The Population Debate: Curse or Opportunity?

Different countries have different characteristics regarding population, geography, and natural resources that shape their economic growth. Economists use various indicators to measure development, and population is one of the most debated among them. A large population is often viewed as a hurdle to economic growth. However, every issue deserves to be examined from different angles. The question, “Is a large population a curse or a blessing?” cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. We need to move beyond the idea of population as a burden and understand the concept of the demographic dividend. What appears to be a curse can become a blessing when viewed through the right perspective and supported by the right policies. Research by the RAND Corporation and the World Bank has shown that countries with a growing working-age population can experience faster economic growth when supported by sound education, health, and employment policies.

Whether a large population becomes an economic asset depends on governance and public policy. A growing population is not necessarily a curse because every additional mind brings new ideas, different perspectives, and fresh solutions to existing problems. One mind can accomplish one task, two minds can accomplish two, and millions of minds can achieve far more. That is the value of teamwork and collective human potential. Every individual possesses different skills, abilities, and talents that can contribute to national development. What many consider a burden may actually become a country’s greatest strength if those human resources are properly developed. This is the essence of the demographic dividend—the economic advantage that emerges when the working-age population becomes larger than the dependent population. Development economists describe this period as a “window of opportunity” rather than a guaranteed outcome.

Highly populated countries can utilize their youthful population to strengthen their economies. After India, China, the United States, and Indonesia, Pakistan is the fifth most populous country in the world. This should be seen as an opportunity rather than a challenge because more than 65 percent of Pakistan’s population consists of young people. That gives the country a significant advantage. A demographic dividend can only be realized when the working-age population is educated, healthy, skilled, and productively employed. When more people are working and contributing to the economy, household savings increase, investment grows, government spending on dependents declines, and both economic output and per capita income improve. The World Bank has repeatedly emphasized that human capital—education, health, and skills—is one of the strongest drivers of long-term productivity and national income.

The real challenge is identifying the policies required to achieve this dividend. A country can benefit only if it creates sufficient employment opportunities, provides quality education and skill development, ensures access to healthcare, encourages women to participate in the workforce, and maintains stable economic and public policies. When these conditions exist, the country enjoys faster economic growth, greater productivity, increased investment and savings, improved living standards, and stronger entrepreneurship and innovation. Economic growth becomes inevitable when people are hardworking, equipped with multiple skills from an early age, and capable of adapting to changing economic demands. Skilled and self-reliant citizens become the driving force of national development. Evidence from South Korea, Singapore, and Ireland shows that investment in education and skills transformed youthful populations into globally competitive economies.

However, a demographic dividend can quickly become a demographic burden if employment opportunities and skills do not keep pace with population growth. The consequences may include rising unemployment, poverty, social unrest, and migration. Economists and demographers consistently argue that a demographic dividend is not automatic; it is an opportunity that must be earned through effective governance and strong institutions. Without adequate planning and investment, a large youth population can become a liability instead of an asset. The International Labour Organization has warned that persistent youth unemployment can reduce economic productivity and increase social instability.

A dynamic economy capable of creating millions of formal-sector jobs each year is essential for absorbing a growing workforce. Human capital development should remain at the center of national policy. Strong educational systems, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), digital literacy, coding, digital finance, and technology-based curricula should be introduced from the early years of education. Equal opportunities for girls and women in education and employment are equally important. Pakistan also needs job creation, labour market reforms, export-led manufacturing, labour flexibility, investment in high-value industries such as technology, electronics, and specialized services, support for youth entrepreneurship and microfinance, and stronger healthcare infrastructure. UNESCO has consistently highlighted that technical and vocational education equips young people with practical skills that improve employability and economic resilience.

