Court to direct the Deputy Commissioner Lahore to decide the pending application for the August 5 rally without further delay. The party has also requested the court to declare the prolonged inaction unconstitutional, unlawful, and without legal authority. In addition, the petition urges the court to ensure that the respondents perform their statutory duties in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws, enabling the party to exercise its democratic and political rights through a peaceful public gathering. The case is expected to come before the Lahore High Court in the coming days. The court’s decision could determine whether the district administration must promptly rule on PTI’s request ahead of the proposed August 5 rally. At the time of filing, no official response had been issued by the Lahore district administration regarding the allegations made in the petition.

Pakistan hockey team Beats South Korea 3-1 in hist…

Pakistan hockey team eased past South Korea 3-1 in the opening match of the four-test series at the Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium on Thursday, marking the first time in 20 years that an international hockey team has toured Pakistan for an official bilateral series. The 13th-ranked Green Shirts dominated the 22nd-ranked Korea throughout the match. Sufyan scored twice, while newly appointed captain Abu Bakar Mahmood added a goal to cap off an excellent performance. South Korea managed just one goal in reply. The series marks a significant milestone for Pakistan hockey, which has struggled to attract international teams to its shores over the past two decades due to security concerns and the sport’s declining profile in the country. Earlier, President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani welcomed the Korean team’s arrival and described the tour as a landmark moment for the revival of international hockey in Pakistan. “This is a proud and memorable occasion for Pakistan hockey. After almost two decades, we are once again welcoming an international team to our home grounds,” he said. “We extend a warm welcome to the Korean National Hockey Team and are confident that this series will strengthen the longstanding friendship between our two countries while promoting high-quality international hockey.” The second match of the series will be played on 2 August, followed by the third and fourth fixtures on 4 and 7 August, respectively. The series is seen as a crucial step in Pakistan’s efforts to revive the sport and attract more international competition in the future.