Pakistan possesses one of the largest youth populations in the region, but this advantage can only be realized through greater investment in education, skills, and employment. In conclusion, population control alone is not a long-term solution to economic growth. Developing people’s abilities, expanding opportunities, and investing in human capital are far more effective. The experiences of countries such as Italy and Japan also demonstrate that declining populations and ageing societies create their own economic challenges. The real question is not how many people a country has, but how well it prepares its people to contribute to national development. Research across both developed and developing countries consistently concludes that people become an economic asset when governments invest in their education, health, productivity, and opportunities rather than viewing population solely as a number.

    Japan launches cooling shirt with built-in fans

    Tokyo – Due to Japan’s intense summer heat, office wear is now being equipped with modern cooling technology. Japanese people have started wearing clothes with built-in air-conditioning systems. Japanese clothing manufacturer Yofuku no Aoyama has introduced a short-sleeved shirt fitted with two small fans that provide cool air to the wearer while they are on the move. According to media reports, the shirt looks like a simple and elegant office shirt but it actually contains an advanced cooling system. A fan is installed at the back of the shirt near the waist. When switched on, it circulates air inside the shirt and helps keep the body cool. Air-cooled clothing has become increasingly popular in Japan over the past few years. However, it has mainly been used by people working in construction, waste collection and event security. Such clothing is generally designed as jackets or vests and has traditionally been considered protective or workwear rather than office clothing. However, as summer temperatures continue to rise in Japan, demand for cooling clothing is increasing among ordinary citizens and office workers as well. Keeping this growing demand in mind, Yofuku no Aoyama developed the shirt in collaboration with FZN, a company specializing in fan-equipped clothing. The shirt comes with two fans and a rechargeable battery. According to the company, efforts have been made to keep the cooling system as lightweight as possible. According to the report, each of the two fans weighs 95 grams, while the rechargeable battery pack weighs 165 grams. Although the fans are visible when the shirt is viewed from the back, designers have tried to make them less noticeable from other angles so that the shirt remains suitable for an office environment. The company has not provided specific information about the noise level of the fans suggesting that they may not be completely silent. When is cooling shirt most useful? The shirt is considered more useful while travelling rather than during meetings. The company says its main purpose is not necessarily to operate the fans inside an office or during client meetings as such meetings are generally held in air-conditioned rooms. The real benefit of the shirt is for people who travel around the city from one meeting to another. While walking outside in extreme heat or using public transport, the fans can help keep the body cool. It may also reduce the need for employees to change sweat-soaked clothes and put on formal attire again after reaching their destination. What is price? The complete initial package of the Kuchou Wear Short-Sleeve Shirt is being sold for 17,490 Japanese yen. The package includes the shirt, two fans, a rechargeable battery pack and a charging cable. The shirt is available in blue and grey with medium, large and extra-large sizes offered. The product has already gone on sale at the company’s stores and online shop.

  • Black holes are real

    In 1915, Albert Einstein published his ground-breaking theory of general relativity, radically altering humanity’s understanding of gravity. Rather than treating gravity as an invisible pulling force between masses, Einstein demonstrated that heavy objects warp the very fabric of space and time. Soon after, physicists realized that Einstein’s field equations contained a dramatic prediction. If enough mass were compressed into a small enough region, space-time would curve so intensely that nothing, not even light, could escape. However, Einstein himself remained deeply skeptical of these mysterious cosmic objects, which would later be named black holes. He believed that such extreme entities were merely theoretical mathematical artifacts products of idealized, perfectly symmetrical equations that could never exist in the chaotic reality of the actual universe. Einstein argued that real collapsing stars, possessing natural asymmetries and rotational forces, would scatter or bounce rather than implode into a point of infinite density. The Breakthrough of 1965 Ten years after Einstein’s death in 1955, a British mathematician and physicist named Roger Penrose forever settled the debate. In a revolutionary 1965 paper, Penrose provided the first rigorous mathematical proof that black holes are not merely theoretical curiosities, but robust and inevitable consequences of general relativity. Penrose realized that traditional analytical methods were insufficient to tackle the messy reality of stellar collapse. Instead, he introduced novel geometrical and topological concepts to physics, most notably the concept of a trapped surface. A trapped surface is a two-dimensional closed boundary where all light rays, regardless of whether they are directed inward or outward, are forced to converge toward the center. Once a collapsing star forms a trapped surface, an event horizon is established, creating a point of no return. Penrose proved that as long as gravity remains attractive and energy remains positive, the collapse cannot be stopped by any physical force or asymmetrical shape. The collapsing matter is driven relentlessly toward a singularity: a central region where density and space-time curvature become infinite, and where classical physics breaks down entirely. Transforming Astrophysics and Modern Cosmology Penrose’s singularity theorem fundamentally altered how scientists viewed the cosmos. It proved that black hole formation is a robust phenomenon that regularly occurs across the universe whenever massive stars exhaust their nuclear fuel and collapse under their own gravitational weight. Furthermore, Penrose’s mathematical techniques opened completely new avenues of theoretical research: The Big Bang Origin: Inspired by Penrose’s methods, a young Stephen Hawking applied similar topological techniques in reverse to show that the entire universe must have originated from an initial space-time singularity at the moment of the Big Bang. Penrose Diagrams: Penrose introduced conformal visual diagrams that allowed physicists to map out the infinite causal structures of space-time on manageable two-dimensional surfaces. The Information Paradox: Defining the strict causal properties of black hole event horizons laid the groundwork for decades of theoretical inquiry into how quantum mechanics interacts with extreme gravity. From Theoretical Paper to Nobel Prize For decades, Penrose’s work remained largely theoretical because observational technology could not directly detect black holes. However, in the 21st century, astrophysics caught up with Penrose’s mathematics. Ground-breaking discoveries—such as the detection of gravitational waves from colliding black holes by LIGO in 2015 and the Event Horizon Telescope’s first direct image of a black hole’s shadow in 2019—provided unequivocal empirical evidence supporting his theory.   Recognizing the immense impact of his 1965 breakthrough, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Roger Penrose half of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics. More than half a century after its publication, Penrose’s paper stands as the single most critical contribution to general relativity since Einstein’s original masterpiece, proving that the most extreme objects in the universe are a tangible reality.

  • Women are not safe in our city

    I want to draw attention to the safety problems faced by women in our city. Many women and girls are afraid to go to schools, colleges and educational centers because they do notfeel safe on the roads. Harassment crime and unsafe public places make it difficult for them to continue their education freely. The government should take serious steps to improve security. More police officers, CCTV cameras street lights and safe transportation should be provided. Strict action should also be taken against people who harass or threaten women. I hope the authorities will take immediate action so that women and girls can go to school and educational centers without fear.

  • Humans may live up to 194 Years

    How long can a human live? No one knows the exact answer but scientists believe there is a natural limit to the human lifespan. According to a study a person could possibly live as long as 194 years although reaching that age would be extremely rare. Researchers say living forever is not possible. Even if science discovers new ways to slow aging the body cannot avoid the natural damage that builds up over time. The study published in the journal Nature looked at how our DNA and genes change throughout life. Scientists found that many genetic changes are harmless but some damage cells and reduce how well they work. Over time this damage increases the risk of age related diseases. The researchers explained that these genetic changes cannot be completely prevented.  They happen naturally when cells divide and can also be caused by viruses certain chemicals and ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight. To estimate the maximum human lifespan the team created a scientific model that included reversible signs of aging while keeping permanent genetic changes in place. The results suggested that even if future technology slows the aging process the longest a human could live would likely be between 146 and 194 years. Scientists also noted that some organs such as the skin and liver regularly replace old cells helping repair some damage. However the heart and brain do not replace most of their cells making genetic damage in these organs much harder to reverse. The researchers stressed that genetic changes are not always harmful but as they build up over time they may gradually shorten a person’s lifespan. They also believe that other biological processes may affect aging and more research is needed to better understand them. At present the longest confirmed human lifespan belongs to Jeanne Calment of France who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years making her the oldest verified person in recorded history.
